The story of a hotel that came before its time

It was in 1977 that the company Indústria Açoriana Turístico-Hotelereira (IATH), with French and Belgian shareholders, decided to invest in the construction of the Baíha Palace hotels in Água d'Alto (Vila Franca do Campo) and the Monte Palace in Vista do Rei, Sete Cidades. The construction project was carried out by architects Olivier Clément Cacoubd and Yves Roa.

After many years of delays, the Monte Palace was inaugurated in April 1989 and, at the time, the company already had significant debts.
The luxury hotel, despite appearing out of time (as tourism was taking timid steps towards growth), had a great chance of being a successful tourism project.
Expectations of tourist flows to the hotel were raised, but they didn't materialize and, in October 1990, the owners declared bankruptcy despite the fact that the 'Monte Palace' won the 'Best Hotel of the Year in Portugal' award in 1990, the same week it closed.

The hotel has 5 floors with a total of 88 rooms, most of them suites. It had two very well-equipped restaurants, where silver cutlery, crystal glasses and embroidered napkins were used.
There was also a bar, three conference rooms, a games room, a beauty salon, a bank, a dance nightclub and other stores. More than a hundred people worked at the hotel every day.

Until 2011, the site was guarded to prevent vandalism and break-ins. But since then, there has been no more surveillance. And strangers started stealing everything inside the hotel. A year later, the government removed all the remaining glass to prevent them from hurting people.

In 2016, artist Javier de Riba painted the floor of the hotel hall with blue flowers for the annual Walk and Talk art festival, which took place there. Due to the poor condition of the hotel, the painting quickly faded and is not visible today.

With a built area of 13,104 square meters, the hotel was bought in 2017 by the Chinese investor group Level Constellation, which intended to renovate and reopen it in 2021. However, until now, nothing had happened until the project of the company 'Constellation Version, S.A.', created in 2018 and based in Rua D. João III, in Ponta Delgada, emerged to get the hotel unit out of the ruin it is in.
With the scale of tourism in the region, this could be the right time to start work on the Monte Palace hotel in Vista do Rei, now with 200 more rooms than the 88 it has.
