Fresno Police say on Oct. 26, at around 5:20 p.m., officers responded to a two-round ShotSpotter activation in the 3700 Block of East Platt Avenue. As officers were investigating the call and searching the area for evidence, a police sergeant in his patrol vehicle was shot at by the occupant of a blue SUV.

That suspect was later identified as 40-year-old Andy Morales of Fresno. He was found a short time later and died following a shootout with police.

According to the Fresno Police Department, the incident captured on the bodycam video started when Morales approached the sergeant as he sat in his patrol car and fired 10 rounds at him from an AR-type pistol.

Officers say Morales struck the driver’s door and the engine compartment of the car. Bullets penetrated the door and the sergeant was shot twice in the left thigh and once in the right thigh. After being stuck by the gunfire, the sergeant pursued the vehicle and engaged in a short chase before Morales fled.

Investigators say a gun battle lasted over a minute between the injured sergeant and Morales, who was attempting to maneuver between the gunshots. Two additional officers responded to assist the sergeant and fired shots at Morales. Morales was struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say a man who identified as Morales’ father approached Morales before he was secured by officers. Officers say they quickly detained him and escorted him from the scene.

Police say that, following the shooting with Morales, officers went to the home where the original ShotSpotter call came from and found 43-year-old Mario Ternora of Fresno dead with stab wounds and gunshot wounds.

Police say both Morales and Ternora lived at the home. Morales was identified as the suspect in the homicide, as a large hunting knife was found in his bedroom, according to police.

The sergeant was released from the hospital a few days later after the shooting. Police say the sergeant is still recovering.
