Recent research from Adobe shows that nearly two-thirds (64%) of Gen Z plan to establish a business within the next three years, reinforcing their image as a determined generation. The rise of the creator economy has led to 8 million new entrepreneurs entering the UK workforce since 2020[1], with Gen Z creators attracted to start-ups that allow them to control their own work schedules – over a quarter (27%) feel that their creativity would be 'restricted' by a conventional 9-to-5 job.
As the youngest demographic in today’s labor market, the findings provide clear evidence of Gen Z's entrepreneurial drive. To explore what motivates these young individuals to pursue unconventional career paths, Adobe conducted a survey with 2,000 adults regarding their views on entrepreneurship. Forty-five percent of those aged 18 to 24 report having their own 'innovative' ideas for independent work, showcasing the creative and growth potential among these young professionals.
Furthermore, research from Adobe indicates:
Workplace ‘non-negotiables’ are fueling Gen Z's desire for independence.
The traditional clock-in, clock-out culture is becoming outdated as young professionals are increasingly willing to reject the standard nine to five and pursue professions on their own terms.
- More than two-thirds (67%) of young adults describe working for someone else as their "worst nightmare. "
- Approximately a quarter (23%) express dislike for the concept of the conventional workday, and the same proportion (23%) acknowledge that they have yet to find an employer who meets all of their needs.
- 40% of Gen Z state that flexible working hours are 'non-negotiable,' and 30% demand a salary that aligns with their lifestyle.
Gen Z's self-confidence distinguishes it from earlier generations.
Equipped with digital skills and overflowing with creative assurance, Gen Z possesses the capability to thrive.
- 45% of Gen Z claim they have innovative business ideas, compared to only 24% of Millennials and a mere 13% of Gen X.
- On average, Gen Z also has a greater amount of disposable income to invest in a new venture than Millennials.
- 47% of Gen Z would choose a DIY approach for their business rather than hiring experts, in contrast to 23% of their millennial peers and 15% of Generation X.
