"Think they'll still do graduation?" A24 has revealed a second trailer for Y2K, a 1999 party comedy marking the feature directorial debut of comedian Kyle Mooney. Set to debug theaters starting in early December just before New Years coming up. It first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival to good reviews along with some negative ones, too. Two high school nobodies make the decision to crash the last major celebration before the new millennium on New Year's Eve 1999. The night gets even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight. The hilarious NYE horror comedy stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Alicia Silverstone, also featuring The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Durst. Still reminds me a bit of Bodies Bodies Bodies, though it also seems like it's inspired by the antics of This is The End. This looks totally wild and crazy and exactly my kind of ridiculous 90s humor! Tons of fun especially with all tech turning into literal monsters coming after them. Can't wait to watch this.

Here's the second official trailer for Kyle Mooney's film Y2K, direct from A24's YouTube:

Brief intro via SXSW: "On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy." Y2K (a reference to the Y2K New Years) is directed by American comedy actor / writer / filmmaker Kyle Mooney, now making his feature directorial debut after writing the script for Brigsby Bear, as well as episodes of "Saturday Morning All Star Hits!", "Nathan For You", and "Comedy Bang Bang: The Podcast" previously. The screenplay is written by Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter. Produced by Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Alison Goodwin, Chris Storer, Cooper Wehde, Evan Winter. This first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year as a Headliner. A24 will debut Mooney's Y2K in theaters nationwide starting December 6th, 2024 this fall. Who's down?

Y2K is a 2024 American disaster comedy horror film[3][4] directed by Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, written by Mooney and Evan Winter. It stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, Fred Durst, and Alicia Silverstone as a group of high school students who attempt to survive when the year 2000 problem causes all technology worldwide to come to life and turn against humanity.

The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 9, 2024, and was theatrically released by A24 in the United States on December 6, 2024. The film received mixed reviews from critics and has grossed $2 million.

Plot
In 1999, best friends Eli, Danny, and Garrett discuss plans for New Year's Eve while their parents are out. Eli has a crush on his classmate Laura, but is too nervous to talk to her despite Danny's encouragment to kiss her at midnight. They watch as Laura and her friends Trevor, Madison, and Raleigh sneak out some alcohol and decide to crash a party held by Soccer Chris, Laura's boyfriend.

While partying, Eli watches in dismay as Chris and Laura kiss at midnight. The power goes out and a student is found dead with a piece of a fan lodged in his head. Suddenly, a toy car arrives on its own and burns Trevor's face, killing him. The terrified partygoers realize that all technology have become sentient and attempt to leave, but many of them are gruesomely killed. In the ensuing chaos, a VCR drills Madison's head with a VHS tape, Chris' head is melted by a microwave, and a Tamagotchi kills Raleigh.

Eli, Danny, and Laura escape with juvenile delinquents Farkas, CJ, and Ash, but Danny is fatally impaled by a blade and Farkas dies when he hits the ground while attempting to rail a broken pole on his skates. The group go to an old mill without electricity while the sentient machines kill several residents throughout the town. They also find Garrett and Laura's ex-boyfriend Jonas, and learn the threat is a collective consciousness of all electronic devices worldwide planning to enslave humanity.

Laura successfully creates a kill code to shut down the algorithm, now dubbed itself as the "Amalgamation", but a computer attacks her. Jonas douses it in water, shutting it down. The group is then cornered by the Amalgamation, who is using electronics to make itself bigger. Garrett tries to fend it off, but is decapitated. The group hide in portable toilets and ride the Amalgamation down a hill. They take refuge in a VHS store and meet musician Fred Durst, whom they encourage to join.

The group arrive at the local high school, where they learn the machines are there due to a new internet connection installed. They sneak inside and discover the townspeople have been reduced to mindless slaves by brain-implanted chips. CJ sacrifices himself to save Fred from a machine while the group learn the Amalgamation has now grown to a monstruous size. Fred, Ash, and Jonas distract the machines guarding the townspeople to let Laura make her way into the Amalgamation, but it electrocutes her.

Eli arrives in time to save Laura and insert the kill code, but it has no use as the Amalgamation keeps mocking and electrocuting them. Eli then uses a condom Danny had given him earlier and wraps it around Laura's hand like a protective glove. While Fred, Ash, and Jonas continue distracting the machines, Eli and Laura successfully insert the kill code, shutting down the algorithm worldwide, and destroying the Amalgamation. Eli shares a kiss with Laura and they reunite with the surviving townspeople as dawn breaks.

Five years later, in 2005, a now college-aged Eli, Laura, and Ash visit their friends' graves. While they leave the cemetery, Ash's new iPod starts to glitch, revealing that the algorithm has not been fully destroyed.

Rachel Zegler (/ˈzɛɡlər/;[1] born May 3, 2001[2]) is an American actress and singer. She came to prominence with her film debut playing María in Steven Spielberg's musical adaptation West Side Story (2021), for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

In 2023, she played Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. She made her Broadway debut playing Juliet in a revival of Romeo + Juliet (2024).

Early life
Rachel Zegler was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, on May 3, 2001, to Gina and Craig Zegler.[3][4][5] Her paternal grandparents are Chester Joseph Zegler and Maureen Teresa (neé Cahill).[6] She was named after the fictional character Rachel Green from the TV series Friends.[7] She has an older sister named Jacklyn.[8] Her mother is of Colombian descent. Her maternal grandmother immigrated from Barranquilla, Colombia, to the United States in the 1960s.[9] Her father is of Polish descent.[10][11] Due to her ethnicity, Zegler faced racial discrimination as a child.[3] At the age of four, Zegler saw her first Broadway show, Beauty and the Beast. Since then, she has been a huge fan of the theater.[3]

Zegler's first acting role came when she was 12, when she played Shprintze in a play of Fiddler on the Roof. It was then that she decided she wanted to be an actress, so she started taking voice and acting lessons.[3]

Career
Zegler began her career starring in several musicals while in high school, playing Belle in Beauty and the Beast (2016), Ariel in The Little Mermaid (2017),[12] Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street (2018), and Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical (2019).[13][14] For all four performances, she received Metro Award nominations in the Actress in a Leading Role category.[13] Her other roles have includes Serena in Legally Blonde, Cosette in Les Misérables, and Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie.[15] Her YouTube channel has been active since July 2015[16] which garnered media coverage and positive critical reception.[17][18] As of 2022, her video of herself singing "Shallow", from A Star Is Born, had garnered over 12.2 million views on Twitter.[19][10]

Zegler in 2019
In January 2018, director Steven Spielberg posted an open casting call via Twitter for a new film adaptation of West Side Story.[20] Zegler, then 16 years old, responded to the casting call tweets with videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty"; she had performed the role at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in 2017.[21][10] She was selected from over 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria, marking her film debut.[22] The film was released in December 2021,[23] and earned acclaim from critics and audiences.[24][25][26] For her performance, she received a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy,[27][28] making her the first actress of Colombian descent to win in that category as well as the youngest winner in that category at 20 years old.[29]

She starred as Anthea in the superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023).[30] The film received mixed reviews.[31] She played protagonist Lucy Gray Baird in the 2023 film adaptation of the Hunger Games prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.[32] The film received positive reviews.[33] David Ehlrich of IndieWire praised Zegler writing, "[She] is absolutely captivating in a Wild Rose-coded performance that’s equal part Southern pluck and wide-eyed terror...it is a marvel of multiplex acting". Ehlrich also noted the nuances of her performance adding "Zegler knows how to play nuance big enough for the back of the room to read it all over her face".[34]

In October 2023, Zegler announced her exit from Paddington in Peru, attributing her departure to the SAG strike. The third installment of Paddington was filmed with actress Carla Tous replacing her role as Gina Cabot.[35][36] She made an appearance in Kyle Mooney's directorial debut film Y2K, produced by A24,[37] which debuted at the South by Southwest Festival in 2024 and was released on December 6th that year to mixed reception.[38]

Zegler made her Broadway debut playing Juliet in a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, directed by Sam Gold with music by Jack Antonoff.[39] Performances are set to run from September 26, 2024 to February 16, 2025.[40] She will voice the lead character in the animated musical film Spellbound, directed by Vicky Jenson, which is scheduled to premiere on Netflix.[41][42] She will also play the titular character in Snow White, a live-action adaptation the 1937 animated Disney film, scheduled to be released in 2025.[43][44]

In the media
In 2021, Zegler was listed at number 34 on The Ringer's The Big Picture podcast's list of the top 35 actors under 35.[45] She is included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 class of 2022 list.[46] Also in 2021, AP Entertainment named her as one of the Breakthrough Entertainers of 2021.[47] She was part of the in memoriam segment of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in honour of Stephen Sondheim, alongside Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, and Leslie Odom Jr.[48]

She was initially not invited to attend the 94th Academy Awards ceremony of 2022 to support her colleagues involved in West Side Story, which received seven nominations, including Best Picture.[49] After some controversy over the perceived snub in the media,[50] the Academy invited her to be a presenter[51] for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.[52][53]

Personal life
In February 2021, Zegler and actor Josh Andrés Rivera confirmed that they were dating. The two had met on the set of West Side Story and later starred in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes together.[54]

Zegler considers Barbra Streisand to be one of her primary influences.[55] In 2021, Streisand sent Zegler a copy of her album Release Me 2 and a copy of the book Streisand From A to Z, along with a note reading, "For R., from B.," to which Zegler responded, "There's simply no way this is real!"[56][57]

Political views
Zegler has publicly supported Palestine in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict since 2021. In a January 2024 Instagram story, she urged people to pressure government leaders to support a ceasefire in Gaza during the Israel–Hamas war. That August, she tweeted, "and always remember, free palestine [sic]."[58][59]

In November 2024, Zegler criticized Donald Trump and his supporters, claiming there is a "deep, deep sickness" in the United States and accusing Trump of "threaten[ing] our democracy."[60] She also wrote, "May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace."[61] She later apologized for "contribut[ing] to the negative discourse."[61]

A24 has released the official trailer for the apocalyptic comedy “Y2K,” starring Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler and Julian Dennison.

Per the official logline: “On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.”

The trailer shows several homicidal machines in “Y2K,” including a Tamagotchi drilling a whole in a someone’s head, a VHS player hurling tapes at high school students, and a pink toy jeep lighting someone on fire.

“Y2K” marks “Saturday Night Live” veteran Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut. Mooney directed the sci-fi comedy from a script he co-wrote with Evan Winter, while Jonah Hill served as a producer on the film.

Variety‘s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review, “‘Y2K’ is swimming in succulent period references and detail. A scuzzy local DVD store. A CD mixtape. The Pam and Tommy tape. Abercrombie. White kids doing their white version of freestyling. ‘Praise You’ and ‘Tubthumping.’ Not to mention the last fading version of that mythic figure, the video-store clerk — in this case a blissed-out druggie with hippie dreads named Garrett, played by Mooney, whose cracked performance, all ‘Yo!’ and ‘wha-a-a-at?‘ and stoner grins, is one of the most winning things in the movie.”

“Y2K” premieres in theaters Dec. 6.

Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney, blends late-90s nostalgia with disaster horror and irreverent comedy for a wild ride.
The trailer showcases gnarly kills and practical effects, hinting at a darkly comedic gore-filled apocalypse narrative.
Led by Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison, Y2K promises a nostalgic yet thrilling experience for audiences.
The latest trailer for A24's highly anticipated film Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney, has finally dropped, and it's every bit as wild as fans of the Saturday Night Live alum might expect. The movie, which had its world premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) in March 2024, is slated for a broader release on December 6, 2024. With its blend of late-90s nostalgia, disaster horror, and irreverent comedy, Y2K is shaping up to be a standout in the year's film lineup.

As the trailer progresses, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary New Year's Eve. What begins as a nostalgic high school party quickly descends into a nightmarish scenario where the infamous Y2K bug isn't just a scare — it triggers a real-world apocalypse. The tone shifts rapidly from a Can't Hardly Wait-style teen comedy to something more akin to Shaun of the Dead as the characters navigate increasingly bizarre and deadly situations.

The trailer teases some of the film's more outrageous moments, including gnarly and graphic kills executed with impressive practical effects. These scenes suggest that Y2K will not shy away from the darkly comedic gore that Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter have infused into the script. Fans of Mooney’s previous work on SNL and his collaborations with Dave McCary will recognize the use of stop-motion and practical effects, which add a distinct and unsettling realism to the chaotic events.

Who Is in 'Y2K'?

Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison lead the charge with fun onscreen chemistry that the trailer highlights, recalling the camaraderie of classic comedic duos like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Rachel Zegler, who plays Martell's romantic interest, also gets her moment in the spotlight, showcasing her range beyond the dramatic roles she’s known for.

Early reviews from SXSW have noted that while Y2K is ambitious in its genre-blending, it does face challenges in maintaining a consistent tone, particularly in its latter half. However, the film's audacity and commitment to its chaotic premise are evident even in this brief trailer. A24 has a history of backing unique and unconventional projects, and Y2K looks to be no exception.

For those who lived through the Y2K scare or have a soft spot for the late 90s, Y2K promises to be both a nostalgic trip and a thrilling ride. The film will hit theaters on December 6, 2024, and if the trailer is any indication, it's one that shouldn’t be missed. Check out the trailer above and our chat with the cast and director below.

A24 has shared the official Y2K trailer for its newest disaster comedy starring Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler. Following its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival last March, the movie is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 6, 2024.

“It’s New Year’s Eve 1999. Two high school nobodies decide to crash the last big party before the new millennium. When the clock strikes midnight, the night gets more insane than they ever could have imagined,” reads the synopsis.

What happens in the Y2K trailer?
The video highlights the sudden uprising of technology, where all machines have suddenly come to life with the intent of killing humans. In the middle of the chaos is a group of high schoolers fighting for their survival after their house party is interrupted by the disaster.

Y2K is written and directed by Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter. The ensemble cast also includes Jaeden Martell (It movies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), Lachlan Watson (Chucky), Mason Gooding (Scream VI), Tim Heidecker (Us), Eduardo Franco (Booksmart, Stranger Things), Miles Robbins (Blockers), Fred Hechinger (Fear Street, The White Lotus), Daniel Zolghadri (Funny Pages), and rapper The Kid Laroi.

The project hails from Jonah Hill, who has signed on to produce the project through his Strong Baby banner. This marks Hill’s latest collaboration with A24 after previously working together in his feature directorial debut Mid90s. It is also produced by Winter, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin, and Chris Storer (The Bear).

Y2K
Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney makes his feature directorial debut with a film that tackles the unease that gripped the world as it approached the new millennium… except that here the tech-driven apocalypse appears to actually, you know, happen.

“Someone’s on the net!” says an alarmed Rachel Zegler in the fun retro-fuelled trailer, which features a remixed speech from former U.S. President Bill Clinton, his voice layered over images of 90s dial-up tones and Y2K-panic scenes. The film centres on two high school juniors who crash a New Year’s Eve bash, only to find themselves in a tech-induced nightmare.

Apart from Zegler, the cast includes Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, and Alicia Silverstone. The film’s producers include Jonah Hill (it’s easy to imagine him and Seth Rogen making a film like this) and Christopher Storer.

Y2K opens in the U.S. on 6 December.
