Beek-Ubbergen

Just outside Nijmegen towards the German border there are two places of beauty called the Ooij Polder and the start of the ‘Nijmeegse Heuvelrug’, part of the Lower Rhine Heights. For people living outside The Netherlands it must be a sorry sight but at least there are hills and I know them very well for whole my life. My paintings The Ooij Polder (2013) and The Elysian Fields (2013) are situated in them.

Exact spot

The drawing was not made at the spot but today. I took the photo in Spring though but weather conditions last days were pretty bad. Perhaps this one expresses my longing for sketching outdoors. Hopefully we still will get some Indian Summer days this year. The spot by the way is in The Ooij Polder, along the riverside of ’t Meertje. On the other bank the village of Beek-Ubbergen starts.

Impressionism in Colored Pencil

I wanted to do an impressionistic landscape again like my previous drawing Notenboompark 18-09-20 since this only the second executed in colored pencil in that style. My diagonally layed hatched strokes accidentally fit the angle of the sun rays perfectly, whereas the strokes depicting the water were placed in the direction of the waves. It was a great study after color relations with colored pencil. I noticed I had to work a little bit harder in order to get some saturation. As to this the paper is very unforgiven and the nature of the colored pencil is that a stroke once laid, cannot be undone. Nevertheless, I think I managed to keep my colors clean.
