"Do you want to save the SAS or not?" BBC has launched an official trailer for the next episodes in the mini-series titled SAS: Rogue Heroes (or just Rogue Heroes) about the original creation of the Special Forces unit, the Special Air Service ("SAS") during World War II. The SAS was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. The highly entertaining action thriller series is based on Ben Macintyre's book, which charts the creation of the famed Special Forces unit. "More rebels than soldiers, Stirling's team is every bit as complicated, flawed, & reckless as it is brave and heroic." It stars Connor Swindells as Stirling. Season 2's ensemble cast includes Jack O'Connell, Sofia Boutella, Dominic West, Con O'Neill, Stuart Thompson, Paolo De Vita, Anna Manuelli, Edward Bennett, Matteo Franco, and Gwilym Lee as Stirling's brother Bill, who founded the 2SAS regiment. Season 1 took place mostly in the African deserts following this misfit team of soldiers. Season 2 continues onward as they head into Europe to work on liberating the continent from the evil Nazis.

Rogue Heroes is a account of how the world’s greatest Special Forces unit, the Special Air Service (SAS), was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of WWII. Based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book of the same name, the series centers on David Stirling - eccentric, aimless young officer who's hospitalized after a training exercise gone wrong. Convinced that traditional commando units don’t work, Stirling creates a radical plan that flies in the face of all normal rules of modern warfare. He fights for permission to recruit a team of the toughest, boldest, and brightest soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines. SAS Rogue Heroes, aka Rogue Heroes, is a series developed by BBC, created by Steven Knight (creator of "Peaky Blinders", "See"; and writer of films Pawn Sacrifice, Seventh Son, Allied, November Criminals, Spencer). Seaosn 2 episodes directed by Stephen Woolfenden. Adapted from the non-fiction book by Ben Macintyre. Executive produced by Nick Lambon, Martin Haines, Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, Karen Wilson, Ben Macintyre, and Steven Knight. BBC will debut Rogue Heroes - Season 2 streaming on iPlayer in the UK sometime soon - no US release date is set. Who's ready for more?

SAS Rogue Heroes (titled Rogue Heroes in the United States) is a 2022 British historical drama television series created by Steven Knight that premiered on BBC One on 30 October 2022. The first series depicts the origins of the British Army Special Air Service (SAS) during the Western Desert Campaign of World War II.[1][2] The storyline is a broadly accurate representation of real events, as described by Ben Macintyre in his 2016 book of the same name.[3][4]

In December 2022, it was renewed for a second series that is set to premiere on 1 January 2025[5] and will focus on the SAS operations in the European theatre of war.[6]

Premise
The series begins in a Cairo hospital in 1941, when, after a failed training exercise, British Army officer David Stirling has the idea of creating a special commando unit that could operate deep behind enemy lines.[1]

1 "Episode 1" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 30 October 2022 6.55
In spring 1941, British forces in North Africa are losing ground against the advancing German Afrika Korps. British officer David Stirling takes part in military exercise where the trucks run out of fuel. Paddy Mayne defeats three British military police in a hand to hand fight while Jock Lewes and his unit steal parachutes from an Australian Army unit. Coming together, the three men come up with the idea of forming an elite parachute regiment to raid German Army truck convoys traveling through Libya. Mayne and Stirling also meet Eve Mansour, a Free French military intelligence officer based in Cairo who seeks their help for the Free French forces. Mayne is initially reluctant to participate and seeks transfer to the Burma campaign. Putting their idea into action, Lewes and Stirling parachute out of a plane into the desert, but Stirling's parachute tears and he is seriously injured.
2 "Episode 2" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 6 November 2022 5.63
Stirling is rescued by British forces and recovers at hospital in Cairo. Meanwhile, Mansour meets with Brigadier Dudley Clarke, seeking his help in recruiting paratroopers for the Free French forces. Mayne is sent to military prison after assaulting a superior officer. Still determined to establish his parachute unit, Stirling recruits Mayne and lobbies Commander-in-Chief Claude Auchinleck and General Neil Ritchie. Clarke agrees to support Stirling's plan on the condition that it adopts the name of a "ghost" military unit known as the Special Air Service. With the help of Mayne and Lewes, Stirling recruits several misfits and killers into the unit. As part of their first training exercise, the unit is tasked with travelling back from their training camp to Cairo.
3 "Episode 3" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 13 November 2022 5.67
For their first operation, the SAS led by Stirling and Lewes take part in a nighttime parachute drop during Operation Crusader in November 1941. Due to adverse conditions and darkness, the operation is a failure with a third of the unit killed or captured. After being rescued by the Long Range Desert Group, the SAS set up a new desert base and "raid" a New Zealand Army camp for supplies, including a piano. The SAS then takes part in a successful night time raid against German and Italian airfields in Libya, inflicting significant casualties, and destroying aircraft and fuel tanks. The successful operation draws the attention of the British GHQ in Cairo and Mansour.
4 "Episode 4" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 20 November 2022 5.16
The SAS continue their operations against Axis forces along the Sirte route. During an operation, Lewes is fatally gunned down by a German Bf 109 fighter plane, leaving the unit without a training officer. Flashbacks depict Lewes' relationship with his fiancee Mirren Barford. Following Lewes' death, Stirling promotes several SAS personnel including Sergeant Mike Sadler. The SAS also adopts the motto "Who Dares Wins." Stirling pursues a romantic relationship with Mansour. Mansour and Clarke later arrange a meeting between Stirling and Free French Captain Georges Bergé, who proposes that the SAS incorporate a squadron of French paratroopers. Stirling tasks Mayne with training the French paratroopers in the ways of the SAS.
5 "Episode 5" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 27 November 2022 5.58
Paddy Mayne trains the Free French and French Foreign Legion soldiers in desert combat. The French unit also includes Jews, Germans, and African colonial soldiers. His unorthodox training methods, including dividing the troops along ethnic lines during a tower-building exercise, causes friction with the French soldiers particularly Lieutenant Augustin Jordan. The relationship deteriorates after Mayne assaults several of the French trainees in a drunken brawl. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Winston Churchill's son Randolph accompanies Stirling and some SAS operatives on an undercover mission to the Italian-occupied port of Benghazi. They plant explosives in the harbour and escape. An impressed Randolph promises to lobby his father for more equipment and funding to the SAS. Returning to base, Stirling convinces Mayne to make peace with Eoin's passing and repair relations with the French soldiers. As a conciliatory gesture, the two men serve the Free French soldiers a roasted gazelle.
6 "Episode 6" Tom Shankland Steven Knight 4 December 2022 5.33
In Cairo recovering from sand sores, Stirling meets with Winston Churchill and obtains his overwhelming support. Churchill widens the SAS area of operations to the entire southern Mediterranean, including Crete, in order to ensure that two convoys to reinforce Malta are successful now that Tobruk has fallen. Stirling plans attacks at multiple airbases on the Mediterranean coast, as well as Heraklion in Crete. The attacks are successful, although Mayne's group must scrub their attack when their target is warned by early detonations from the French paratroopers' attack on a nearby base, and one French attack is a complete failure when it is betrayed by one of the German Free French troopers. During that failed operation, one of the French Jewish soldiers detonates an explosive that kills or wounds numerous enemy personnel. Bergé is captured by German forces in Crete. Stirling returns to Cairo to celebrate the success, but is dismayed to learn that Mansour has apparently been lost in an air crash while returning from Alexandria. After the United States enters the war, Stirling is captured while investigating a possible route which will allow the British and American forces to link up. With Stirling's capture, Mayne is promoted to major and placed in charge of the SAS.

Production
In March 2021, it was announced that filming had begun on the six-part miniseries, with Connor Swindells, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Allen, Sofia Boutella and Dominic West in starring roles. The series was written by Steven Knight and directed by Tom Shankland.[7] In June, César Domboy joined the cast.[10] Location work was done in Morocco.[11]

Filming for the second season occurred in Croatia, Italy, England and Scotland over a six month period between May and September 2023. According to director Stephen Woolfenden, production for the six-episode second season consisted of 81 shoot days, about 370 scenes, and almost 2,000 slates over two units.[12][13]

Release
The series made its premiere on BBC One on 30 October 2022 in the UK.[2] It simultaneously made its US debut on Epix on 13 November 2022.[14] In New Zealand, it was released on TVNZ+.[15]

The first episode was watched 5,526,000 times on iPlayer alone during 2022, making it the fifth most viewed individual programme on the platform that year.[16]

In November 2024, the BBC released the first trailer for the second series. The second series is due to premiere on 1 January 2025 on BBC One in the United Kingdom[5] and on 12 January 2025 on MGM+ in the United States[17] while Banijay Rights will distribute the series internationally.[18]

Reception
Writing in The Guardian, Antony Beevor commented that the series was "unmissable viewing", and "achieved the right balance of irreverence and admiration all the way through with a brilliant contrast in characters".[3]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 100% with an average rating of 8.3/10, based on 12 critic reviews. The website's critical consensus said: "With a terrific cast inhabiting this roster of likeable rapscallions, Rogue Heroes is a fun throwback to down-and-dirty adventure stories."[19] Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 78 out of 100 based on seven critic reviews, indicating "Generally favourable reviews".[20]

SAS Rogue Heroes was the sixth most-watched UK drama series of 2022, and the fourth most popular of the year on the BBC.[21]

Historical accuracy

Members of the 'French Squadron SAS' (1ere Compagnie de Chasseurs Parachutistes) in Tunisia. Previously a company of Free French paratroopers, the French SAS squadron were the first of a range of units "acquired" by Major Stirling as the SAS expanded.
At the beginning of each episode, the viewer is informed that the series is "[b]ased on a true story", and that "the events depicted which seem most unbelievable… are mostly true".[22]

Unlike the main trio of Stirling, Mayne, and Lewes, the character of Eve Mansour is fictional. Sofia Boutella, notes that her character is influenced by real-life female spies such as Noor Inayat Khan and Virginia Hall.[23]

As military historian Antony Beevor noted, whilst events surrounding the creation of the SAS "certainly defy belief", it is true that "some liberties with the precise record" were taken – for example, in the scripting of a romantic association between David Stirling and Mansour, the French intelligence agent. However, his opinion was that these were "mainly additions, fleshing out characters and context", rather than being significant "distortions" of the facts.[3]

Billy Foley, writing in The Irish News, was somewhat more critical of the artistic license employed, particularly in the depiction of Paddy Mayne. Far from being "a brutish, rough man who was looked down on by the aristocracy of his native Newtownards and despised the toff officer class of the British army", Foley pointed out that the ostensibly working class Mayne was in fact born to a landed family, went to grammar school, played rugby for the British & Irish Lions, and studied at Queen's University Belfast before qualifying as a solicitor.[24] Historian Damien Lewis also said it was "nonsense" to portray Mayne as a "thug and drunken lout", when he "cared passionately for those men he commanded".[25]

Moreover, it was Stirling who asked General De Gaulle to have Frenchmen in the SAS because he needed men ready to do anything to deal with the Germans. So the 1re Compagnie de Chasseurs Parachutistes was sent, which became the French Squadron SAS.[26]

Gavin Mortimer wrote that the "main problem with Rogue Heroes is that it is true to David Stirling's version of how the SAS was born. But as I make clear in my recent biography of Stirling, The Phoney Major, based on two decades of research, he was a master at twisting the truth to suit his own ends", adding that Paddy Mayne "was not the borderline psychopath depicted in Rogue Heroes. I know because I've interviewed scores of men who served under Mayne in the SAS."[27]

Sofia Boutella (Arabic: صوفيا بوتلة; born 3 April 1982)[1] is an Algerian actress, dancer and model.[2][3][4][5][6] She is known for her roles in the films Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Star Trek Beyond (2016), The Mummy (2017), Climax (2018), Rebel Moon (2023) and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (2024).

Early life
Sofia Boutella was born in the Bab El Oued district of Algiers, Algeria,[7] to an architect mother and a jazz musician father, Safy Boutella.[8] Her brother, Seif, works as a visual effects artist in the entertainment industry.[9][10] Her surname means "the men of the mountains". She was raised in a fairly secular household that cultivated artistic expression and creativity. Boutella described her childhood as a happy one, stating that she was "blessed to be born into a family that allowed me to express myself, to be myself and let out all sorts of colours that were living in my imagination and in my heart."[11]

With her family's encouragement, Boutella started classical dance education when she was five years old. In 1992, at the age of 10, she left Algeria with her family in the midst of the Algerian Civil War and moved to France.[12] Shortly thereafter, she started rhythmic gymnastics, joining the French national team at age 18, and then later graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.[13][14][15][16]

Dancing career
Growing up in Paris, Boutella was exposed to many more forms of dance, particularly hip hop and street-dance, which intrigued her for offering more "freedom" compared to the more disciplined styles of ballet and gymnastics.[11] She joined a group called the Vagabond Crew, which won the Battle of the Year in 2006, and participated in a spin-off group called "Chiennes de Vie and Aphrodites".[citation needed] She has cited Fred Astaire, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Bob Fosse as artistic influences.[17]

Her breakthrough as a dancer came in 2007, when she was picked for the Jamie King choreography for Nike Women's "Keep Up" campaign, serving as a role model of femininity and hip-hop.[18][11] This was a major boost to her career and led to more work alongside stars like Madonna, in her Confessions Tour, and Rihanna.[15][18] She credits her work with Madonna for helping her learn English.[19]

Boutella successfully auditioned for the Michael Jackson This Is It tour, but could not attend due to the extension of the Madonna tour, whose dates coincided with the Jackson tour.[20] She was the main character in the music video for "Hollywood Tonight" by Michael Jackson in February 2011.[21][20]

Acting career

Sofia Boutella (2017)
Beginning at age 17, Boutella rehearsed with famed Spanish choreographer Blanca Li. She began dancing in film and television shows, as well as in commercials and concert tours.[15][18]

She played the lead character Eva in the drama film StreetDance 2 (2012),[22] the sequel to StreetDance 3D (2010).

In 2014, after 12 years as a dancer, Boutella sought a career in acting. Initially, she purposefully avoided auditioning for lead roles, wishing to play supporting characters so as to learn from more experienced actors.[3] In 2015, she appeared in her first major film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, which jump-started her career as an actress.[23] One year later, she appeared as the alien warrior Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond, released on 22 July 2016.[24]

In 2017, she portrayed a French secret agent in the David Leitch film Atomic Blonde, which also featured Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman and Toby Jones. The same year, she played the titular character in The Mummy, along with Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe and Annabelle Wallis.

Beginning in 2018, Boutella's profile rose, and she began to appear in more central roles. That year, she appeared in the Gaspar Noé dark psychological horror film Climax, starred alongside Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon in the HBO drama film Fahrenheit 451,[25] and portrayed French contract killer 'Nice' in the near-future action crime thriller Hotel Artemis, alongside Jodie Foster, Jeff Goldblum, and Dave Bautista.

In October 2019, she starred in episode 5 of the first season of Amazon Prime's Modern Love.

In November 2021, Boutella was cast as the lead in the sci-fi adventure film Rebel Moon directed by Zack Snyder for Netflix.[26]

Boutella played the female lead in SAS: Rogue Heroes, released in 2022.

Personal life
Although she has lived mostly in France since age 10, Boutella maintains strong ties to her Algerian roots and identity:

Algeria is a country that is dear to me, because it's where I'm from, where my family is from, it's my home. That will never leave me. I feel very worldly. But leaving a place like that when you're so young doesn't come without missing a sense of identity and belonging to one place. I think I've been blessed with the ability to travel, because I'm fearless to go anywhere, but I miss a sense of home, which was originally Algeria. But I feel Algerian, I'm proud to be Algerian and I carry that with me wherever I go.[11]

From March 2014 until October 2018, Boutella was in a relationship with Irish actor Robert Sheehan.[27][28]

Here’s the synopsis:

Rogue Heroes is a dramatized account of how the world’s greatest Special Forces unit, the SAS, was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of World War Two. Based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book of the same name, the series centers on David Stirling, an eccentric young officer, who is hospitalized after a training exercise gone wrong. Convinced that traditional commando units don’t work, Stirling creates a radical plan that flies in the face of all accepted rules of modern warfare. He fights for permission to recruit the toughest, boldest, and brightest soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines. More rebels than soldiers, Stirling’s team is every bit as complicated, flawed, and reckless as it is brave and heroic.

MGM+ has unveiled the official trailer, key art, and release date for the highly anticipated second season of Rogue Heroes, the hit World War II drama from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Starring Connor Swindells, Jack O’Connell, Dominic West, and Sofia Boutella, Season 2 premieres on January 12, 2025, at 9:00 PM ET/PT, exclusively on MGM+. The series has a rare 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is a dramatisation of the British Army's Special Air Service, better known as the SAS, during the darkest days of World War II.

Following the events of the first season, we pick up Season 2 with the SAS looking at a potential disbandment. As Paddy Mayne (O'Connell) suffers with problems in his own life, the team has to fight to prove their worth and prevent their hard work being all for nothing. Unexpected support arrives in the form of David Stirling’s (Swindells) brother, William (Gwilym Lee) but Paddy’s blatant disdain for authority might threaten the survival of the entire unit.

The second season will pick up in spring 1943, with the action shifting from Cairo to mainland Europe, as Paddy Mayne (Jack O'Connell) takes control of the SAS following David Stirling’s (Connor Swindells) capture.

“GHQ have cast doubt over the future of the regiment, while the creation of a second unit and an influx of new arrivals make things even more difficult for the men," the official season 2 synopsis reads.

It continues: "Can they prove that the SAS remains essential to the war, wherever it may lead them?"

The BBC previously released a bunch of dramatic first-look images, including one showing cast members O'Connell, Dominic West and Sofia Boutella sat around a dining table (below), and another showing Swindells in action as Stirling (above).

Alongside returning characters, new additions to the cast in season 2 include Con O'Neill (Happy Valley) as British Commander General Montgomery, and Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) and Jack Barton (Heartstopper) as new SAS recruits Jock McDiarmid and John Tonkin.

So, when will SAS Rogue Heroes season 2 air on BBC One and will the story of the SAS's actions in World War Two be completed in the new instalment? Read on for everything you need to know about SAS Rogue Heroes season 2.
