"Contact with the other side is strictly forbidden." Apple + Skydance have revealed the official trailer for an intriguing new sci-fi action thriller called The Gorge, a new film directed by Scott Derrickson (of Sinister, Doctor Strange, The Black Phone 1 + 2). This is ready to drop on Apple TV+ beginning in February, just in time for Valentine's Day, early next year - unfortunately it's only getting a streaming debut and no theatrical release (as far as we know). Two highly-trained sniper operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts within guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. Despite the corrupt and lethal world they operate in – they still find a soulmate in each other. Ah so that's why it's a Valentine's Day release. It co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy & Miles Teller, as well as William Houston, Samantha Coughlan, Alessandro Garcia, Greta Hansen, and featuring Sigourney Weaver. This looks like a George Miller movie - much bigger in scope & scale than expected, a love story intertwined with a story about defending us from the gates to Hell. Wow.
Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Scott Derrickson's film The Gorge, direct from YouTube:

When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late. The screenplay is written by Zach Dean. Produced by David Ellison for Skydance, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Scott Derrikson, C. Robert Cargill, Sherryl Clark, Adam Kolbrenner, Zach Dean, Gregory Goodman. Apple debuts Derrickson's The Gorge film streaming on Apple TV+ starting on February 14th, 2025 early next year. The Gorge gets new first-look images and plot details, teasing the Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy action-thriller. The Gorge hails from director Scott Derrickson, who is best known for helming films like Doctor Strange (2016) and The Black Phone (2021). The upcoming film, which marks a collaboration between Apple Original Films and Skydance, features a script from Zach Dean, who recently wrote The Tomorrow War (2021) for Prime Video. In addition to Teller and Taylor-Joy, Sigourney Weaver is also set to appear in the project.
IGN now releases the first images from The Gorge, as well as some story information. Teller and Taylor-Joy star as two snipers at watchtowers on opposite sides of a massive gorge, with the location between them remaining highly classified. Their mission is to protect the outside world from a dark force that lurks within. More details are included in the film's official plot synopsis:
“They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.”
The official poster for the film and some stills of Teller and Taylor-Joy were also released, teasing a dark and intense adventure story with a romantic story at its core. The poster features a lone watchtower with a monstrous hand reaching up from below, while the stills provide better looks at the film's main characters. One image sees Teller and Taylor-Joy's characters in an intimate moment, while another features her running in a forest. The final image sees Teller exploring some kind of abandoned building. Check out the images below:
In a statement to IGN, Derrickson also revealed more details about the movie, revealing that the film "blends multiple genres – romance, science fiction, action, spy thriller and even horror." He continues: “The idea was to first invest a lot of time into the backstories and evolving connection between the two characters played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, and then see them thrust into survival mode amidst the unrelenting and unpredictable dangers and mysteries of the gorge itself.”
What The Gorge's New Images Reveal About The Movie
How Much Horror Will There Be?
Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
While much about the film, particularly what's in the titular gorge, remains shrouded in mystery, the poster, images, and plot information provide a solid idea of how the movie might compare to Derrickson's past work. Though he may have directed a successful entry in the MCU, Derrickson has worked extensively in the horror genre, directing movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Sinister (2012), and Deliver Us From Evil (2014). The Gorge would appear to be a departure from these types of movies, with more of a focus on action.
Derrickson is set to return to the horror genre with sequel The Black Phone 2, which is due out in October 2025.
That being said, Derrickson's past work and the images do tease that there will be elements of horror in The Gorge. The scary aspects of the film won't be too extreme, however, as the poster reveals that the movie is rated PG-13 for "intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements." As snipers on opposite sides of the gorge, the images also teases that, though Teller and Taylor-Joy's characters will eventually unite, each will have their own solo adventures.
Our Take On The Gorge's New Images
Teller & Taylor-Joy Could Make A Great On-Screen Pairing
Miles Teller's Reed Richards in a black suit in 2015's Fantastic Four
Teller and Taylor-Joy are two of the most exciting young actors working in Hollywood today, and their pairing in The Gorge is particularly exciting. Derrickson's upcoming film will mark their first time collaborating on a movie together, and their chemistry will seemingly be what most of the story hinges on. Both actors have thankfully proven themselves in the action genre before, however, with titles like Furiosa (2024) for Taylor-Joy and Top Gun: Maverick (2022) for Teller, meaning there's reason to be optimistic.
With these first-look images having now been released, a full-length trailer for The Gorge probably isn't far off. What remains to be seen, however, is whether the trailer will reveal the dangerous creatures that lurk in the titular gorge or if the big reveal will be saved for audiences who go see the film.

The Gorge
The first trailer for The Gorge has been released as part of the film's presentation at CCXP. The upcoming action film is directed by Scott Derrickson for Apple TV+, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller as two snipers manning watchtowers on opposite sides of a gorge, guarding against the unknown evil within. Eventually, the movie sees the two forced to work together to stop a potentially world-ending threat. Alongside Taylor-Joy and Teller, the Gorge's cast includes Alien vet Sigourney Weaver, Wednesday's William Houston and Arcadian's Samantha Coughlan.
Now, with just a few months remaining until the movie's release, The Gorge's first trailer has been released by Apple TV+. The video starts out by introducing Taylor-Joy's Drasa and Teller's Levi, two elite snipers for their countries' governments, as they are assigned to two watchtowers on opposite sides of the titular chasm and given the objective to make sure that nothing escapes from it.
Having also been forbidden from having communication with one another, the two eventually begin finding ways to talk with one another from across the gorge, slowly forming a bond along the way. However, when the mysterious creatures that lie beneath the chasm's fog begin to attempt to surface, the duo find their potential love story quickly turning into a horror story. Check out the trailer below:
What The Gorge Trailer Reveals About The Movie
Derrickson's Big-Budget Return Looks Very Different
The first footage for The Gorge certainly goes a long way to giving some insight for what kind of movie it will be, looking to be a mix of survival action with horror. More specifically, though, even if the trailer indicates the titular chasm is the door to Hell, some of the imagery seen in the footage looks to be more Lovecraftian in nature, even sharing some similarities with the creature designs of Alex Garland's adaptation of Annihilation. This makes further sense when looking at some of the other behind-the-scenes talent of the film, namely cinematographer Dan Laustsen, who previously did the first Silent Hill movie.

10 Great Movies & TV Shows That Wouldn't Exist Without Lovecraft
The influence of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft has been incredibly far-reaching and many of today's movies and TV show would not exist without him.
This style of horror also marks an interesting change of pace for Derrickson, whose work in the genre has largely been directly supernatural, particularly his breakout hit Sinister and genre return with The Black Phone. Even compared to his prior venture into the world of big-budget filmmaking with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doctor Strange, he and cinematographer Ben Davis went for a more psychedelic visual palette in comparison to the similarly colorful, yet more straightforward, visuals shown thus far in The Gorge's trailer.
Ultimately, one of the biggest things to catch genre fans' interest from the trailer is the very brief glimpse of the creatures that reside in the titular area. With just a shot of a large claw, it does seem possible the Gorge marketing team will aim to keep the creatures under wraps until closer to the release. Considering the story is more meant to be about the budding romance between Taylor-Joy and Levi's characters, it also makes sense they wouldn't want the marketing to veer too heavily away from that element of the movie.
Our Take On The Gorge's Trailer
A Very Promising First Look At A Unique Romance Twist
Anya Taylor-Joy's Drasa posing cheekily while holding an assault rifle in The Gorge
Though the horror genre fan in me would like to have seen more from that side of the film, The Gorge's first trailer does offer a very promising tease of the unique romance at the heart of it. The distant communication the central characters have looks to present Taylor-Joy and Teller with an interesting challenge of how to convey their characters' chemistry and growing bond, while the tease of the terrors that lie below does leave me intrigued. Additionally, with Sigourney Weaver involved as someone with knowledge of the Gorge's secrets, it will be interesting to see if Derrickson has a bigger role for her.
