Christoph Waltz is getting too old for this in the first trailer for Old Guy. Waltz, Cooper Hoffman, and Lucy Liu star in the action comedy. The film will be released in select theaters and available digitally on February 21, 2025.
Oscar-winner Waltz plays Danny, an aging assassin whose effectiveness is starting to diminish thanks to arthritis. Worse, his usual employer, the Company, is putting him out to pasture. However, he manages to escape desk-job drudgery by getting assigned to mentor a rookie hitman -Wihlborg (Hoffman), a member of Generation Z who instantly clashes with Danny's old-school ways. However, the two soon develop a rapport, and get sent on an assignment to Northern Ireland; there, they soon find out that there's no retirement plan for old assassins, and that the Company plans to make sure Danny's retirement is an extremely permanent one. Together with Danny's would-be love interest, club manager Anata (Liu), they're going to show the Company that an old dog can still learn some new tricks. The film is helmed by action veteran Simon West.
What Other Movies Has Simon West Directed?
After directing a number of music videos, including the famous (or infamous) video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," West made his feature debut with the star-studded high-octane 1997 actioner Con Air, which pitted Nicolas Cage against a plane full of dangerous criminals. He followed that up with the John Travolta thriller The General's Daughter, then helmed another action film in the form of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie's first outing as the iconic video game heroine. After remaking the horror classic When a Stranger Calls in 2006, he returned to the action genre, remaking the Charles Bronson film The Mechanic with Jason Statham; Statham also starred in West's Expendables 2 and Wild Card. He also reunited with Cage to direct the heist thriller Stolen. Recently, West directed two films in China, Skyfire and The Legend Hunters. His next film is Bride Hard, an action comedy starring Rebel Wilson as a secret agent who has to save her friend's wedding from mercenaries.
Old Guy was written by Greg Johnson and produced by Jib Polhemus, Martin Brennan, director West, and R.U. Robot Studio’s Petr Jákl. Hal Sadoff and Norman Golightly produce on behalf of Dark Castle Entertainment. The film will be distributed by The Avenue.
Old Guy will be released in select theaters and available digitally on February 21, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the trailer for Old Guy below.

Simon West is no stranger to hitman driven features, as he helmed the underrated 2011 remake “The Mechanic” starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. One hopes “Old Guy” reaches similar heights.

Running at 93 minutes and Rated R, “Old Guy” hits theaters and digital February 21.
The highly anticipated action-comedy Old Guy, starring Academy Award-winning actor Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) and Lucy Liu (Kill Bill, Elementary), is set to hit screens with a thrilling blend of humor, high-octane action, and surprising twists. Directed by Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2), the film promises to deliver a fresh take on the mentor-protégé dynamic, infused with razor-sharp wit and explosive moments.
About the Film
Old Guy centers on an aging hitman (Waltz) who's been sidelined by his employer to make way for a younger generation. Tasked with training a young prodigy, played by rising star Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), the seasoned assassin finds himself questioning his loyalty when the pair discovers they've been marked for betrayal. With their backs against the wall, the unlikely duo takes on their double-crossing bosses in a relentless, no-holds-barred mission for survival.
Lucy Liu, known for her iconic roles in Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill: Vol. 1, adds her signature charisma to the cast, further elevating the film's star power. The ensemble also features Ryan McParland, Ann Akinjirin, Jason Done, and Tony Hirst, rounding out the roster for this 93-minute thrill ride.
The Talent Behind the Scenes
Simon West brings his expertise in crafting edge-of-your-seat action sequences to Old Guy. With a resume that includes fan-favorites like Con Air and The Expendables 2, West is well-versed in delivering pulse-pounding entertainment. Writer Greg Johnson ensures that the humor is as sharp as the fight choreography, striking a balance between comedy and the gritty underworld of hired assassins.
Meet the Stars
Christoph Waltz: Renowned for his unparalleled ability to blend charm and menace, Waltz has captivated audiences in some of the most memorable roles of the past two decades. With two Academy Awards under his belt for Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, Waltz's performance in Old Guy is expected to bring his signature gravitas and dark humor to the forefront.
Lucy Liu: A Hollywood icon with a diverse career spanning decades, Liu has consistently redefined what it means to be a leading woman in action films. From her role as the deadly O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 to her portrayal of Joan Watson in Elementary, Liu's versatility and charisma make her an indispensable part of Old Guy.
Cooper Hoffman: The son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cooper Hoffman made a stellar debut in Licorice Pizza, earning critical acclaim for his natural talent. His role in Old Guy marks his foray into the action-comedy genre, showcasing his range as an up-and-coming actor.

Mark Your Calendars (In Select Theaters and On Digital on February 21, 2025)
Distributed by The Avenue, Old Guy promises to deliver a wildly entertaining ride. Don't miss the chance to see Christoph Waltz and Lucy Liu shine in a film that redefines what it means to be "past your prime." Stay tuned for the release date, and check out the trailer to get a glimpse of what's in store. Old Guy is shaping up to be one of the must-watch films of the year.
Here's the thing about Christoph Waltz: he's a two-time Oscar winner (for "Django Unchained" and "Inglourious Basterds") and has the rare ability to effortlessly switch between deadly seriousness and dark absurdity. Waltz puts those skills to the test in his latest role as an over-the-hill hitman tasked with training a young Gen Z assassin who is naturally talented but manages to annoy everyone around him -- especially Waltz's character. Check out the official trailer for the dark hitman comedy "Old Guy."
Christoph Waltz shares the screen with Cooper Hoffman, who made his debut as the star of Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza" and was recently seen in Jason Reitman's SNL biopic "Saturday Night." Hoffman, the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, plays the young hitman-in-training. While he possesses all the technical skills to be a superb assassin, he lacks the refined style and discipline needed to truly excel. That's where Christoph Waltz's character steps in -- as the perfect mentor to pass down his wealth of knowledge. The real question is: is he training him to become an expert hitman or preparing him to be his permanent replacement?
"Old Guy" is directed by veteran action filmmaker Simon West ("Con Air," "The Expendables 2," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider") and costars Lucy Liu ("Kill Bill," "Red One"). The film is set to arrive in select theaters and on digital platforms on February 21, 2025. Watch the trailer above.
