James Alexander Chase Stokes (born September 16, 1992)[1] is an American actor. He is known for starring in the Netflix teen drama series Outer Banks (2020−present).[2][3]
Early life
Stokes was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the only child of Jeff Stokes and Jennifer Canning. Chase's parents divorced when he was 4 years old.[4] He then moved with his mother to Canton, a suburb of Atlanta[5] and later to Orlando, Florida as a teenager where he attended Timber Creek High School.[6] He received his bachelor's degree at Valencia College and then went to University of Central Florida and Seminole State College.[7] Growing up, he aspired to become a professional ice hockey player.[8]
Career
Chase Stokes had small roles in television at the beginning of his acting career, including Stranger Things, Daytime Divas, and Tell Me Your Secrets.[9] He originally turned down an offer to audition for Outer Banks in February 2019, before reading for the role of Topper and later John B.[10] The first season of the show was released on April 15, 2020, a second season was announced July 2020,[11] and released in July 2021. The third and fourth seasons were released in February 2023 and November 2024 respectively, with a fifth and final season being announced for 2025.[12]
In the same month, it was announced that Stokes would play TJ in One Of Us Is Lying. However, after filming the pilot in 2019, it was announced that he would not return due to a scheduling conflict with the second season of Outer Banks and he was replaced.[13] In September 2020, he and Madelyn Cline starred in the music video for Kygo and Donna Summer's single "Hot Stuff". In October 2021, Stokes was cast in Uglies, a dystopian fantasy film based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld.[14] The film will be released by Netflix and it wrapped production in December 2021.[15] In June 2022, it was announced that Stokes was cast in the film Music Got Me Here, based on the life of music therapist Tom Sweitzer.[16]
In August 2022, it was announced that Stokes would star in the military thriller film Valiant One.[17] The film wrapped production in late October 2022.[18] In January 2023, it was announced that he had been cast in Marked Men, a young-adult romance film based on the book Rule by Jay Crownover. He will play the lead male role of Rule Archer.[19] The film wrapped production in late 2022.[20] The film is set to be released in theaters on January 22, 2025.[21]
Personal life
In June 2020, Stokes announced that he was in a relationship with his Outer Banks co-star Madelyn Cline.[22] The couple split in October 2021.[23] He and country singer Kelsea Ballerini have been dating since January 2023.[24]
Stokes says the quality he looks for most in a person is someone who can make him laugh. He says he suffers from Imposter Syndrome.[25]

Briarcliff Entertainment is inviting Collider readers to buckle up today and brace themselves for the exclusive first look at the trailer for the studio’s upcoming action flick, Valiant One. Starring Chase Stokes (Outer Banks) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), the war-centered flick is filled with explosive moments that are showcased all throughout the trailer. At the center of the story is Stokes’ Captain Edward Brockman, the leader of a unit of non-combat tech specialists who finds himself and his people trapped in enemy territory. With no option but to fight their way out, the group must push through the North Korean army and attempt to get to safety.
From the very first few seconds of the trailer, it’s clear that Captain Brockman is going to be woefully underprepared for the surprise mission that awaits him. Snippy about how short of a job they’re being sent out for, the Captain cracks one or two jokes before Condor’s Selby tries to reel him in and remind him of the importance of the job. What should have just been a 20-minute procedure turns into a life-or-death situation after the group’s helicopter comes crashing out of the sky. Realizing that there’s no way out — as they’re in hostile North Korean territory — Captain Brockman’s attitude takes a quick turn as he realizes how deathly serious the situation is. With all eyes on him, the Captain is forced to step up to the plate and help navigate his troops out of this incredibly grim situation with the skills that he’s learned working alongside fighters as a tech specialist.
A ‘Valiant One’ Roll Call
Joining Stokes and Condor on the suicide mission is an ensemble cast that includes Desmin Borges (You’re the Worst), Callan Mulvey (Heartbreak High), Daniel Jun (The Fall of the House of Usher), Jonathan Whitesell (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Stephen Adekolu (Snowpiercer), Diana Tsoy (Peter Pan & Wendy), Ronald Patrick Thompson (The Art of Racing in the Rain) and more. The project is the latest to come from filmmaker Steve Barnett, who holds credits as a producer on titles such as The Spiderwick Chronicles and 300.
As for its leading stars, many will recognize Stokes from his current role on the smash-hit Netflix series, Outer Banks, which recently was announced to be going into its final season. In feature-length form, the actor was most recently spotted in the streamer’s adaptation of Uglies. Fully switching gears from what we’ve seen her in in the past, Condor built a name for herself through the rom-com film series, To All the Boys. She’s also appeared in other productions, including X-Men: Apocalypse, Alita: Battle Angel, and Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.
Check out the exclusive first look at the trailer for Valiant One above and see it in cinemas on January 31, 2025.

Lana Condor
Trapped deep in enemy territory, two soldiers from vastly different backgrounds must team up to survive in the gripping military thriller Valiant One.
The film features two Netflix stars, Chase Stokes, known from the hit teen show "Outer Banks," and Lana Condor, from the hit "To All the Boys" film series.
The movie begins when a US Army helicopter crashes in the heart of North Korea, leaving the surviving soldiers stranded in extremely hostile territory. With serious casualties and their commanding officer critically injured, a young and inexperienced Army captain (Stokes), trained more for analyzing data than leading troops, is thrust into command for the first time in his life. Facing overwhelming odds, he must rely on the resourcefulness of a skilled Army Specialist (Condor) to navigate a dangerous escape route through a enemy-controlled forest.
The thriller also co-stars Desmin Borges, Callan Mulvey, Jonathan Whitesell, and Daniel Jun.
Directed by Steve Barnett in his feature directorial debut, "Valiant One" seemingly channels the intensity of military action thrillers like "Behind Enemy Lines," Guy Ritchie's "The Covenant," and "Land of Bad." Barnett, previously recognized for his producing work on hits such as "300," "The Spiderwick Chronicles," and "Land of the Dead," now steps into the director's chair, working from a script he cowrote with Eric Tipton.
"Valiant One" is set to debut in theaters on January 31st. Watch the trailer, above.
