You won’t have to wait 100 more years for Netflix‘s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez‘s classic novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” — the two-part series premieres on December 11. Each part is eight episodes.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” (the book) was published in 1967; Márquez won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. The novel has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude (the series) was entirely filmed in Colombia with the support of the Márquez family. Like the book, it follows cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán who are married against their parents’ wishes.

“Accompanied by friends and adventurers, their journey culminates with the founding of a utopian town on the banks of a river of prehistoric stones that they baptize Macondo,” the Netflix synopsis reads. “Several generations of the Buendía lineage will mark the future of this mythical town, tormented by madness, impossible loves, a bloody and absurd war, and the fear of a terrible curse that condemns them, without hope, to one hundred years of solitude.”

Maybe don’t marry your cousin.

As José Arcadio, Úrsula, and several of their friends trek through the wilderness, Úrsula goes into labor and delivers a baby boy named José Arcadio. They eventually establish the small village of Macondo, where they are visited by Melquíades and his band of Gypsies. With Melquíades's inventions, José Arcadio becomes withdrawn, immersing himself into science and exploration, while Úrsula gives birth to a second son, Aureliano.

Years later, Melquíades introduces the Buendías to the daguerreotype, and José Arcadio becomes obsessed with using it to capture God. Development
Netflix acquired the rights to One Hundred Years of Solitude in March 2019.[2] Prior to author Gabriel García Márquez's death in 2014, he had refused to sell the rights to the novel as he did not believe the time constraints of a film were sufficient for a proper adaptation.[3][4] The series was filmed with the support of García Márquez's family, who requested that it be shot in Colombia, with Colombian actors, and in Spanish.[5] The producers scouted several locations in Colombia, including Cali, Villavicencio, Girardot, Palomino, Santa Marta, and Barranquilla.[6]

As a filmmaker, as a Colombian, it has been an honor and an enormous challenge to work on a project of the complexity and responsibility of One Hundred Years of Solitude, always trying to understand the difference between literary and audiovisual language, to be able to construct images that contain something of the beauty, poetry and depth of a work that has impacted the entire world. We have done it with love and respect for the novel, with the help of an exceptional technical and human team.

Casting
The cast was chosen through an open casting call in mid-2022.[8] The casting team saw over 10,000 candidates for the 25 main roles.[9] Only 30% of the cast comprises professional actors.[10] In addition to the main cast, 20,000 extras were also selected for filming.[11] The cast was partially leaked on 26 April 2023.[12]

Filming
Principal photography took place from May to December 2023.[13] The series was filmed entirely in Colombia,[14][15] specifically in La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar, Cundinamarca, and Tolima.[16] The fictional town of Macondo was built near Alvarado, and required the labor of 1,100 workers.[6] Four versions of the town were built to show the passage of time as the series progresses.[13] The producers purchased furniture from local antique stores and had fabrics and artifacts made by local artisans for the sets.[9] Filming required a crew of nearly 600 people, all from Colombia.[17]

Release

A teaser trailer for the first season was released on 17 April 2024.[18][19] Promotional stills were released on 18 October 2024.[9]

The first two episodes premiered at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid on 22 November 2024.[20] The series' first episode was screened at the Biblioteca Vasconcelos in Mexico City on 28 November 2024.[21] Its first two episodes were screened at the Havana Film Festival on 6 December 2024.[22]

The first season, comprising eight episodes, was released in its entirety on Netflix on 11 December 2024.[23] A second season, also comprising eight episodes, is also planned.[24]

Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of 15 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.6/10.[25] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 79 out of 100, based on 10 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[26]

Keith Watson of The Telegraph rated the series five stars out of five, writing, "What you get with this faithful but not overly reverent take on Márquez is a human tale stitched on fabric that covers eternal themes." He commended the cast's performances as "exemplary", specifically those of Marleyda Soto [es] and Claudio Cataño.[27] Helen Coffey of The Independent called the series "pretty much perfect", writing, "It feels nothing short of miraculous. As does the fact that the creators have achieved the seemingly impossible: remaining faithful to the source material while artfully translating it into a piece of visually gorgeous storytelling." She commended the casting, script, cinematography, and music.[28] Julio Ricardo Varela of MSNBC wrote that the series provides "countless moments of brilliance that prove creating art from other works of art is still possible." He commended the performances of the entire cast, specifically Soto, Cataño, and Marco Antonio González, and noted the care that seemed to have gone into the series' production.[29]

Judy Berman of Time wrote, "Considering the difficulty of the assignment, it's remarkable how close Netflix's splendid One Hundred Years of Solitude . . . comes to recreating not just the substance, but also the kinetic spirit of the book." She noted that the series successfully conveyed the story of the novel without oversimplifying its major themes. She commended the production value, direction, and cinematography, noting, "Each hourlong episode contains dozens, maybe hundreds, of astonishing images." She concluded that, "If Solitude has one flaw, it's that it can seem almost too faithful to the book. To their great credit, the writers neither sanitize nor pruriently exploit ugly but symbolically meaningful aspects of the story, from self-harm to incest."[30]

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called the series a "gorgeous, ambitious adaptation" of the novel that is "honorable and beautiful, if not without flaws." He noted that much of the series' content was taken verbatim from the novel, which "doesn't always work" when acted onscreen and that "everything plays better when the show is at its most figurative and least literal." He commended García López and Mora's direction, calling the series "breathlessly beautiful at times, lyrical and alive and brimming with visual and intellectual ideas." He ultimately concluded that "One Hundred Years of Solitude may not be as good as Underground Railroad or even Station Eleven, but it's a worthy and admirable capper for a year of often exceptional prestige adaptations."[31]

Aramide Tinubu of Variety called the series "exquisitely detailed and layered in intricate symbolism" and "one of the most faithful page-to-screen adaptations in recent years." She commended the cast's performances as "exceptional", but noted that certain sequences felt dense. Although she felt that the series' pacing felt "too lackadaisical at times", she noted that "the beauty of One Hundred Years of Solitude allows the viewer to absorb every intricately curated frame and moment."[32] Carly Lane of Collider called the series "a masterpiece in its own right" and wrote, "Not only does the Spanish-language series breathe new life into Márquez's supposedly unfilmable novel, but it also succeeds as a triumph of filmmaking thanks to stunning cinematography and an epic story that spans across multiple generations of the ill-fated Buendía family." She commended the visuals of Paulo Pérez and María Sarasvati, the production design of Eugenio Caballero and Bárbara Enríquez [pt], and the ensemble's performance.[33]

Jack Seale of The Guardian rated the series three stars out of five, writing that it "might struggle with the novel's problematic sexual politics, but it's a big, gorgeous adaptation.[34] Ed Potton of The Times rated the series two stars out of five, calling it "gorgeous but lethargic" and writing that it "lacks the vibrancy and energy of the novel". He commended the production design of Caballero and Enríquez, but noted that the series struggled to translate magic realism to the screen.[35]

Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez‘s 1967 magnum opus, “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” has long been considered one of the greatest works of modern literature. However, during Márquez’s life, he refused to sell the rights to the novel because he felt a film adaptation would not come close to scratching the surface of this century-long tale. Now, with the blessing of his sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, who serve as executive producers, Netflix has adapted the sweeping masterwork into a two-part limited series spanning over 16 hours of television. (Netflix hasn’t yet announced when Part 2 will premiere.) With directors Alex García López and Laura Mora at the helm for Part 1, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is exquisitely detailed and layered in intricate symbolism. The show is one of the most faithful page-to-screen adaptations in recent years.

A tale of family, fate, power and the frailties of humanity, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” begins in the mid-19th century with forbidden love. Amid a euphoric gathering, the audience is introduced to young lovers, José Arcadio Buendía (Marco Antonio González) and Úrsula Iguarán (Susana Morales). Unfortunately, their relatives aren’t basking in the glow of the newlyweds. Because José and Úrsula are first cousins, the family’s fears about inbreeding encroach on the celebration. Úrsula’s mother terrorizes her daughter with sinister predictions that she will birth monstrous babies with pig tails. Enraged by the constant disapproval, José kills a local man for mocking his marriage. Once acquitted of the murder, he and Úrsula pack up and set out to find a place to live away from the stares and jeers. Yet, before the couple begins their quest, Úrsula’s mother reminds her, “No matter where you run, you will never be able to escape true destiny.”

Throughout the first episode, “Macondo,” the pair and the friends who follow them wander across Columbia for years before settling down and building a small village in the middle of a swamp. José promptly names the town Macondo. In this place, no one decides for others. Fairminded and focused, José ensures each quaint house gets equal sunlight and water. Over time, Úrsula gives birth to three healthy children, José Arcadio (Thiago Padilla), Aureliano (Jerónimo Echeverría), and Amaranta (Luna Ruíz), all possessing perfectly human bottoms. Still, as the Buendías quickly learn, there is no true utopia where humans have free will, personal ambitions and lust.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” Part 1 comprises eight episodes wrapped in haunting images. Cinematographers Paulo Pérez and María Sarasvati unveil an expanding family and Macondo in sequences that echo the Buendías’ past, present and future. Under productions designer Bárbara Enríquez’s vision, the series showcases elements like the lush but treacherous Columbian mountainside to segments of magical realism, including a young girl bleeding in a bathtub in the river and the ghost of a dead man haunting the living. Unlike most book-to-screen adaptations, aspects of this narrative aren’t rushed or skimmed over. As much time as the audience spends on the main characters’ dialogue, the camera also lingers on everything from the various settings of a rapidly expanding Macondo to the loaves of bread and soups in Úrsula’s kitchen.

As the show presses through time, respectability politics, illegitimate children, sibling rivalries, self-harm, incest and mental illness bend and shift the Buendías, driving some family members out and pulling in others. Over the years, their home transforms from a quant bungalow to a sprawling mansion. However, the family dynamics are only one segment of this tale. Previously sequestered from the rest of civilization, Macando’s massive growth opens the doors to government interference. By Episode 6, “Colenel Aureliano Buendía,” there is also a vicious and bloody depiction of Columbia’s Thousands Days War, which pitted conservatives and liberals against one another.

The performances here are exceptional. Marleyda Soto, who plays an elder Úrsula, is practical with a vicious streak. Claudio Catañ, who portrays adult Aureliano, is haunted by premonitions and his ill-fated desires. Meanwhile, Nicole Montenegro and Laura Grueso — the younger and older versions of Rebeca, respectively — haunt each scene they are in, from the minute little Rebeca appears at the Buendía’s door holding a bag of bones to the bold and stunning woman driven by her sexuality. Still, no character is more transformed than José (portrayed by Diego Vásquez in later episodes), who becomes hyper-focused on his inventions and alchemy instead of the contentment of his wife and children.

Though the series’ pacing feels too lackadaisical at times, the beauty of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” allows the viewer to absorb every intricately curated frame and moment. As a result, the Buendías past is a continual echo no matter what generation the story is presently in. It’s a reminder of how much history informs the present and why human beings are so often doomed to repeat it. Moreover, the narrative suggests that isolation and languishing in one’s self-interest frequently breeds the rot of morality.

A monumental undertaking that unpacks every single layer of Márquez’s novel, the series sometimes feels a bit dense, allowing each sequence to air out, even when it feels painful or unnecessary. Reining in the plot for a modern-day television audience might have provided a more thrilling adaptation. Nevertheless, in allowing viewers to meander through the story, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is presented as the novelist wrote it, with a wealth of detail and profound eloquence.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” Part 1 premieres on Netflix Dec. 11.

Gabriel García Márquez, Netflix, One Hundred Years of Solitude
The teaser trailer for One Hundred Years of Solitude has arrived, giving us a glimpse at the first official screen adaptation of Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel García Márquez's magnum opus.

One Hundred Years of Solitude follows the Buendía family in Macondo, a fictional Colombian town founded by their patriarch Jose Arcadio Buendía (Marco González). Netflix's 16-episode magic realist series will track multiple generations of the family as they deal with love, war, and a curse which has confined them to a century of isolation.

Netflix buys the rights to make first ever adaptation of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'
Originally published in 1967, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely lauded and heavily influential novel which contributed to García Márquez being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. However, the author was reluctant to grant the rights for a screen adaptation up until his death in 2014, concerned that the story would not fit into a traditional movie structure and that it would not be filmed in Spanish.

His estate has now allowed Netflix to adapt the novel, with García Márquez's sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha serving as executive producers on the series.

"[I]n the current golden age of series, with the level of talented writing and directing, the cinematic quality of content, and the acceptance by worldwide audiences of programs in foreign languages, the time could not be better [for a screen adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude]," García said when the series was first announced in 2019.

Many works of literature have been deemed "unfilmable" for one reason or another — either the original book would be all but impossible to successfully translate from page to screen, or the rights have never been made available, leaving the work untouched until it becomes available via public domain. In the case of One Hundred Years of Solitude, first written in 1967, its author, the late Gabriel García Márquez, famously refused to sell the rights away, insisting that a movie could never sufficiently depict the scope and breadth of his magical realism-infused family saga. He was right.

Although Netflix first acquired the rights to One Hundred Years of Solitude in 2019, it took over six years of development to produce the first part of the final vision set to premiere this week — and the ambitious effort, led by writers José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, María Camila Arias, Albatrós González, directors Alex García López (The Witcher, The Acolyte) and Laura Mora (The Kings of the World, Green Frontier), and an exceptional ensemble consisting mostly of Colombian actors, is a masterpiece in its own right. Not only does the Spanish-language series breathe new life into Márquez's supposedly unfilmable novel, but it also succeeds as a triumph of filmmaking thanks to stunning cinematography and an epic story that spans across multiple generations of the ill-fated Buendía family.

What Is 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' About?

The story begins with an introduction to seemingly fated lovers José Arcadio Buendía (Marco González) and Úrsula Iguarán (Susana Morales), whose declaration of their intent to marry is countered by their parents' resistance. Because José Arcadio and Úrsula are cousins, their impending nuptials are clouded by a foretelling from Úrsula's mother, who warns her daughter of bearing children with pig's tails and other signs of inbreeding. But the young couple will not be deterred, which turns out to be a foreshadowing all its own about the defiance that love (and, in some cases, pure lust) can incite. After José Arcadio kills one of their neighbors in a duel of honor over insults made to his person, the newlyweds find themselves haunted by the specter of his actions, and decide that the only way to be freed is to leave their hometown for places unknown. As they, along with some close friends, travel beyond the mountains and wander through inhospitable places in search of the ocean, José Arcadio has a vision consisting of a city of mirrors. Declaring that they will set down roots by the river instead, he gives his utopia a name — Macondo.

Macondo, which is founded independently of any connections to the outside world, becomes a haven of sorts, but also a conductor for strange and inexplicable phenomena — most of which can usually be tied to the fanciful dreamer José Arcadio, the pragmatic bedrock Úrsula, and their three children, as well as their children's children. The first eight episodes of One Hundred Years of Solitude tell the story of Macondo through its humble beginnings into growth and prosperity over the years, as well as the births and deaths, triumphs and failures, and loves and losses that occur for the Buendías and their descendants. As Macondo evolves from a small, humble village into a bustling city, it also begins to face external pressures, including a brewing war between two political factions in Colombia that threatens its peaceful existence — and forces family members to take up arms against each other, in the process.

Netflix's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' Is a Tremendous Filmmaking Feat

First and foremost, Netflix's One Hundred Years of Solitude is as extraordinary in terms of visuals as it is on a narrative level. Through the efforts of López and Mora, as well as cinematographers María Sarasvati and Paulo Pérez, every frame of the series holds meaning and impact. A long-held pause on Colonel Aureliano Buendía's (Claudio Cataño) face as he stands before a firing squad infuses the moment with more weight than any line of dialogue could capture. A single, continuous tracking shot that follows a character through every room of the expansive, colorful Buendía residence fills the scene with so much lush detail that the eye can't possibly focus on it all. The proof of budget for this series, which is being billed as Netflix's most expensive Latin-American project, is beyond evident in each of the first part's eight episodes. Even Macondo becomes a character in itself as the story tracks its rise and fall over the decades, with production designers Barbara Enriquez and Eugenio Caballero leading efforts in constructing four different (and equally impressive) versions of the city to illustrate the passage of time.

Against this incredible backdrop, and paired with the talents of those behind the camera, the cast of One Hundred Years of Solitude masterfully breathes new life into some of Márquez's most memorable characters. The previously mentioned Cataño is a standout, with a range that has to include Aureliano's humbler beginnings in alchemy to the more hardened persona he adopts as a necessity of war. Additionally, the quartet of actors who portray Macondo's founding couple make the series continually compelling across the story's longer timeline — Diego Vásquez and Marleyda Soto pick up the baton from the more fiery González and Morales, as older versions of José Arcadio and Úrsula, and depict their characters' abiding devotion to each other even while death, heartbreak, and madness threaten to drive them apart.

The rapidly growing family tree might be tricky for some viewers to keep track of, especially since Márquez had a habit of repeating names — different incarnations of José Arcadio, Aureliano, and Remedios pop up more than once — but it's a story choice that makes even more sense once you know that the Buendías are destined to make the same mistakes, either as a result of their own stubbornness or a failure to acknowledge all the warning signs before it's too late. The show also doesn't shy away from depicting the original novel's more controversial aspects, including storylines involving suicide and incest, but instead carefully wields these elements to illustrate the overall curse that looms over this family across generations.

Netflix intends to only release the first part of One Hundred Years of Solitude this year, with the second half slated for premiere at a later date, but even after these initial eight episodes, the streamer can certainly add this ambitious series to its list of staggering successes. Márquez may have been resistant to the idea of his novel ever becoming a film, but the parties behind this television adaptation have adapted this monumental work of literature with evident care and authenticity — and created something that, like its magic-infused source material, will ultimately stand the test of time in a completely new medium.
