Pope Francis reveals he was almost assassinated in Iraq

Pope Francis was the subject of a foiled assassination plot involving a suicide bomber during a trip to Iraq in March 2021, according to his new memoir.

“Almost everyone advised me against that trip,” the Pope wrote in his autobiography Spera (Hope). The trip was the first ever by a pope to Iraq.

He was visiting Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and former stronghold of the Islamic State jihadist group from 2014 to 2017.
