ISRAEL Lobby CAUGHT Red Handed In Terror Law Scandal?
Right, so this is a video I’ve wanted to make for a wee while but events kept getting in the way and pushing it back so I’m determined to get it done today and it concerns the issue of proscription, of proscribing groups the UK deems to be extremist in their nature and this is I think especially relevant at this moment in time, when there is a concerted push underway to overturn the proscription of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS, the so-called Syrian rebels who have overthrown the Assad regime in Syria, who are being hailed as heroes, yet are the modern face of former Al-Qaeda, ISIS and Al-Nusrah Front fighters.
What we’re seeing here is a dramatic rehabilitation of people, of groups, who under a new name, or at least a name many of us in the west have been unfamiliar with, who have been responsible for some of the worst acts of terrorism in living memory, yet now it is OK to support them, because they support Israel.
To support a proscribed group is a crime. It is against the Terrorism Act of 2000 to show support for a proscribed group, yet an Israel friendly group of terrorists can be forgiven that, yet those fighting Israel are not and this actually goes much deeper than you might think and it seems reasonable to ask in light of this who exactly decides who get’s proscribed, because I’ve got a shock for you.
Right, so proscription of certain groups on the grounds of terrorism, under the terms of the Terrorism Act 2000 is a crime and we’ve seen it abused to crack down on those calling out Israeli atrocity in Gaza, Lebanon, now Syria as even more tanks and militaria roll towards Damascus, Israel now only some 16 miles from the Syrian capital and yet Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS, the people who have overthrown the Assad dictatorship haven’t fired a single shot at them, all despite Israel bombing the living daylights out of Damascus, allegedly targeting military sites to prevent advanced Syrian tech falling into the wrong hands, but HTS are their allies aren’t they? Israel have been supporting them for long enough, medical supplies, and now invading Syria without a peep being blown Turkey and the US have also backed them and now that they’ve taken over, an Al-Qaeda administration in Syria allied to Israel as it were, all of sudden talk of removing the proscription of HTS from UK statute.
HTS was proscribed in 2017 here in the UK, because of its past association with Al-Qaeda, the fact Al-Qaeda figures were involved in its creation, that the current form of HTS was borne largely out of the AL-Qaeda Syrian affiliate group the Al-Nusrah Front, but also Al-Qaeda itself and also ISIS. Perfectly understandable why such a group should be proscribed. Yet now they are forming a government, they are all of a sudden being legitimised. Now you can argue for or against that if you compare them to 53 years of the Assad family’s domination in Syria, but they were proscribed for a reason and just because they’ve conquered, should not automatically warrant our support and diplomatic ties.
Yet still that is a conversation happening in the UK and it seems the only logical conclusion to that is the groups ties to Israel right now.
Starmer, for once to my surprise, is saying it’s too early for that and I do agree with him, but only because I expect Israel to stab this lot in the back when they’ve exceeded their usefulness and with talk of HTS moving on Jerusalem and Gaza yet, those cheering them in Syria might sing a different tune if they start killing civilians in Gaza next, doing Israel’s dirty work for them.
Back to the matter of proscription though.
Once a group has been proscribed, which requires an order being made to parliament and a vote being cast on it, which upon passing grants the Home Secretary the power to proscribe that group, any support for that group becomes a crime under the terrorism act.
HTS is one such group, Hamas and Hezbollah are others amongst a list of some 80 organisations worldwide. I’m coming back to Hamas particularly in a moment though.
So these groups are all proscribed, but that proscription affects both the militant arms and the political arms of any such group. For example, the IRA and Sinn Fein during the Northern Ireland peace process and the negotiating of the end of the troubles, it was widely accepted that Sinn Fein was the political arm and the IRA was militant. Now whilst the IRA was a proscribed group, Sinn Fein were not, and this enabled those negotiations and eventual peace. Therefore by proscribing any group, be that HTS or Hamas or Hezbollah you cut off any peace process involving them. This was obviously quite stupid, or I think obviously quite stupid, when Hamas for example were the governing power in Gaza from 2006 and Hezbollah form part of the Lebanese legislature, it shows no intent to have political discourse with these groups and again, given everything we’ve seen, the fawning towards Israel by both Conservative and Labour administrations, that that was down to that unassailable devotion to the genocidal apartheid Zionist state.
It does make it difficult to support resistance against Israeli atrocity when you cannot avoid talking about Hamas and Hezbollah when supporting Palestinian or Lebanese resistance, there doesn’t need to be an overt declaration of support for those groups to support an arrest under the Terrorism Act, just a suspicion and this is why the arrests of Pro Palestine pro Israeli resistance journalists and activists like Richard Medhurst, Sarah Wilkinson and Natalie Strecker happened. There needs just be a suspicion, so the bar is very low to trigger an arrest. Therefore anyone talking about the region, the state and backing Israeli resistance, resisting their genocide can be found to be an excuse to arrest people and we’ve seen that happen.
This is why there is now talk of lifting that proscription, deproscribing HTS, because they are Israel allies. Now let’s come back to Hamas, because there’s a story behind their proscription, which again implicates Israel and possibly the influence of the Israel Lobby both in their proscription and now through the narratives of politicians and the media in the UK to deproscribe HTS.
Hamas was facing deproscription itself, having been proscribed since the Blair years. Like the differentiation between Sinn Fein and the IRA, a distinction was being pointed out within Hamas too, there was a definite political wing, as I said, they were the government in Gaza from 2006, as well as there being the ongoing resistance to Israeli occupation. I’m struck whilst I was writing this that no such distinction has been identified at all within HTS, but a wholehearted deproscription is being demanded by some quarters, but despite that distinction it was deemed at the time by the then Home Secretary, that any such distinction between political and terrorist aims within Hamas was artificial and instead of deproscribing Hamas, the proscription instead got extended. This was only 3 years ago, in November of 2021. The Home Secretary at the time, was Priti Patel.
She made clear that not only was she proscribing Hamas but also its political wing, thereby cutting off all diplomatic ties despite a two state solution supposedly being UK policy. It has always been a sham. She stated this was an important measure to support Jewish people, because Hamas was antisemitic. Was she leaned on by the Israel Lobby to do this though, well, something else happened that November.
A new memorandum of understanding was signed on the 29th November regarding trade, so the timing of this Hamas proscription extension was suspicious.
Previously under Theresa May, Patel had held secret meetings as International Development Secretary with Israeli figures including Benjamin Netanyahu, where International Development cash was being lined up for Israel to use in the occupied Golan Heights, now even more of which has been taken over by Israel since HTS took control of Syria. That of course resulted in her eventual sacking.
Patel was also told by Israel that Jeremy Corbyn had links to Hamas and the UK was a fundraising ground for Hamas. So all in all, was a proscription order a sweetener, or a requirement for the new trade deal? That memorandum of understanding?
Now, there clearly shouldn’t necessarily be a difference between exempting the militant or political wings of an organisation, but that swings both ways, because given what Israel is doing and has done for 15 months now, Israel should be proscribed in its entirety as well.
Patel, ridiculously, is now Shadow Foreign Secretary so Tories never learn and are as loyal to Israel as Starmer’s Labour are proving to be. Nobody less qualified or less trustworthy for that job given her previous conduct but there we are.
Now, in light of HTS’ proscription potentially being lifted, perhaps Hamas might like to get some press out of this, or Hezbollah even, they’ve been proscribed since 2019, so even less time than HTS have, but under the terms of the Terrorism Act 2000, under section 4, Hamas can challenge their proscription and even they were to fail as they probably would, I personally think it’d expose some significant double standards here again in the UK and the dividing line is essentially who is on Israel’s side and who isn’t all in all, begging the question who is deciding who is a terrorist organisation here in the UK, at least as far as the Middle East goes? There are questions raised over the situation with Hamas and Hezbollah compared to that of HTS.
More to the point, how can we speak freely on this and avoid the risk of arrest? It’s bloody difficult because the Terrorism Act is so open to abuse given how it is written, which is why we’ve seen the arrests that we have.
Calling for peace, which is apparently what everyone wants, whether you necessarily believe them or not, by only legally being allowed to debate with one side is a farce. The Terrorism Act has been used as a blunt tool to silence dissent and well history shows it simply doesn’t work and people will speak out, especially when they see what appears to be a gross injustice and diplomatic stupidity.
All of this is contributing to absolute annihilation of Labour’s reputation and how Starmer’s leadership is being viewed. No wonder he’s resorted to his only trick in the book and conducted a reset of his leadership already, dumping everything he said he stood for election on and expecting us to just accept it. We won’t, we aren’t and he’s getting handed his backside over it.
