Destroyer and creator
Shiva is one of the three gods in the Hindu triumvirate, along with Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva's role is to destroy the universe in order to recreate it.
Many aspects
Shiva has many aspects, including the ascetic, the sensual, the herdsman of souls, and the avenger. He can be benevolent or fearsome, and is sometimes depicted as an omniscient Yogi or as a demon slayer.
Shiva is often depicted with the following attributes:
A crescent moon in his hair
The Ganges River flowing from his matted hair
A third eye on his forehead
A trishula or trident as his weapon
A garland of skulls and a serpent around his neck
A blue neck from holding poison in his throat
A coral red or fire-hued body smeared with white ash
Tiger skin on his loin and elephant skin on his chest
