Kanchanaburi is an old city with a long history dated back to the Ayutthaya era. Serving as a fortress city for both Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin kingdoms (1548-1784), the ancient settlement of Kanchanaburi was a fortress to protect from invasions from the Three Pagodas Pass at the Thai-Burma border. It was abandoned by order of Thai king Rama III in the early 1800’s and everyone settled in the new city about 30 km away.

Located near the Khwae Yai River, on the northeastern bank of its confluence with the Lam Taphoen River. It features four stone corner fortifications and an earthen wall. Its history dates back to the Ayutthaya era.

While most architectural structures now remain as ruins, a number of Buddhist temple still exist, such as Wat Khun Paen, Wat Mae Mai and Wat Pa Lelai, an ancient temple best known for the giant Buddha statue with a unique posture when receiving alms from an elephant and a monkey.

Excavations took place in the late 1980s, and restoration work was completed in 2009. The ruins are now open to the public, although rarely promoted as a tourist destination.

It’s an interesting site for history lovers. It’s not difficult to reach and you will probably be alone while you explore the ancient town of Kanchanaburi.
