Back to the Basics – The Real Reason For The Season • Friday Service

As we celebrate Christmas, it’s easy to get caught up in traditions, festivities, and even the busyness of church programs. But when we look at the birth of Jesus—the moment the Son of God stepped into the world—it was marked by simplicity, humility, and sacrifice. It didn’t resemble the grandeur we often associate with Christmas today.

Let’s take a closer look at the true story of His birth, and let it challenge us to return to the basics of faith: humility, authenticity, and a real encounter with the living God.

1. The Humility of His Birth

Scripture: Luke 2:7

“And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

2. The Witnesses of His Birth

Scripture: Luke 2:8-10

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.’”

3. Prophecy Fulfilled in Unexpected Ways

Scripture: Micah 5:2

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”

4. The Purpose of His Coming

Scripture: Matthew 1:21

“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

5. The Response to His Birth

Scripture: Matthew 2:10-11

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

6. The Sacrifice of His Life Began at His Birth

Scripture: Philippians 2:5-8

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

7. The Glory of His Coming

Scripture: John 1:14

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

8. Returning to Authentic Faith

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

As we prepare to enter 2025, let us commit to being the true and authentic church. Let us strip away the distractions and focus on the heart of the gospel. Like the shepherds and wise men, let us bow in worship. Like Mary, let us treasure these things in our hearts (Luke 2:19).

This Christmas, may we encounter the living God. May we reflect His humility, walk in His truth, and share His love with a broken world.
