They say opposites attract, but not in Prime Video’s You’re Cordially Invited romantic comedy, which lands on the streamer on January 30, 2025.
Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon star in this latest film for the streamer, in which the coveted wedding date of June 1 becomes a source of contention between Jim (Ferrell), father of a bride, and Margo Witherspoon), the sister of another bride.

Unfortunately for Ferrell’s eager beaver single father and Witherspoon’s type-A career woman, a resort on a remote Carolina coast island double books their family members’ wedding ceremonies. The R-rated film, directed by Nick Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors) also stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer, Fortune Feimster with Celia Weston. As seen in the trailer, Peyton Manning also makes a small cameo. Tatro plays the fiancé of Margo’s sister while Stony Blyden plays the fiancé of Jim’s daughter.
Chalk it all up to a wedding planner with social anxiety (Keyla Monterroso) and some more miscommunication, but Ferrell and Witherspoon’s characters take the competition for a perfect ceremony to the next level. Jim’s daughter Jenni (Viswanathan) and Margo’s sister Neve (Hagner) have no choice but to be swept up in their relatives’ animosity, with Jim hogging the sunset and Margo wrenching a microphone out of Ferrell’s hand so hard that she accidentally gives a girl a black eye.

Set to “Cake By the Ocean” from DNCE, both parties from the two separate ceremonies are forced to share the venue. Jack McBrayer plays a flustered resort concierge who delivers the terrible news to two bridezilla-esque adults who won’t be walking down the aisle in white but are still very invested in the nuptials.

Will Ferrell isn’t quite a “Wedding Crasher” this time around, but it’s still a nutty nuptials…
Ferrell co-leads Prime Video rom-com “You’re Cordially Invited” with Reese Witherspoon, hailing from “Bros” director Nicholas Stoller.
“You’re Cordially Invited” stars Witherspoon as a woman who seemingly plans her sister’s perfect destination wedding, only to realize that her and the father (Ferrell) of a different young bride-to-be both double-booked the venue. And because of it being a remote resort on an island off the Georgia coast, both weddings will have to take place simultaneously…but there’s more than a few hitches to getting hitched.

“You’re Cordially Invited” is written, directed, and produced by Stoller, who made his directorial debut with “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Lead stars Witherspoon and Ferrell both producing alongside Conor Welch, Lauren Neustadter, and Jessica Elbaum.
“You’re Cordially Invited” marks the latest Prime Video rom-com title following the success of adaptations “The Idea of You” and “Red, White, and Royal Blue,” which recently landed a sequel. Both films starred Nicholas Galitzine.
Mega-producer Witherspoon has also been “invited” to be a Prime Video staple: “You’re Cordially Invited” is just the latest Witherspoon project in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. Witherspoon’s “Legally Blonde” spinoff TV series is also set at the streamer, with “Gossip Girl”-reboot creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage writing and executive producing. Witherspoon and producing partner Neustadter are executive producing through Hello Sunshine, as well as Marc Platt. The series will be produced by Hello Sunshine, Fake Empire, and Amazon MGM Studios.
A “Legally Blonde” prequel series titled “Elle” is also in the works, with Witherspoon producing. “Elle” is created by Laura Kittrell, who will also serve as showrunner. The series is centered on Elle Woods in high school leading up to the events in the first movie.
A “Legally Blonde 3″ film written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor was announced at Amazon MGM Studios after years of development. It is unclear if the movie is still happening.
“You’re Cordially Invited” writer/director Stoller previously told IndieWire that the best rom-coms are “comedy vehicles” for its lead actors.
“I think there’s a million love stories in the world and there’s a million ways to lead your life, and to fall in love. Or there’s people who don’t need anyone, who never need to be in love,” Stoller said. “The best rom-coms are about a character’s search for happiness of some kind. […] To me, the goal is to try to have a character who’s dealing with something, some sort of problem in their life and then they figure it out by the end.”

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar last year, Witherspoon reflected on starring in and producing comedies like You’re Cordially Invited and her 2023 Ashton Kutcher rom-com Your Place or Mine. “I think the human capacity to handle as much heartbreak and tragedy that’s happened in the world is really diminished,” she said at the time.
“I think of opportunities to make movies and television shows that are joyful, optimistic, funny … I think about what I want to see on a Friday night, and while I can appreciate a true-crime show or a podcast, I really need some levity. I think the world is looking for a little brightness.”
Morgan, a comedian who like Witherspoon hails from Tennessee, told PEOPLE in September that everyone on her first feature film “answered my questions. They were so sweet and uplifting. I fell in love with everybody on that set, from the craftsmen that were cooking, to the little PAs.”
Witherspoon, “a living doll,” added Morgan, suggested her for the role of her older sister. “That little thing believes in me.”
You're Cordially Invited is on Prime Video Jan. 30.
You're Cordially Invited to a mess of a location wedding with a riotous comedy starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. Prime Video released a new trailer for their new movie today that teases the chaotic clash between two families that have double-booked the same resort venue for destination weddings and want nothing more than to make it their bride's special day. At the center of it all are the Emmy and Oscar winners, whose fighting has even spread beyond the film to the trailer's promotional material. They play a father and a sister who have taken charge of organizing the perfect ceremonies for their loved ones, only to find themselves at odds with each other as they try and fail to share the venue.
The new footage is a showcase of how quickly a simple misunderstanding can escalate into an all-out war. What starts as a cordial arrangement to ensure each bride can make the most of a bad situation turns bitter as the families constantly get in each other's way. Jim (Ferrell) is determined to see his little girl be wed on the idyllic dock of the island resort, even vowing to throw any bride that's not his daughter into the lake. Margot (Witherspoon), meanwhile, is more than willing to fight with him and get dirty if it means her sister gets her time to shine. Their feud only builds to greater, more ridiculous heights throughout that threatens to ruin the day they're both warring over, even causing the dock to sink.
Nicholas Stoller wrote and directed You're Cordially Invited, which Witherspoon is also producing through her Hello Sunshine banner alongside Ferrell. When it comes to comedy, he has a proven track record of success on both the big and small screen. Known for his debut feature Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the live-action The Muppets movies, he's most recently found success as the director and co-writer of Billy Eichner's Bros and the co-creator of Apple TV+'s Platonic and Disney+'s Goosebumps. Stoller also has experience working with Ferrell before, co-writing Zoolander 2.
'You're Cordially Invited' Brings Together a Comedic Cast
Ferrell and Witherspoon have only continued to build their resumes with killer roles in 2024, with the former taking on Despicable Me 4 and his emotional documentary Will and Harper while the latter gears up to return to the desk of The Morning Show for Season 4 next year. They lead a star-studded guest list for You're Cordially Invited, including Geraldine Viswanathan, who will soon join the MCU with Thunderbolts* next year.
Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Jack McBrayer, and Leanne Morgan are also set to take part in the chaotic wedding.
