Psalm 91: Shadow of the Almighty Blues | The Psalm of Protection

** Psalm 91, often called the "Psalm of Protection," carries a powerful message of God's unwavering faithfulness, shelter, and deliverance. While the authorship of this psalm is not definitively stated, many scholars and believers attribute it to King David.

David's life was a journey of triumphs and trials-he faced wild animals as a shepherd, fled from King Saul's wrath, endured betrayals, and battled armies. Through it all, he sought refuge in God. This psalm, with its vivid imagery of God's protection under His wings and deliverance from every danger, reflects David's deep relationship with Yahweh.

The themes of trust, divine shelter, and the victory of faith that echo through Psalm 91 inspired me to create a blues song that brings its timeless truths into a fresh and soulful expression. Below, you'll find the original text from the World English Bible (WEB) and the lyrics to Shadow of the Almighty Blues.

** Psalm 91 (World English Bible)

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of Yahweh, "He is my refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust."

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler,
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
Under his wings you will take refuge.
His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand;
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes,
and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 Because you have made Yahweh your refuge,
and the Most High your dwelling place,
10 no evil shall happen to you,
neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.
11 For he will put his angels in charge of you,
to guard you in all your ways.
12 They will bear you up in their hands,
so that you won't dash your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and cobra.
You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

14 "Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him.
I will set him on high, because he has known my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him in trouble.
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 I will satisfy him with long life,
and show him my salvation."

** Lyrics: Shadow of the Almighty Blues

(Verse 1)
In the secret place of the Most High, I find my rest,
Under the shadow of the Almighty, I know I'm blessed.
I'll say of Yahweh, "He's my refuge, my fortress strong,
My God, in whom I trust-He's where I belong."

(Chorus)
A thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my hand,
But trouble won't come near me-I'm walking in His plan.
His feathers are my shelter, His faithfulness my shield,
I stand firm in His promise, no harm can break the seal.

(Verse 2)
No terror in the night, no arrows flying by day,
No pestilence or darkness can take my peace away.
He sends His angels to guard me, to lift me when I fall,
So I won't dash my foot on a stone-He's with me through it all.

(Bridge)
Lion and the cobra, I'll trample underfoot,
The serpent's got no power, his plans are kaput.
Because I've set my love on Him, He'll lift me up so high,
He'll answer when I call on Him, He'll hear my every cry.

(Chorus)
A thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my hand,
But trouble won't come near me-I'm walking in His plan.
His feathers are my shelter, His faithfulness my shield,
I stand firm in His promise, no harm can break the seal.

(Verse 3)
He'll satisfy me with long life, His salvation I will see,
No evil can touch me, His Word has set me free.
When the world feels like it's crumbling, and shadows start to creep,
I'll dwell in His presence, where my soul finds peace so deep.

(Outro)
In the shadow of the Almighty, I'll sing my blues away,
Yahweh's my refuge forever-He's my shelter every day.
