Why did Jesus come as a baby?

In just over two weeks, we will be celebrating the incarnation. It is the commemoration of the birth of a baby that was fully human and fully God. The biblical story is of a miraculous virginal conception and a very natural growing in the womb and then a normal birth. But why is the virginal conception important? Liberals and non-Christians work hard to eliminate the miraculous from the biblical story by claiming the Bible is simply teaching that a young woman, not necessarily a virgin, will be “with child.” Was this a sign and if so, a sign of what?
