At around 10: 30 a.m. on April 25, 2024, deputies responded to a 911 call from the 2400 block of Fern Street reporting a shooting.

Police said that deputies learned that a man walked up to a 75-year-old woman standing outside of her garage with her sister and shot at her multiple times. HCSO said that the woman was struck by gunfire and the suspect fled on foot west on Fern St. toward Walnut Avenue.

Arriving deputies reportedly spotted a man in the area matching the suspect's description and attempted to stop him at gunpoint. However, the HCSO says the suspect refused commands and fled to a home across the street from where the original shooting occurred.

After additional deputies responded to the home, the HCSO says the suspect exited and walked toward deputies while pointing a firearm in their direction. They say the suspect refused commands and a deputy fired one shot at the suspect, allowing deputies to detain him.

The HCSO says both the victim and suspect were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

HCSO confirmed that the suspect in this case has been identified as 32-year-old Kevin Jeffrey Burks of Eureka.

Police said that Burks died two days after the shooting while receiving treatment at a local hospital. An autopsy confirmed that Burk's cause of death was a result of the gunshot wounds.
