Mali: Junta Rechristens Streets with Colonial French Names in Capital Bamako | Firstpost Africa

Mali junta has joined its neighbours Burkina Faso and Niger in dumping its colonial past and renaming public spaces that carry colonial French names. Mali, ruled by a junta since 2020, has chosen to eliminate the names of members of France’s colonial administration in the capital Bamako as part of its decolonisation efforts to restore its cultural identity and reshape its historical narratives. Reports suggest nearly 25 names across boulevards, avenues, streets and public establishments have been replaced. Mali has turned its back on France and the West ever since the double military coup in 2020 and 2021. The West African country has grown closer to Russia, which is helping it fight insurgents in the country. Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad and Senegal have also turned their backs on France.
