The first footage from Disney's live-action Snow White is here.

At D23 on Aug. 9, the first teaser trailer for the movie musical debuted, revamping the 1937 classic. "Disney invites you to return to the story that started it all," Walt Disney Studios teased on Instagram, adding a red apple emoji.

The Marc Webb–directed movie wrapped filming in July 2022. The new adaptation stars Rachel Zegler as the iconic titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

Like the original, the upcoming project also includes the characters of Dopey, Grumpy, Sneezy, Bashful, Happy, Sleepy and Doc.

The film, which promises to "expand" upon the original story, features original songs from the Oscar-winning and Tony-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and was produced by Marc Platt.

Gadot told PEOPLE at the 2022 D23 expo that the role was something she took very seriously.

"I wanted to make sure that we keep her delightful and delicious, and we understand what makes her tick. Then the evilness is interesting and not just flat," she said.

"For me it was making sure the Queen is not just evil for the sake of being evil. There is a complexity. Between the two characters, it's like a mother-daughter relationship in a weird way," she added. "It's what happens to a woman when she feels like she's not relevant anymore, what can come out of her."

The Wonder Woman star also recalled her experience working with Zegler.

"At the end of the day, neither of us is the type of actor that, when it's cut we just go to our trailers and we wait for our turns again," she said. "We all stayed and it was just a wonderful, commune type of atmosphere on set. When you have this good chemistry between everybody it really shows onscreen."

Disney's Snow White,[6][1] or simply Snow White, is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Marc Platt Productions, it is a live-action reimagining[7] of Walt Disney Productions' 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which itself is based on the 1812 fairy tale "Snow White" by the Brothers Grimm. The film stars Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap, and Gal Gadot.

Plans for a remake of 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were confirmed in October 2016, with Wilson announced as a screenwriter. Webb entered talks to direct the film in May 2019 and was announced as director in September 2019. Filming took place primarily in London, England from March to July 2022, with additional filming and pick-ups taking place in June 2024. The film elicited pre-release controversies, with criticism levied against the colour-blind casting, story changes, Zegler's public disapproval of the original film, and reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs.

Snow White is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 21, 2025.

On October 31, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Walt Disney Pictures was developing a live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with Erin Cressida Wilson being in talks to write the screenplay.[17] On May 30, 2019, it was reported that Marc Webb was in talks to direct the film.[18] In November 2021, Greta Gerwig was reported to be co-writing the screenplay.[19] Gurinder Chadha was also heavily considered for the job.[20]

Casting
In June 2021, Rachel Zegler was cast in the titular role,[8] and in November, Gal Gadot was cast as the Evil Queen.[10] On December 7, 2021, during an interview with Extra, Zegler revealed that Snow White would be a lot "stronger" than the original.[21] A new casting search was announced for a young actress to star as a younger version of Snow White in the live-action remake, and Emilia Faucher was cast.[9][22] On January 12, 2022, it was announced that Andrew Burnap was cast as a new character named Jonathan in the lead male role,[11] replacing the character of The Prince.[23] At the 2022 Denver Fan Expo, Martin Klebba revealed that he would be portraying Grumpy in the film; Klebba previously played similar dwarf roles in prior productions based on the "Snow White" fairy tale: in the 2001 made-for-television film Snow White: The Fairest of Them All as Friday, and in the 2012 fantasy comedy Mirror Mirror as Butcher.[14] Colin Michael Carmichael appears in the film.[24]

Casting of Snow White
The casting of the Latina Zegler as Snow White, a character described in the original material as having skin "as white as snow",[25] attracted some controversy.[26] While appearing on Variety Studio: Actors on Actors with Andrew Garfield, Zegler responded to the Snow White casting backlash with comments such as:

Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don't normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon whether you're talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it. But you don't particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry. We need to love them in the right direction. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I am really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.

— Rachel Zegler[27]
In August 2023, it was revealed that another Latina actress by the name of Renata Vaca was one of two finalists in the casting process for the role of Snow White, the other being Zegler who ultimately won the role. Vaca, a Mexican national, stated that the casting call for the role of Snow White was "open to all ethnic groups", and that the first phase of auditioning consisted of singing a Disney Princess song. Vaca went on to be cast in the American horror sequel Saw X.[28] In October 2024, Zegler revealed that in the movie the character would be given the name Snow White after she and her parents survived a snowstorm to remind her of her resilience, which Zegler claims was a plot-line used in another version of the fairy tale, though no source was given.[29]

Reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs
In January 2022, during an interview on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, actor Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism and has played dwarfish characters in his career, commented on the upcoming live-action Snow White remake, dismissing it as a "backward story".[30] In response to Dinklage's comments, Disney stated that "to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community."[31][32] Numerous other actors with dwarfism responded negatively to Dinklage's comments, feeling he was unduly speaking on their behalf and costing them roles.[33]

In July 2023, footage of the production from Berkshire revealed that the depiction of the Seven Dwarfs had been reimagined for the film, consisting of only one actor with dwarfism along with six other non-dwarf actors of varying ethnicity, six males and one female portraying the associated set of seven individuals, who were originally all portrayed as supernatural beings from German folklore, not actual human beings.[34] After initially denying reports that these images depicted the actual film production, Disney later confirmed that they did indeed depict the production, with stand-in actors substituting for the leads (the already confirmed actor Martin Klebba not appearing in said footage).[35][36] The decision to reimagine the characters as such was criticised by mainstream and social media sources as being overly politically correct,[34][36] as well as potentially taking away acting opportunities from the dwarfism community.[37] Jackass actor Jason "Wee Man" Acuña criticised Disney for not casting dwarf actors and expressed disappointment about the changes.[38] Acuña said "You're replacing jobs that people could have as little people. It's for dwarfs. Why are you hiring 'Snow White and the seven average people'?"[39] Wrestler and actor Dylan Postl also disagreed with Dinklage's view and in an interview with Piers Morgan, he echoed Acuña's sentiments and defended the portrayal of the dwarf characters in the animated film.[40][41]

In October 2023, coinciding with an announcement of the film's delay, Disney unveiled a first-look image for the movie, which included Zegler portraying Snow White, alongside the Seven Dwarfs, all of which are CGI characters made to look similar to their appearances in the 1937 film.[6][42][43]

Filming
Filming for Snow White was originally set to begin in March 2020 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Los Angeles, California, but it was delayed to July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[44][45][46] In August 2021, it was announced that filming would take place in the United Kingdom[47] from March to July 2022.[48] Principal photography began on March 7, 2022.[49] A fire damaged the production set on March 15 at Pinewood Studios; the stage was under construction when a tree reportedly caught on fire, leading to a huge blaze.[50] A source from Disney confirmed that "no filming was underway".[51] The shooting schedule was also reconfigured for Zegler to travel to Los Angeles to present at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, in support of her West Side Story colleagues.[52] While Zegler was attending the ceremony, Gadot began filming her scenes.[53] Unlike in the original, her character sings and dances in the film.[54] On April 22, Gadot confirmed that she had completed filming her scenes,[55] much later adding that she enjoyed playing the role of the first Disney villain and that she was able to make a more dramatic role by changing her voice due to the film being a musical.[56][57] On July 13, Zegler revealed that filming had wrapped.[58][59] Additional filming took place in June 2024.[60][61][62]

Visual effects
Moving Picture Company provided the visual effects.[63]

Music
Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who previously wrote the lyrics for two new songs for Disney's 2019 remake of Aladdin, wrote new songs for the film, including a new "I Want" song for Snow White, titled "Waiting on a Wish."[64] The film is expected to also feature songs from the original film by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey, including "Heigh-Ho" and "Whistle While You Work", the latter of which was confirmed by Zegler.[17][65]

Marketing
On September 9, 2022, during Disney's 2022 D23 Expo presentation, a 30-second first-look teaser of the film as well as first-look images were previewed. There were quick flashes of several major settings, including Snow White's cottage in the woods, the intricately designed interior of the Queen's castle, and the moss-covered forest. There were also short glimpses of Gadot as the Evil Queen questioning her magic mirror, Zegler as Snow White, and Snow White's hand falling with the poisoned apple toppling along with her.[66] Gadot said about her role that playing the Evil Queen was "very different than what [she] had done before. [She is] used to playing the other end of where the heart should be", but she found it very "delightful" to "get under her skin".[67][68] The title logo of the film was also revealed.[69]

On October 27, 2023, Disney released the official first image of the film with Zegler as Snow White as well as Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy.[42][43] Zegler confirmed that there is a lot of CGI in the film, which made her feel "nervous".[65] Footage of Gadot as the Evil Queen was shown at the 2024 CinemaCon.[70] Disney presented new footage and a behind-the-scenes look at the film during the 2024 CineEurope.[71][72] The 2024 D23 Expo presented a sneak preview of the film with a clip of the musical number "Whistle While You Work" along with the first trailer.[73]

The teaser trailer for Snow White was released onto YouTube in August 2024 and became the most disliked teaser for a film trailer on the platform, garnering nearly one million dislikes[a] as opposed to over 68,000 likes within a span of three weeks.[74][75][76]

The first full trailer for the film debuted at D23 Brazil in November 2024 and was attached to select theatrical screenings of Universal Pictures' Wicked before eventually being released onto YouTube on December 3, 2024,[77][78] and became one of the most disliked movie trailers on the site.[79] Stuart Heritage of The Guardian criticized the visual effects for the animals and dwarves. He said the dwarves "look like someone has snuck into Disneyland, grabbed the statues from Snow White's Enchanted Wish and wrapped them in human flesh, as a serial killer would with a gift for their mother" and "like someone has shaved the Sonic the Hedgehog from that first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer that everyone hated."[80] Polygon's Petrana Radulovic wrote, "The new Snow White looks like it's putting in more of a plot, likely one where our plucky heroine will stand up to her despotic tyrant of a stepmother in a YA dystopian plotline out of 2014. Maybe it'll work, storywise! Visually, though, everything seems like it's working on the same budget as ABC Family's Once Upon a Time."[81]

Release
During the 2022 D23 Expo Presentation, it was announced that Snow White would be released in 2024.[82][83] On September 15, 2022, the film was announced to have a release date of March 22, 2024.[84] However, in October 2023, the film was delayed a year to March 21, 2025, with Disney claiming it was due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[6]

Controversies
Zegler's criticism of the 1937 film
Zegler attracted criticism over statements expressing disapproval of the original film, the Prince, and Snow White's character.[85][86] In an interview with Vanity Fair, Zegler criticized the "jokes" that were being made about the film's modern updates, including her casting in the role of Snow White as a Latina, and addressed the film's approach, saying:

People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it's like, yeah, it is—because it needed that. It's an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond "Someday My Prince Will Come".

— Rachel Zegler[87]
Zegler later said of the changes from the original film:

The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her... Weird! Weird. We didn't do that this time... We have a different approach to what I'm sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie, Andrew Burnap, great dude. All of Andrew’s scenes could get cut, who knows? It’s Hollywood, baby! It's one of those things that I think everyone's going to have their assumptions about what it's going to be, but it's really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful.

— Rachel Zegler[88]
In response to her comments, many rebuked her for making Snow White "more feminist",[89] while others criticised her for misinterpreting feminism, with accusations of promoting the girlboss archetype or maligning women that seek traditional feminine roles or are uninterested in power or leadership. Ashten Stein, a brand strategist, felt that Zegler's statements made it appear that she had not received media training for marketing the film.[90][91]

David Hand, whose father of the same name co-directed the original animated film, criticised the remake, describing it as "insulting" and suggesting that his father and Walt Disney would be "turning in their graves".[92] This controversy would lead to conservative media organization The Daily Wire announcing on October 16, 2023 (the day of Disney's 100th anniversary) the launch of the streaming service Bentkey and the upcoming release of their own live-action adaptation of the original fairy tale, titled Snow White and the Evil Queen, set for release in 2025 in an effort to compete with Disney's version.[93]

Stars' views on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and U.S. presidential election
The release of the film's teaser trailer provoked calls to boycott the film from both sides of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict due to Gadot and Zegler's opposing stances on the conflict, with Gadot supporting Israel and Zegler supporting Palestine.[94][95][96][97] Pro-Palestinian viewers criticized Gadot's inclusion in the film as inappropriate, while pro-Israel viewers criticized her casting in an "evil" role as offensive.[98] Alia Malak of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel said, "By choosing to directly represent genocidal Israel, Gal Gadot's films are boycottable".[97]

Following the release of the trailer, Zegler tweeted, "and always remember, free palestine".[95][97] Zegler's statement was praised by pro-Palestinian activists[99][97] and criticized by others as anti-Israel and insensitive to Gadot.[100] Ofir Akunis, Israel's consul general in New York, criticized Zegler and called for people to buy tickets to Gadot's next film.[101][97]

In October 2024, Zegler responded to the criticism during an interview, saying, "I can't watch children die. I don't think that should be a hot take. I'm only responsible for what I feel. And then I'm also responsible for how I act upon it. We're nearing one year since the horrendous attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, but I've been following this conflict for so many years. Like so many people, I'm so heartbroken by the loss of life that we're seeing with these insane death tolls coming out of both regions." She added that she would continue to support Palestine on social media.[29]

In November 2024, another call to boycott the film was made by MAGA supporters after Zegler criticized those who voted to re-elect former U.S. president Donald Trump following the 2024 United States presidential election, and made an obscene reference to the president-elect. Zegler later issued a public apology in response, saying that she meant no harm with her message while offering a call for peace: "I let my emotions get the best of me. Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse. This week has been emotional for so many of us, but I firmly believe that everyone has the right to their opinion, even when it differs from my own. I am committed to contributing positively towards a better tomorrow."[102][103][104]

It's time to head back to kingdoms far, far away with this live-action retelling of the classic Disney animation, 'Snow White'.
The first trailer of the film has officially dropped online and it offers a reimagining of the magical and enchanted 1937 beloved movie. Scheduled for a theatrical release on 21 March 2025, the film promises to bring the timeless tale to life with a fresh new perspective.
Directed by Marc Webb 'Snow White' stars Rachel Zegler in the titular role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The trailer also gives a tease at the new possibly empowering and action-packed story fused into this age-old fairytale. The clip also treats fans to a first look at the iconic Seven Dwarf characters - Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy.
The trailer also gives fans of the classic a preview of Zegler's rendition of the ballad 'Waiting on a Wish', written by EGOT-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul which will feature in the film’s soundtrack.
Zegler will be the fourth actress to take on the role of Snow White ina big screen adaptation. The role was previously played by actors like Monica Keena in the 1997 film 'Snow White: A Tale of Terror', Kristen Stewart in 'Snow White and The Huntsman' and 'Lily Collins' in 'Mirror Mirror'.
'Snow White' will be released in Indian cinemas on the same day as its global debut, 21 March 2025. The film will arrive in cinemas ahead of the Eid release 'Sikandar' starring Salman Khan in the lead.

Rachel Zegler (/ˈzɛɡlər/;[1] born May 3, 2001[2]) is an American actress and singer. She came to prominence with her film debut playing María in Steven Spielberg's musical adaptation West Side Story (2021), for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

In 2023, she played Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. She made her Broadway debut playing Juliet in a revival of Romeo + Juliet (2024).

Early life
Rachel Zegler was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, on May 3, 2001, to Gina and Craig Zegler.[3][4][5] Her paternal grandparents are Chester Joseph Zegler and Maureen Teresa (née Cahill).[6] She was named after the fictional character Rachel Green from the TV series Friends.[7] She has an older sister named Jacklyn.[8] Her mother is of Colombian descent. Her maternal grandmother immigrated from Barranquilla, Colombia, to the United States in the 1960s.[9] Her father is of Polish descent.[10][11] Due to her ethnicity, Zegler faced racial discrimination as a child.[3] At the age of four, Zegler saw her first Broadway show, Beauty and the Beast. Since then, she has been a huge fan of the theater.[3]

Zegler's first acting role came when she was 12, when she played Shprintze in a play of Fiddler on the Roof. It was then that she decided she wanted to be an actress, so she started taking voice and acting lessons.[3]

Career
Zegler began her career starring in several musicals while in high school, playing Belle in Beauty and the Beast (2016), Ariel in The Little Mermaid (2017),[12] Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street (2018), and Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical (2019).[13][14] For all four performances, she received Metro Award nominations in the Actress in a Leading Role category.[13] Her other roles have includes Serena in Legally Blonde, Cosette in Les Misérables, and Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie.[15] Her YouTube channel has been active since July 2015[16] which garnered media coverage and positive critical reception.[17][18] As of 2022, her video of herself singing "Shallow", from A Star Is Born, had garnered over 12.2 million views on Twitter.[19][10]

Zegler in 2019
In January 2018, director Steven Spielberg posted an open casting call via Twitter for a new film adaptation of West Side Story.[20] Zegler, then 16 years old, responded to the casting call tweets with videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty"; she had performed the role at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in 2017.[21][10] She was selected from over 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria, marking her film debut.[22] The film was released in December 2021,[23] and earned acclaim from critics and audiences.[24][25][26] For her performance, she received a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy,[27][28] making her the first actress of Colombian descent to win in that category as well as the youngest winner in that category at 20 years old.[29]

She starred as Anthea in the superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023).[30] The film received mixed reviews.[31] She played protagonist Lucy Gray Baird in the 2023 film adaptation of the Hunger Games prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.[32] The film received positive reviews.[33] David Ehlrich of IndieWire praised Zegler writing, "[She] is absolutely captivating in a Wild Rose-coded performance that’s equal part Southern pluck and wide-eyed terror...it is a marvel of multiplex acting". Ehlrich also noted the nuances of her performance adding "Zegler knows how to play nuance big enough for the back of the room to read it all over her face".[34]

In October 2023, Zegler announced her exit from Paddington in Peru, attributing her departure to the SAG strike. The third installment of Paddington was filmed with actress Carla Tous replacing her role as Gina Cabot.[35][36] She made an appearance in Kyle Mooney's directorial debut film Y2K, produced by A24,[37] which debuted at the South by Southwest Festival in 2024 and was released on December 6th that year to mixed reception.[38]

Zegler made her Broadway debut playing Juliet in a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, directed by Sam Gold with music by Jack Antonoff.[39] Performances are set to run from September 26, 2024 to February 16, 2025.[40] She will voice the lead character in the animated musical film Spellbound, directed by Vicky Jenson, which is scheduled to premiere on Netflix.[41][42] She will also play the titular character in Snow White, a live-action adaptation the 1937 animated Disney film, scheduled to be released in 2025.[43][44]

In the media
In 2021, Zegler was listed at number 34 on The Ringer's The Big Picture podcast's list of the top 35 actors under 35.[45] She is included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 class of 2022 list.[46] Also in 2021, AP Entertainment named her as one of the Breakthrough Entertainers of 2021.[47] She was part of the in memoriam segment of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in honour of Stephen Sondheim, alongside Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, and Leslie Odom Jr.[48]

She was initially not invited to attend the 94th Academy Awards ceremony of 2022 to support her colleagues involved in West Side Story, which received seven nominations, including Best Picture.[49] After some controversy over the perceived snub in the media,[50] the Academy invited her to be a presenter[51] for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.[52][53]

Personal life
In February 2021, Zegler and actor Josh Andrés Rivera confirmed that they were dating. The two had met on the set of West Side Story and later starred in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes together.[54]

Zegler considers Barbra Streisand to be one of her primary influences.[55] In 2021, Streisand sent Zegler a copy of her album Release Me 2 and a copy of the book Streisand From A to Z, along with a note reading, "For R., from B.," to which Zegler responded, "There's simply no way this is real!"[56][57]

Political views
Zegler has publicly supported Palestine in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict since 2021. In a January 2024 Instagram story, she urged people to pressure government leaders to support a ceasefire in Gaza during the Israel–Hamas war. That August, she tweeted, "and always remember, free palestine [sic]."[58][59]

In November 2024, Zegler criticized Donald Trump and his supporters, claiming there is a "deep, deep sickness" in the United States and accusing Trump of "threaten[ing] our democracy."[60] She also wrote, "May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace."[61] She later apologized for "contribut[ing] to the negative discourse."[61]
