On November 30, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Hartford police officers responded to a disturbance at 730 Maple Avenue. One of the persons involved was reported to have displayed a firearm. That person, identified as 48-year-old Alexander Garay, fled the scene. Members of the Hartford Police Department Street Crime Unit observed and followed a vehicle leaving the site of disturbance, which Garay was driving. Garay crashed his car at the intersection of Broad Street and West Preston Street.

Officer Gabrielle Arruda and Officer Elvis Martinez approached the car and ordered Garay to show his hands. Garay ignored these commands. A Taser deployment was unsuccessful. When Officer Arruda saw Garay in possession of a firearm, she ordered him to drop the weapon. When he failed to do so, she fired her weapon twice, striking Garay. Hartford police administered medical aid to Garay who was taken to Hartford Hospital. At present, he is listed in critical but stable condition. Police recovered a loaded Taurus Arms 9mm pistol near Garay when he was removed from the car.
