Jacob Odekirk is a U.S. military combat veteran and avid outdoors-man from St. Maries. He has a masters degree in environmental science and works in industrial environmental compliance. He came in today to chat with me about his first job working at a high-end taxidermy shop, joining the Marine Corps. after high school, transferring credits from his military training and attending college through the G.I. bill after his service. Working as a wild life technician for the U.S. Forest Service after college and eventually landing in his career now. We also talked about growing up hunting, hiking and all things outdoors with his brothers, how technology has changed the way kids interact and the added value of tech such as GPS and land use maps. Learning how to drive a stick shift in the mountains. Ethical hunting and making full use of a carcass. The valuable lessons and values learned in the military about teamwork and leadership. The impact of the mining and smelting industry on our local lakes and wild life. The on-going environmental remediation efforts throughout the Silver Valley and world pollution from our long-term use of "miracle chemicals". The potential impact of GMO crops and the American diet.
