How Quarter Repeaters Work

In this video I do my best to show how a quarter repeater complication works. I do so using a continental quarter repeater pocket watch that I bought recently for 200 Swiss francs (about US $220). This introductory video is intended to be easy to understand even if you know very little or nothing about how mechanical watches work. If it's not clear please let me know the time at which you got lost in the comments. This will help me improve my communication skills before I attempt to explain other complications in future videos.

The main watch that I talk about and demonstrate in this video is a watch that I'm going to return to in future videos. It has a broken center staff and a broken pivot in the governor train, both of which I should be able to repair with my lathes. It also has an incredible backstory that I'm still researching. The name of Émile Guers, a pastor in Geneva that was born in 1794 and died in 1882 in Plainpalais, is engraved in it. I'm not sure if it was his personal watch or if he was the watchmaker that sold it. Either way, it passed though his hands, and that in itself is an amazing story because of who he was. (I'm still researching him to see if I can find concrete evidence that he was both a pastor and a watchmaker or watch dealer.)
