s many U.S. malls face anchor store closures and empty parking lots, some are being revitalized by converting into housing. Real estate developers are building residential spaces inside or adjacent to shopping malls as major department stores like Macy’s, JCPenney, and Sears downsize or close. By January 2022, at least 192 U.S. malls were planning to incorporate housing into their developments. Numerous apartment projects are already underway in states like California, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, and Texas. This trend not only addresses the housing shortage in the U.S., but also brings residents closer to the remaining retail and dining options in these centers.
