Outnumbered 8,500 to 22,000, Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Sterling Price are defeated at the Battle Of Westport by Union forces under Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis. This was the last major Confederate offensive west of the Mississippi as well as one of the biggest, with over 30,000 men on the battlefield.
