Jesus Was Not A Jew? Christianity, Judaism, and True Israel - Live Steam Clips

Although Jesus clearly participated within the religious system of his day he also seems impervious to it. The first century Jewish religious leaders clearly understood Jesus was not from among them (John 8:48). Because of this it is more accurate for Christians to understand Jesus was a Judean
and distinguish his ministry from the first century Jewish religion. For Christians it is important to understand that we find our origins in Jesus and not Judaism.

You can also think about it this way: Jesus is what the religious system was attempting to be, True Israel.

Here is a video I did exploring Messiah Son of Joseph and the history of Israel. https://youtu.be/hPlVgEpK6-s?si=GYcMM32q0eeTum5t

Here is the original live stream which begins with a closer look at the essay from Bruce J. Malina https://www.youtube.com/live/Al7kgIw-rIo?si=vb_tGdUZO1SieQrM

Here I a quote from the article, “Was Jesus a Jew? Was Aristotle a Greek-American? Translating "Ioudaios," By Bruce J. Malina

"To put "Jews" in the first century is simply anachronistic and, for modern Jews, ethnocentric. Yet there may be reason for confusion since the term "Ioudaios" was made to bear double freight in the first century…In John 8:31 there are Judeans who initially believe in Jesus, but after the conversation deteriorates they decide Jesus is not really one of them…The inscription over the cross (19:19) has in it a wonderful irony that would have rankled Jesus’ Judean opponents: it spells out Jesus’ identification as "Jesus of Nazareth." That is, Jesus, a Galilean, is being designated "King of the Judeans."

I do not agree with everything in the Malina article but I do think it is important for Christians to understand how the Bible uses the term Judean and why this is important to the ministry of Jesus.
