A Danse Macabre For Today

[Intro]
Get ready, it’s coming fast
2020 was just a dress rehearsal
Get in line tickets goin’ fast
For another mass extinction dispersal

[Lead In]
Coming attractions via demonstration and lynch mob
Dressed to the nines and made up for the upcoming danse macabre

[Verse 1]
Three hundred fifty years from now
If any are left will they wonder how
Any of us managed to another day
Given the filth and degradation at play

Pressing ourselves ever closer together
Should have become a simple bellwether
But rather we chose to press on ahead
With dance partners who would soon be dead

[Chorus 1]
So take my hand and stroll down fevered streets with me
Just remember a plague doctor can offer no guarantee
With departed loved ones we now perform our nightly dance
With all the fervor of a religious trance

[Verse 2]
It seems to happen after a few decades
Another problem ignored that quickly cascades
Into a sensation that captures our attention
Something new and of cosmic dimension

It makes its way into entertainment
Before we attempt biological containment
A viral plague is a bit more chilling
Premiering on Netflix with top billing

[Chorus 2]
So take my hand and skip down sickly streets with me
Just remember a plague doctor can offer no guarantee
With departed loved ones we now perform our nightly dance
Impeccably attired for another gothic romance

[Verse 3]
We actually used to think we could trust
The government but we’ve had to adjust
We’re better now at deciphering the clues
And no longer pay attention to the news

Authorities on their media outlets
Castigating one another using many epithets
Even an expert with a sketchy history
Could be counted on to fuel the hyperbole

[Chorus 3]
So take my hand and whirl down dying streets with me
Just remember a plague doctor can offer no guarantee
With departed loved ones we now perform our nightly dance
Nightly on a splintered floor of truly global expanse

[Verse 4]
We beat the last one into capitulation
With 7 million on permanent vacation
Under reported stats due to co-morbidity
Poor nutrition, bad heart or heredity

This one wasn’t a big enough fish
To examine ourselves inside the Petri dish
But we bury grandma, a spouse if we’re older
Paint on a languid smile turning much colder

[Chorus 4]
So take my hand and twirl down dead streets with me
Just remember a plague doctor can offer no guarantee
With departed loved ones we now perform our nightly dance
Who gladly take our hands when recognized at first glance

[Verse 5 Final]
Taking most precautions, I dodged the latest
Efficacy, longevity? I haven’t the faintest
But if I ever am a welcoming host
The next one will nail me from pillar to post

Much older now with trust thoroughly shattered
Not optimistic as if that really mattered
A question of time is what the experts say
So I attire myself for the danse macabre today

[Chorus To End]
So take my hand and fall into the grave with me
Remember what I said a plague doctor can offer no guarantee
And with departed loved ones we can now forever dance
But would we waltz differently if given half the chance?
