St Georges Church Crowhurst
Crowhurst Church has a dramatic location astride the side of a hill with its magnificent tower dominating the skyline. There has been a church on the site for at least a thousand years with the earliest documented reference to Crowhurst going back to 772AD. We are very proud of our history, which includes a connection with King Harold, the last Saxon king.
We continue to be an important part of village life today. Over recent years we have had packed commemorations for events ranging from the bi-centenary of Jane Austen to the centenary of the 1918 Armistice. We serve the wider village through a popular Friday coffee shop, which offers a highly appreciated meeting place and a wide variety of other social events. The wider world is supported by charitable giving. For example we recently funded sewing machines for a college in Papua New Guinea.
St George’s Church is open on a daily basis and visited by walkers enjoying the 1066 route as well as locals. Our visitors often comment on the sense of peace and calm they find.

We believe that the feeling of peace owes a lot to St George’s having been a house of prayer down many centuries. Prayer and worship is at the heart of what we are about as we seek to encounter Almighty God and to seek His will for our lives. In our central act of worship we obey the command of Our Lord Jesus Christ to take bread, bless it, share it and eat in remembrance of Him, so that He may be present to us today and that we might be spiritually fed in this life. This service is called Holy Communion and is at the heart of our worship. On Sundays we meet at 11am to celebrate Holy Communion. There is a mixture of formality and laughter! We have a robed choir and draw on the traditions of the past, but also know that we are part of an ongoing story.
On the first Sunday of the month, at eleven, we have a shorter service of hymns, songs, readings and prayers particularly geared at those with young children. Afterwards we meet for refreshments and there is normally some craft for children.
Our other services are listed on this site along with those of our sister parish Catsfield. We share our parish priest with this parish.
If you have never been to St George’s, or to any church, before, you would be very welcome. We would be blessed by your presence and hope that you would be blessed by discovering more about the love of God.
