"Those delinquents hot-wired a carnival ride the other night." Hulu has revealed an fun trailer for a holiday comedy called Nutcrackers, the newest comedy directed by David Gordon Green. He spent a long time making his Halloween trilogy, but it's good to see him back directing more lively & funny films like he used to (Pineapple Express, Your Highness, Prince Avalanche, Manglehorn). Nutcrackers premiered at TIFF a few months ago and is opening direct-to-streaming on Hulu at the end of November in time for the holiday season. DGG's Nutcrackers follows strait-laced and work obsessed Mike as he is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews. In the most unlikely of places, 4 siblings find a loving shelter in an unexpected turn of circumstances. This endearing dramedy draws inspiration from actual events and deftly crafts a gripping story that unites everyone. Starring Ben Stiller, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, Toby Huss, Homer Janson, Ulysses Janson, Arlo Janson, and Atlas Janson. This looks kooky and funny, with a few amusing laughs, but it's a story we've seen so many times.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for David Gordon Green's film Nutcrackers, direct from YouTube:

Hotshot Chicago real estate developer Michael (Stiller) never had time for family. His sister once said he was incapable of love. But when Michael’s sister and her husband have a terrible accident, their house, farm, and four boys become Michael’s responsibility. He drives out to his sister’s small Ohio town thinking all he needs to do is sign some papers and get back to the city, but it’s not nearly that simple. With the parents gone, the boys are practically feral. Until the family services worker (Linda Cardellini) can find them a home, their only guardian is Uncle Mike. Before he knows it, he is chasing chickens & providing improvised "health" classes. Desperate to free himself from inherited fatherhood, he’s both surprised and thrilled to learn his sister trained her boys in ballet. Can that make them cute enough to foster? Via TIFF.

Nutcrackers is the latest comedy directed by acclaimed American filmmaker David Gordon Green, of the films George Washington, All the Real Girls, Snow Angels, Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter, Prince Avalanche, Joe, Manglehorn, Our Brand Is Crisis, Stronger, and the trilogy Halloween + Halloween Kills + Halloween Ends previously. The screenplay is written by Leland Douglas. It's produced by Rob Paris, Mike Witherill, & Nate Meyer. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival this fall. Hulu will debut DGG's Nutcrackers movie streaming on Hulu starting November 29th, 2024 this fall. Look funny?

Nutcrackers is a 2024 American comedy drama film directed by David Gordon Green, written by Leland Douglas, and starring Ben Stiller.

The film premiered as the opening film of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.[1]

Plot
Michael "Mike" Maxwell is pulled away from his job in Chicago, following the death of his sister Janet and her husband. In rural Ohio, he winds up having to look after his nephews Justice, Junior, Samuel, and Simon Kicklighter, as social worker Gretchen Rice looks for a foster home who will take them.

The Kicklighter Kids live on a farm and are unruly children who are homeschooled and partake in dangerous recreational activities. Mike is supposed to close a realtor deal for a train yard, but his advisor Carol threatens to give the project to the untested Devin, whom Mike clearly despises.

The Kicklighter Kids force Mike to think on his feet, while he in turn slowly grows accustomed to their rural living. He bonds with them about Janet who ran a dance studio in town where they learned ballet. A couple offers to take the two younger Kicklighters, but Mike refuses to separate them.

The kids vie for wealthy socialite Al Wilmington to take them in, so Mike secures an invitation to his mansion for a Christmas party. While there, Justice is revealed to be in a relationship with a girl named Mia, who also went to the dance studio.

While Mike quickly rubs elbows with everyone there, the kids end up destroying a nativity display with a golf cart that sinks in the swimming pool, souring their chances of getting fostered by Al. Mike goes to another prospect he met named Rose, but she turns out to be fostering solely for money and comes onto Mike, forcing him to turn her down.

Carol passes Mike up for Devin, angering him, but continues his search for potential foster homes. Junior, having written a "better" version of The Nutcracker ballet, inspires Mike to produce it for the local theater, not just to get funding, but also to potentially give the kids a greater chance of getting fostered. Justice initially refuses, until Mike convinces Mia to also be part of the performance.

With the performance underway, Gretchen brings up how Mike's search for a foster family has inadvertently made him attached to his nephews, something he refused to acknowledge. When he still insists that what he is doing is a good thing (calling the kids a "pain in the ass"), his words are overheard by the Kicklighters. Just as Carol calls back to inform Mike that he is needed after all, the kids disappear before the performance starts.

Mike informs everyone in attendance that the play has been cancelled, however it is revealed that the kids have moved the performance outside on the street, at their parents' memorial. Everyone delightedly watches the play while standing in the street.

During the performance, Justice stabs Mike with his prop sword as he feigns an injury. He finally comes to the realization that he loves his nephews and congratulates them, promising that he will never leave them. Everyone celebrates in the street.

During the credits, Mike is revealed to have bought Justice an ATV and the two ride off a ramp (based on an earlier comment about the kids wanting to do so). In post-credits audio, the two are revealed to have failed the jump.

"This movie is a lot of things. It's a comedy, it's a drama, it's a horror movie. But for me, it's a reason to dance, you know, I just wanted to start moving, move my body a little bit, and get out to the farm and kick some pig shit."

Written by Leland Douglas and developed by Rough House Pictures, the film is directed by David Gordon Green. Ben Stiller is producing the film through Red Hour Films. Also producing are John Lesher for Red Hour Films and Rivulet Media's Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, and Rough House’s Nate Meyer. Green is shooting the film on 35 mm film.[3]

Ben Stiller was revealed to be leading the cast in December 2023, his first lead film role in six years.[4] In January 2024, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss joined the cast.[5] Four real-life brothers portray Stiller's nephews in the film, with Homer, 12, Ulysses, 10, and 8-year-old twins Arlo and Atlas Janson all making their film debuts.[6] Their mother Karey Williams was a film school classmate of Green's and scenes were filmed at their family farm in Ohio, with all the animals, except for the snake the kids put in the toilet to scare Michael (Stiller), actually theirs. All four are trained ballet dancers.[7]

Principal photography began in Wilmington, Ohio, in late 2023 and wrapped around January 2024 outside Cincinnati.[8]

Release
Nutcrackers premiered as the opening film at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2024. A few days later, Hulu was said to be in final talks to acquire distribution rights to the film in an eight-figure deal for a Christmas release.[9] The film was released on Hulu and on Disney+ internationally on November 29, 2024.[10]

Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 32% of 38 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.9/10.[11] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 54 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[12]

Ben Stiller gets in over his head in Nutcrackers.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for the new Christmas comedy, which marks Stiller's first leading movie role in seven years.

In the film, Stiller, 58, plays Mike, a "strait-laced and work obsessed" man who, per a synopsis, is "suddenly thrust into being a caregiver" for his four "rambunctious" nephews in rural Ohio after they are orphaned.

The nephews are played by real-life brothers Homer, 13, Ulysses, 11, Atlas, 8, and Arlo Janson, 8, in their movie debuts.

Nutcrackers comes from director David Gordon Green, who previously directed the recent Halloween trilogy, 2008's Pineapple Express and 2023's The Exorcist: Believer.

"I wanted to make a movie without viciousness or cynicism or expectation," Green, 49, said in a statement shared with press. "It was a production experience that evolved with the sunrise and sunset of the farm and the ideas and attitudes of our kids. The effort was to capture the heart and joy of making a movie among people that we love. It was a film experience that felt like a family as we laughed and cried and faced the unknown adventure together."

In the trailer (set to a background track of selections from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, of course) Michael is shown getting into a series of misadventures with the kids that seem to eventually bring them all closer together.

"You know, if you love somebody and they love you, that love doesn't go away. It stays with you," Michael says near the end of the trailer.

Nutcrackers was the opening night gala premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The cast also includes Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss.

Stiller spoke with Variety in September about his return to acting after having focused more on directing, telling the outlet, “I never thought I’d take this much time away from acting."

“It wasn’t intentional; it was just how things evolved," said the Severance director and executive producer, who also helmed 2019's limited series Escape at Dannemora. (His last major screen role was in 2017's Brad's Status.)

Nutcrackers is on Hulu Nov. 29.
Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini star in the new holiday film Nutcrackers, which arrives Friday on Hulu.

The movie follows a man, played by Stiller, who returns to rural Ohio to care for his recently orphaned nephews. David Gordon Green directed the film, in which he cast actual real-life brothers to play Stiller’s nephews.

“It was refreshing. It was fun for me as an actor to be able to be in scenes with these kids who were kind of like learning as they went along,” Stiller said. “David created an atmosphere for them to just to do their thing and to be real. And it was a fun process watching that happen.”

Cardellini agreed, saying she was excited about the concept.

“When I read the script and I realized they were going to be real brothers, and that this was a very specific and unusual story that David was going to tell, I was so excited about it,” she said. “The idea of playing this woman who is sort of the voice of reason amongst all this chaos, it just appealed to me. I wanted to be part of the project. I thought it was special.”

Stiller said Green wanted to make a movie that felt timeless.

“He’s just such an independently minded filmmaker who comes from that world,” Stiller said. “I think his goal was to make something that was organic and real and kind of imperfect and emotional and funny and reminded him of movies that he watched growing up.”
LOS ANGELES — Ben Stiller returns to acting in Hulu’s new family holiday film, “Nutcrackers.”

He plays strait-laced and work-obsessed Mike, who is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews.

The film is directed by David Gordon Green, who was inspired by the four sons of his lifelong friend living on a farm. And not only were the Janson brothers an inspiration for the film, but Homer, Ulysses, Atlas and Arlo also starred in “Nutcrackers.”

In an interview with Spectrum News, Ulysses Janson said working with his siblings on the film was amazing.

“Even when you are not in a scene with them, we’d be looking at them like, ‘oh, is he going to get it? Oh, that’s a great improv scene.’ We just loved working together and having fun. Everybody, even the movie people, we were connected. They were like our family,” he said.

Because being the inspiration and working with each other on the film was not enough, the Jenson brothers also opened their home and their fifth-generation farm to film production. “Nutcrackers” was filmed on their family farm and home, and the animals seen in the movie belong to them.

“I was just so surprised that all our animals, our house, got to be in the film. I was just so happy seeing the cameras film in our house,” said Atlas Janson.

And they may be big Hollywood stars now, but their farm duties have not stopped. Homer Janson told Spectrum News his duties include cleaning the chicken and guinea pig stalls, while his brother’s, Arlo, duties include feeding the animals. In total, the brothers said they have about 90 animals on their farm.

So how was it for the brothers going from an Ohio farm to working with two of Hollywood’s biggest stars?

Linda Cardellini, who also stars in “Nutcrackers,” told Spectrum News it was so much fun seeing Stiller do what he does best on screen with the Jenson brothers, and hopes everyone enjoys the film.

“I love a holiday movie, and I think the great thing about this movie is what family means. Maybe not the family you intend to have, but the family you have around you and how much that love matters. It breaks through everything,” Cardellini told Spectrum News.

Stiller said that “Nutcrackers” reminded him of films he grew up with and for it was an opportunity to make a film that was not cynical but was funny, a little edgy and heartfelt.

“There is so much heart and love in the film. I think right now in our world, it’s great to have a movie, especially over the holidays, that’s there for everybody to enjoy. It’s very organic and made with love,” he told Spectrum News.

“Nutcrackers” is now streaming only on Hulu.
