The spies say look the land that the LORD promised us is indeed a land of milk and honey abundant. BUT there are giants in the land, so we are going to live in fear rather than in courage.
Look what fear leads to, total loss of rational thinking. Because fear is an emotion, the doctrinal side of that is fear in the realm of respect and awe which they had for the giants, but not the creator.
They murmured and wept because all of Canaan seemed like a strong, unconquerable fortress. They completely forgot or ignored that GOD defeated Egypt to free them from their slavery, a nation far mightier than the Canaanites. That is the way it appeared through the human lens.
