Secrets of the Sacred Lake

The largest lake in China is on the Tibetan plateau, 3,000 metres above sea level. It is called the Blue Lake, or Qinghai Hu, and is – as most outstanding physical features of the ancient world always were – a sacred lake, with an even more sacred mountain in the middle of the lake, believed to have been home to Padmasambhava at one time.

This film looks at the lake, and its ecology, the peoples who live around it, the legends associated with it, and also visits and brings back the first photographs from the mountain rising out of the lake, where there is a small nunnery of people dedicated to a life of prayer and meditation.

We also hear about conservation efforts and the traditional lifestyle of the nomads who still roam the grasslands around these waters, refusing to be resettled as agricultural workers. This is a beautifully shot film, and an interesting documentary about one of the sacred lakes on earth.
