Segata Sanshiro is a fictional character and marketing mascot created by Sega in the late 1990s to promote the Sega Saturn console in Japan. Portrayed by Japanese actor Hiroshi Fujioka, Segata Sanshiro is depicted as a stern, martial artist-like figure who dedicates himself to the cause of playing Sega Saturn games. The character’s name is a playful pun on the legendary judo master Sanshiro Sugata and can be interpreted as “You must play Sega Saturn.”

Segata Sanshiro appeared in a series of humorous and over-the-top commercials where he enforced his philosophy, often using exaggerated physical force to compel people to play the Sega Saturn. These ads, filled with comedic and action-packed scenarios, resonated with audiences, turning the character into a pop culture icon in Japan.

The campaign culminated in a dramatic storyline where Segata sacrifices himself to save Sega headquarters, symbolically marking the end of the Sega Saturn’s lifespan as the company transitioned to the Dreamcast. His popularity also led to appearances in other media, including a video game titled Segata Sanshiro Shinken Yuugi for the Sega Saturn and cameos in later Sega-related properties.

Segata Sanshiro remains a nostalgic figure and a testament to Sega’s unique marketing during the 1990s.
