"That's not why we're cool!" Netflix has revealed the teaser trailer for an action comedy thriller called Back in Action, yet another new "what if they were once spies" movie to skip on streaming next year. This is set for release in January 2025 from Netflix, which seems like they're dumping it. The production had many issues, including medical emergencies on set, Jamie Foxx's hospitalization, and more. Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt – starring Cameron Diaz & Jamie Foxx – are dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown. Isn't this the exact same plot as about 50 other movies? Diaz previously acted alongside Foxx in the 1999 sports drama Any Given Sunday and once again in 2014 in the remake of Annie. Ironically, Annie was the last film Diaz acted in before announcing her retirement in 2018... With a little help from NFL legend Tom Brady, Foxx convinced Diaz to come out of retirement, and this is their latest movie. The cast also includes Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson, Glenn Close. This looks so cheesy and generic. Meh.

Here's the first look teaser trailer (+ poster) for Seth Gordon's Back in Action, direct from YouTube:

Production
In June 2022, it was reported that Cameron Diaz was coming out of retirement for a Seth Gordon and Brendan O'Brien penned action comedy entitled Back in Action, also set to star Jamie Foxx. Beau Bauman was revealed to be producing for Good One Productions with Seth Gordon producing for Exhibit A and Foxx, Datari Turner, O'Brien and Mark McNair executive producing.[1] In August 2022, Foxx spoke about persuading Diaz (whose last film prior to her retirement in 2014 was Annie, which he also starred in) to join the cast, telling Entertainment Tonight that "Cameron is such an incredible force and she has done so much in this business" and that he asked her "'Do you wanna have some fun? Just have some fun!' And I think that's what brought her to it...we're so happy that it's happening and looking forward to it".[2]

In November 2022, Glenn Close and Kyle Chandler were added to the cast.[3] In February 2023, Andrew Scott, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson and Jamie Demetriou joined the cast.[4] Principal photography took place in London from December 2, 2022, to March 9, 2023.[5][6] In late February 2023, Diaz shot scenes at the River Thames.[7] Filming in Atlanta began on March 27 and wrapped in late April.[8] In mid-April, while Foxx was hospitalized for a medical emergency, body doubles were used to film his remaining scenes.[9]

While Gordon and O'Brien were solely credited with the screenplay, various contributions were made by Andrea Berloff, Matteo Borghese, Joel Church-Cooper, Adam Cole-Kelly, Dana Fox, Paul Fruchbom, John Gatins, Joe Nussbaum, Cassie Pappas, Lennon Parham, Sam Pitman, Ellen Shanman, Laura Solon, David Stassen, Jessica St. Clair, Victoria Strouse, and Lillian Yu.[10]

Release
Back in Action is scheduled to be released by Netflix on January 17, 2025.[11] It was originally set to be released on November 15, 2024, before being pushed to its current release date.[12]

Followed by supporting roles in several independent films and comedies, such as My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), she has the starring role of Mary in the hit comedy There's Something About Mary (1998), which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical. She was subsequently cast in Spike Jonze's surrealist fantasy film Being John Malkovich (1999), which earned her a second Golden Globe nomination, and in Oliver Stone's sports drama Any Given Sunday (1999).

She would gain two additional Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky (2001) and Martin Scorsese's period film Gangs of New York (2002).

In the late-2000s and early-2010s, Diaz continued to star in numerous comedies such as What Happens in Vegas (2008), Bad Teacher (2011), and What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012). She also starred in the psychological horror film The Box (2009) and the big-budget action film The Green Hornet (2011). Diaz had a supporting role in Ridley Scott's crime thriller The Counselor (2013), followed by a lead role in the comedy Sex Tape (2014) and the musical-comedy Annie (2014), an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. After her appearance in Annie, Diaz announced in 2018 that she had formally retired from acting.[1] In 2022, she came out of retirement to join the Netflix action-comedy, Back in Action.[2]

Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz are sharing the screen again.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, Netflix debuted the first teaser trailer for Back in Action, showing Foxx, 56, and Diaz, 52, on a high-octane thrill ride as a married couple forced back into their old jobs as spies.

"Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown," a synopsis teases.

Back in Action stands out as Diaz's first movie role since 2014's Annie, which Foxx also starred in. Diaz's return to acting was first announced in June 2022, and she and Foxx were later seen filming the action-comedy as soon as December of that year.

Production on the movie continued through January 2024. The film's production made headlines in April 2023 when Foxx had a medical emergency that interrupted filming for a period of time.

Following his hospitalization and assurances to fans that he was "on his way to recovery" in May 2023, Foxx was seen back on set in January. “For Jamie, the show must go on and he has always been eager to see this project completed,” an entertainment source told PEOPLE at the time.

Netflix first shared footage from the movie in February as part of a larger teaser for the streamer's 2024 slate, showing the pair fighting a group of men outside a gas station in a short clip.

Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson and Jamie Demetriou also star in Back in Action. Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) directed the film, which he co-wrote with Brendan O'Brien (Neighbors).

Back in Action marks the third time Foxx and Diaz have collaborated onscreen together, after 1999's Any Given Sunday and Annie. Diaz will follow up the role with a part in Jonah Hill's upcoming film Outcome. Foxx is opening up about his health scare in a Netflix comedy special called Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was, streaming Dec. 10.

Back in Action is on Netflix Jan. 17.
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx are spies pulled out of hiding in Netflix's Back In Action. They're Emily and Matt, ex-CIA agents whose family is put in peril when their cover is blown. So they're (sort of) forced back into their former life of espionage in this big ol' action movie coming next year.

In the streaming service's new trailer, Foxx and Diaz do a bunch of spy stuff, and explain to their daughter why they're doing said spy stuff.

Horrible Bosses and Baywatch's Seth Gordon directs and co-wrote the script with Neighbours' Brendan O'Brien, so expect comedy among the action. Andrew Scott, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, and Rylan Jackson make up the star-studded cast. And it's also Diaz's first film in 10 years, and given her sublime Charlie's Angels track record, we're absolutely in.

Back In Action hits Netflix on Jan. 17, 2025.
The trailer for Back in Action has arrived. The upcoming Netflix action-comedy, which debuts in 2025, will be the first Cameron Diaz movie in more than a decade following her retirement from acting in 2014, the year in which she starred in Annie, Sex Tape, and The Other Woman. Directed by Horrible Bosses' Seth Gordon and also starring Jamie Foxx, the movie follows two former CIA operatives who are now suburban parents. However, their past comes back to haunt them when their cover is blown. The ensemble cast also includes Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, and Jamie Demetriou.

Netflix has now unveiled the official trailer for Back in Action. It opens with Cameron Diaz delivering a speech about being rejuvenated and feeling alive again that could be interpreted as a regular marital conversation, but is intercut with a series of high-octane action scenes including Jamie Foxx using a flamethrower. What follows is a blend of action and comedy as the couple's kids learn about their parents' CIA past and they go on a variety of adventures, one of which concludes with Diaz saying, "if I didn't have superior inner thigh strength, you'd be dead." Watch the trailer below:

What The Trailer Means For Back In Action
It Lives Up To Its Title
Cameron Diaz looking over her shoulder in Back in Action
The trailer for Back in Action showcases how the title is an apt description of Cameron Diaz's return to acting. The high-octane goings-on see her returning to form with the action genre after starring in her fair share of action titles earlier in her career. While she is likely best known for starring opposite Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in the Charlie's Angels movies, she has also appeared in Minority Report and Knight and Day, among others.

Diaz played Natalie in 2000's Charlie's Angels and 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

However, the Netflix action movie allows Diaz to embrace her comedy chops as well. The comedy genre is what the actor is likely best known for after her breakout performances in The Mask and My Best Friend's Wedding led to a string of lead comedy roles in movies including There's Something About Mary, The Holiday, The Sweetest Thing, and Very Bad Things. As the trailer highlights, her new project has allowed her to embrace both sides of her career in one fell swoop.

Our Take On The Back In Action Trailer
Cameron Diaz's Return Is Promising
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx urgently opening a bag in a snowy field in Back in Action
The trailer for Back in Action shows that Diaz has hit the ground running with her return to feature filmmaking. This makes her upcoming roles in projects including Shrek 5 and the Jonah Hill written and directed Outcome seem even more appealing. Although her voice performance in Shrek shows that she is not averse to returning to some of her iconic roles, Outcome seems to show that she remains interested in starring in original comedies once again, which could result in a major resurgence after a decade away from the industry.

After an 11-year hiatus from acting, Diaz has returned to the big screen in Netflix‘s spy action comedy “Back in Action,” along with her “Annie” co-star Jamie Foxx. “Back in Action” will premiere on Netflix on Jan. 17.

The comedic thriller follows Diaz and Foxx as a retired CIA agent couple, Emily and Matt, who find themselves out of the suburbs and back on the field when their cover is suddenly exposed. The trailer has plenty of action, including Foxx burning henchmen with a flamethrower and the couple escaping a plummeting plane with a parachute. Think of them like Jason Bourne, but “we remember stuff,” as Foxx quips in the trailer.
