ComingSoon is debuting the exclusive Trigger Happy trailer, previewing the upcoming comedy crime thriller about a husband trying to cash in on his wife’s life insurance.

What happens in the Trigger Happy trailer?
The trailer highlights the life of a married couple, George and Annie Decker. The pair each have vastly different dreams, with George dreaming of escaping to the Bahamas and Annie desperately wanting to get a lead role in an infomercial. In order to reach his dreams, George begins thinking of killing Annie, which she seemingly catches onto.

Trigger Happy is set to release on digital storefronts and cable video-on-demand services on January 14, 2025.

Check out the exclusive Trigger Happy trailer below (watch other trailers and clips):

Trigger Happy is directed by Tiffany Kim Stevens, and it is based on a script written by Daniel Moya. The film stars Christina Kirkman, Matt Lowe, Tyler Poelle, and Elsha Kim. Brandon Evans, David Harvey, Natasha Jai, Christina Kirman, Daniel Moya, A. Raisler, Kristen Siefert, Todd Slater, Randall T. Stevens, Tiffany Kim Stevens, and James Tseng serve as executive producers. Kyle Herman is a producer on the film.

“George Decker has a dream of escaping his life and jetting to the Bahamas, but getting there will mean finding a way to rid himself of his wife, his crushing debts, his demeaning nine-to-six job, and an American culture that he feels has been specifically designed to torture him,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Annie Decker, George’s wife, has a dream, too: booking the lead role in an infomercial for the “WOW! Sponge,” which is the most watched television program in America.”
Lionsgate will release the horror thriller Never Let Go on Blu-ray combo pack and DVD on Dec. 3.

The film, which is already available digitally, has earned more than $16.3 million at the box office.

Executive produced by and starring Academy Award winner Halle Berry and directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl), the psychological horror-thriller follows a mother (Berry) and her twin sons who find their only protection is their house and their deep-rooted family bond as an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep. Needing to stay connected at all times — even tethering themselves with ropes — they urge each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

Classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ Available Nov. 12 on DVD and Blu-ray From MVD
Classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ Available Nov. 12 on DVD and Blu-ray From MVD
Alastair Sim’s tour-de-force performance as the ultimate miser Ebenezer Scrooge has made this 1951 version of Charles Dickens’ story A Christmas Carol into one of the best-loved Christmas films of all time. The film is available Nov. 12 on DVD, Blu-ray combo pack and in a colorized version on DVD from MVD Entertainment Group and Kit Parker Films.

Some of Britain’s best filmmakers united behind Sim, who was joined by a cast of accomplished and acclaimed English actors, creating what many believe to be the best and most faithful production of Dickens’ immortal tale.

In the classic story, cranky and curmudgeonly Scrooge learns the error of his unkind ways and is taught the true meaning of the holidays when he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future.

The Blu-ray edition has been digitally restored from a new 1080p, 24fps high definition transfer master produced from the 35mm negative and fine grain.

Special features include an introduction by Leonard Maltin; “Dead to Begin With: The Darker Side of a Classic,” featuring British film historian and culturalist Sir Christopher Frayling; “Scrooge by Another Name: Distributing a Christmas Carol,” a featurette with U.S. distributor Richard Gordon; “The Human Blarney Stone: Life and Films of Brian Desmond Hurst” with Allan Esler Smith, the great-great nephew and biographer of Hurst; “Alastair Sim Verson: Too Good to be Shown only at Christmastime” by Fred Guida, author of “A Christmas Carol and Its Adaptations”; and “Silent Dickens,” a collection of early examples of Dickens on film in HD (Scrooge-1922 and Bleak House-1922).

A bonus DVD in the Blu-ray combo pack includes a full-length standard definition A Christmas Carol plus “Campbell Playhouse: A Christmas Carol,” the original 1939 radio dramatization, narrated by Orson Welles and starring Lionel Barrymore as well as “Bibliographic Essay” by Fred Guida.

Extras on the colorized version include “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”; “Christmas Classics for Kids” promo; “Christmas Family Classics” promo; “Classic Christmas Cartoons Collection” promo; and “La Pastorela: A Shepard’s Tale” promo.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Tops Fandango at Home Chart Halloween Week
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Tops Fandango at Home Chart Halloween Week
Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice topped the chart of the 10 most-popular films on Fandango’s transactional digital service Fandango at Home for the week ended Nov. 3 — the week of Halloween.

The title, newly available for reduced digital purchase (after a premium run) and for digital rental, rose from No. 3 on the chart the previous week. In Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 film Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton returns to his iconic role as the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and two-time Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, with new cast members Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti in his feature film debut, Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, and Willem Dafoe.

Rising two spots to No. 2 on the chart was Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine. The third “Deadpool” film, newly available for regular digital sale (after a premium run), finds Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) teaming up with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to stop the destruction of his universe.

Falling a spot to No. 3 on the chart was Universal/DreamWorks’ animated The Wild Robot, available for premium digital rental and purchase since Oct. 15. An adaptation of Peter Brown’s New York Times best-seller, it’s an adventure starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of Roz, a robot that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to the harsh surroundings. Gradually Roz starts building relationships with the animals on the island, including a fox voiced by Pedro Pascal, and becomes the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (voiced by Kit Connor).

Debuting at No. 4 on the chart was Warner’s Joker: Folie à Deux, available for premium digital rental and sale starting Oct. 29. The follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker is a musical that finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him. The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).

Falling from the top spot to No. 5 on the chart was Paramount’s Transformers One. Directed by Academy Award-winner Josh Cooley, Transformers One, which became available for premium digital rental and sale Oct. 22, is the first fully CG-animated film in the franchise and features a voice cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Hamm.

UHD Alliance Appoints Bill Baggelaar as New President
UHD Alliance Appoints Bill Baggelaar as New President
The UHD Alliance (UHDA) has announced the appointment of Bill Baggelaar as its new president.

Baggelaar spent more than 12 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, most recently as EVP and CTO, Technology Development, where he led a cross-discipline technology team covering everything from production and post to content protection, interactive, real-time technologies, generative AI and media formats.

Before joining Sony in June 2011, Baggelaar enjoyed a more-than 13-year run at Warner Bros. Entertainment, where he most recently served as VP of technology in the Motion Picture Imaging unit.

Among the key initiatives Baggelaar will champion for the UHDA is to further adoption of Filmmaker Mode by both display manufactures and OTT platforms alike. Developed by the UHDA in collaboration with leading filmmakers, Filmmaker Mode allows viewers to experience films and TV shows as the creators intended. By disabling unnecessary post-processing and ensuring accurate color representation, Filmmaker Mode delivers a more authentic cinematic experience in the comfort of consumers’ homes.

“With over 121,000 streaming platforms worldwide, delivering more than 1 million titles, the volume of content that is primarily viewed in the home, and often can only be viewed in the home, continues to grow at a breakneck pace,” Tom Genaro, CEO of content tracking firm BB Media, said in a statement. “As this continues, preserving creative intent in the home becomes an increasing important value proposition for consumers.”

Aside from driving continued adoption of Filmmaker Mode, another top priority for the UHDA is developing and releasing recommendations for TV manufacturers on how to integrate Filmmaker Mode with the ambient light sensors now found on top end displays. These sensors enable automatic adjustments of picture settings based on the ambient lighting conditions in the room. This capability ensures optimal viewing experiences by dynamically adapting picture levels to match the surrounding environment while incorporating Filmmaker Mode to preserve creative intent in accordance to recommendations developed by UHDA and the creative community.

“Bill has extensive background in technology, movies, and entertainment,” UHDA board chair Annie Chang said in a statement. “His knowledge and experience can bring the same gravitas and leadership that enabled the organization to coalesce display manufacturers, studios, OTT platforms and the creative community around Filmmaker Mode to the organization efforts to further enhance quality of the home viewing experience through the integration of Filmmaker Mode with ambient lighting compensation.”

“I am honored to assume the role of President at the UHD Alliance,” Bill Baggelaar said in a statement. “The UHDA has been instrumental in driving the adoption of UHD technologies, and I am excited to work with TV manufacturers, OTT platforms and the creative community to further enhance the home entertainment experience for consumers through the proliferation of Filmmaker Mode, ambient light adjustment other future consumer enhancements.”

The Good
Joseph: Director Tiffany Kim Stevens, who co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Moya, went for particular acting and directing styles and nailed her visions quite impressively. Placing the story in the modern day with a nod to the 1950s, she presents characters who don’t quite fall into camp, though they do require decidedly committed performance styles that stay just this side of crossing that line at times. Poelle and Kim lead a game sizable cast as George and Annie Decker, with Christina Kirkman and Matt Lowe providing strong support as the couple’s married friends Gemma and Mikey Brier.

Mike: With a sort of alt-America thing going on, Trigger Happy is a dark comedy that plays everything with a seriousness that belies its somewhat absurd surroundings which makes for an interesting experience. Director Tiffany Kim Stevens does a nice job keeping the somewhat action-free plot moving along without it languishing too much and screeching to a snail’s pace. Also due some credit are the actors who keep things interesting, doubling down on not letting the plot drag. It’s worth noting that the acting is pretty solid throughout as each person brings their character to life with mostly realistic quirks, concerns, and shortcomings.

The Bad
Joseph: Regular readers here at The Good, the Bad, and the Verdict know that I instantly have issues with a film when it offers no likable characters — protagonists or antagonists alike — and Trigger Happy is, for me, guilty of that. Here our main characters consist of four self-absorbed married people, some of whom hate their partner so much that they fantasize about killing them, if not going further than that. There’s no one to side with, even with one initially sympathetic character who is in initial denial about their situation. And of course humor is subjective; for me, the jokes didn’t always land, though Stevens, Moya, and the cast members enact everything fervently.
I’m not exactly going to spoil the ending of Trigger Happy, but if you want to absolutely go in fresh, please skip the rest of this paragraph. As a lifelong fan of French cinema and its often nihilistic endings to movies, I have been fine with non-Hollywood endings and usually even prefer them. The finale of Trigger Happy, though, delivers a swift kick to the most delicate body parts. Not since I watched Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild (1986) have I felt so jarred by the ending of a comedy film. I’ll leave it at that.

Mike: One of the measuring sticks that I use in rationing a movie is its “rewatchability” and, sadly, I have to give Trigger Happy a fairly low score in this department. It’s not that it’s a bad or poorly made movie, but I just don’t get a lot of enjoyment out of married couples that hate each other so much they daydream of killing them - couple this with the fact that a lot of the humor didn’t really land with me and this just isn’t something I’d find myself putting on for entertainment purposes.

The Verdict
Joseph: I can recommend Trigger Happy for its devoted quasi-nostalgic aesthetic and vibe, and for fine performances from its many cast members. It’s an interesting feature that adventurous cinephiles will find worth a watch.

Mike: There’s an interesting aesthetic going on with Trigger Happy that gives it a timeless feel - from quasi-retro home stylings to modern cars and cell phones which, in part, helps the film sort of exist in its own world of alternate-Americana.
The darkly comedic aspect tends to dissipate over the course of the film until reaching its rather bleak third act which could be a breaking point for some viewers who enjoyed the earlier marital humor.
Helping to save the film is the acting which deserves a mention as everyone does a great job at keeping things engaging, although the overall success of the film will ultimately fall upon the viewer’s liking (or disliking) of the finale.

Trigger Happy, from Brick Lane Entertainment, screens as part of Cinequest, which runs March 7–17, 2024 in San Jose, California. For more information, visit https://cinequest.org/.
