Elephants In Botswana Threatened By Mass Death Events Due To Climate Change | Firstpost Africa

In 2020, a chilling mystery unfolded in Botswana’s sprawling wilderness. Over 350 African elephants were found dead across the Okavango Delta. With their tusks intact, poaching was ruled out, and scientists raced to uncover the truth. The culprit was found to be a toxic brew of cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae), triggered by climate change. According to researchers, several watering holes in Botswana’s Okavango Delta had been contaminated by toxic cyanobacteria across a roughly 6,000 square km area. The cyanobacteria turned vital waterholes into death traps for the majestic Elephants. As climate conditions worsen, scientists warn of similar mass die-offs in the future.
