Karate Kid fans know that 2025 will be a bittersweet year for them. Aside from saying goodbye to the long-running and hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, they will also get the chance to watch a brand-new Karate Kid movie, as Karate Kid: Legends hits theaters on May 30, 2025. The new feature film pairs up Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) for an exciting adventure. The first trailer for the film arrived this morning, and it provides new details about where the plot is headed.
Every Cobra Kai and Karate Kid fan will get chills when Mr. Han starts narrating and tells Daniel LaRusso that he didn't go to his dojo looking for the late Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), he is there looking for LaRusso. As one might expect, there will be a lot of jacket-removing and putting on as Mr. Han takes on the tutelage of Li (Ben Wang). And, from the looks of it, the boy is to Han what LaRusso was to Miyagi, and all of them will band together in order to create a new legacy.
The trailer also makes it clear that newcomer Wang is pretty much a martial arts master—something that the actor already demonstrated in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese. The boy will have an arc similar to the young LaRusso in the 80s franchise: suffer a dose of bullying, have a lot of bottled-up anger, and eventually learn how to channel his frustration into martial arts techniques. Even though we are all interested in checking up on Han and LaRusso, it looks like Karate Kid: Legends will give its new character plenty of room to shine and conquer audiences' hearts and minds.
'Karate Kid: Legends' Features Several Newcomers To The Franchise
Karate Kid: Legends is directed by Jonathan Entwistle, who previously wrote and directed episodes from series like The End of The F*** World and I Am Not Okay With This. The new installment of the Karate Kid franchise will be his first blockbuster. The screenplay is written by Rob Lieber, who also penned Peter Rabbit and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The cast also features Joshua Jackson (Dr. Death), Ming-Na Wen (Mulan), Sadie Stanley (Cruel Summer) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident).
For fans who are wondering, it doesn't look like there will be any overlap between the final episodes of Cobra Kai and Karate Kid: Legends. The trailer makes no mention of the events of the series, and no other characters from the show besides LaRusso make an appearance. So far, it looks like all moviegoers will need to know going into the new installment is that LaRusso opened his own dojo with Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).
Karate Kid: Legends premieres in theaters on May 30. You can check out the trailer above and the film's synopsis is as follows:
In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn't want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren't enough. Li's kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.

The film was confirmed to be in development in September 2022, with Entwistle set to direct and Lieber set to write the screenplay in November 2023. It serves as a sequel to the original films of the franchise starring Macchio and the 2010 film starring Chan. Casting took place from November 2023 to April 2024. Filming took place from April to June 2024.

The Karate Kid (1984), starring Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, was followed by three sequels: The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994), although Macchio did not return for the fourth film. A remake of the first film was released in 2010, with a similar storyline but with a different set of characters, including Jackie Chan as Mr. Han. Despite maintaining the original title, the remake focused on kung fu, as the film was set in China. A television series, Cobra Kai, premiered in 2018.
Development
A sequel to the 2010 remake was announced shortly after its release with Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson, and Chan set to reprise their roles. Breck Eisner was tapped to direct in April 2014.[4] By then, two drafts of the screenplay had been written by writing duo Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris as well as Zak Penn. Eisner left the project three months later and a new screenplay by Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer was commissioned.[5] In April 2017, Eisner returned to the project[6] but by October, Chan expressed dissatisfaction with the film's script.[7]
In September 2022, a new feature film was confirmed to be in development, being described as "the return of the original Karate Kid franchise".[8][9] In November 2023, it was reported that Jonathan Entwistle was set to direct the film, with a screenplay written by Rob Lieber and with Karen Rosenfelt serving as the producer.[10]
Casting
In August 2023, Chan was reported to be reprising his role in the film. In late November 2023, Chan and Macchio were officially revealed to have joined the cast. The announcement confirms that the original films, the remake, and the Cobra Kai series all take place in the same universe.[11] In addition, Chan and Macchio announced a world-wide open casting call for an actor to star as the film's iteration of the titular character, described as a Chinese teen who moves to the East Coast and begins studying martial arts.[11]
In February 2024, Ben Wang was cast as the titular character, Li Fong.[12] In March, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen were cast in undisclosed roles.[13][14][15] In April, Aramis Knight and Wyatt Oleff joined the cast.[16]
Filming
Principal photography began in Montreal on April 1, 2024, and wrapped filming on June 3.[17] The film was shot under the working title Victory Boulevard.[11][18]
Music
Dominic Lewis was hired to compose the score by December 2024.[19]
Release
Karate Kid: Legends is scheduled to release on May 30, 2025, in the United States and Canada.[20] The film was originally set to be released on June 7, 2024,[8][9] but due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, it was delayed to December 13, 2024.[21] It was moved once more to May 2025 to avoid conflict with the final season of Cobra Kai.[22]

Jackie Chan began his film career as an extra child actor in the 1962 film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar. Ten years later, he was a stuntman opposite Bruce Lee in 1972's Fist of Fury and 1973's Enter the Dragon. He then had starring roles in several kung fu films, such as 1973's Little Tiger of Canton and 1976's New Fist of Fury. His first major breakthrough was the 1978 kung fu action comedy film Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, which was shot while he was loaned to Seasonal Film Corporation under a two-picture deal.[1] He then enjoyed huge success with similar kung fu action comedy films such as 1978's Drunken Master and 1980's The Young Master. Jackie Chan began experimenting with elaborate stunt action sequences in The Young Master[2] and especially Dragon Lord (1982).[3]
1983's Project A saw the official formation of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team and established Chan's signature style of elaborate, dangerous stunts combined with martial arts and slapstick humor, a style he further developed in a more modern setting with 1984's Wheels on Meals and notably 1985's Police Story, which contained numerous large-scale action scenes[4] and is considered one of the best action films of all time.[5] Chan continued his style of slapstick martial arts mixed with elaborate stunts in numerous other films, such as: the Police Story sequels, the Armour of God series, Project A Part II (1987), Dragons Forever (1988), Twin Dragons (1992), City Hunter (1993), and Drunken Master II (1994), among others. Rumble in the Bronx (1995) made Jackie Chan a mainstream celebrity in North America, leading to a successful Hollywood career with the Rush Hour and Shanghai series. In 2000, Chan produced an animated series Jackie Chan Adventures, which ran until 2005.[6] In 2010, Jackie Chan appeared in his first dramatic role in an American film, The Karate Kid.[7] In 2017, the Chinese-Indian co-production Kung Fu Yoga became his highest-grossing film in China.[8] As of 2021, Jackie Chan has appeared in nearly 150 films.[9]
At the box office, ten of his films earned nearly US$200,000,000 (equivalent to $570,000,000 in 2023) worldwide between 1985 and 1989.[10] By the mid-1990s, he had become the most popular action movie star in Asia and Europe, with at least 20 films (out of 40 films) up until then, earning him a net income of $5 million per film.[11] In East Asia, his films collectively grossed HK$1.14 billion (US$146 million) in Hong Kong between 1973 and 2010,[12] ¥48.4 billion (US$607 million) in Japan between 1979 and 2012,[13] and over US$72 million in South Korea between 1991 and 2010,[14] while topping the Taiwan box office ten times between 1982 and 1994.[15] In Europe, his films collectively sold about 84 million tickets between 1973 and 2010.[16] As of 2021, his films have grossed over CN¥14 billion (US$2.17 billion) in China,[17] and US$1.84 billion[18] (more than US$2.44 billion adjusted for inflation) in the United States and Canada.[19] As of 2018, 48 of his films listed by The Numbers have grossed more than US$5 billion at the worldwide box office.[18]

The Karate Kid legacy lives on.
Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan join forces in the action-packed first trailer for Karate Kid: Legends, which comes more than 40 years after the original 1984 movie starring Macchio, now 63.
The cast of the film also includes Ben Wang, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley and Ming-Na Wen.
"After a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Wang, 24) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother," reads an official synopsis. "Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn't want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere."
"When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition — but his skills alone aren't enough," the synopsis adds. "Li's kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Chan, 70) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown."

All About the New Karate Kid Movie
Karate Kid was first announced in September 2022 and a year later, it was announced that Macchio and Chan would be reprising their franchise roles as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han, respectively.
In the original Karate Kid films, Daniel is a bullied high-school student whose life changes when he's taught self-defense skills and life lessons by wise karate sensei Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). He applies what he learns to protect himself and beat opponents who challenge him in competition.
Macchio returned as Daniel in the TV series Cobra Kai, where his rivalry with longtime opponent Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) is reignited 35 years later. In 2021, Macchio earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series as one of the show's executive producers.
Meanwhile, Chan starred opposite Jaden Smith in 2010's The Karate Kid, where he played Mr. Han, a kung fu master and mentor to Smith's character, Dre Parker.

The Cast of The Karate Kid: Where Are They Now?
Karate Kid: Legends is directed by Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his work on the Netflix series The End of the F***ing World. The screenplay was written by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt producing.
The film will arrive in theaters after the final installment of Netflix's Cobra Kai. And as Macchio told PEOPLE in July, he filmed the two projects back-to-back.
"I went straight from Cobra Kai — basically the wrap party, saying goodbye to everyone for the moment — to Montreal and jumped in and shot a couple of weeks straight," he said. "It's exciting."
Macchio was shy about sharing any specific details about the plot of the film, but added, "To me, this was just about carrying the honesty and truth of Daniel LaRusso and what Miyagi, his mentor, meant to him, and paying it forward."
Karate Kid: Legends is in theaters May 30, 2025.
