SCRIPT:
Hallo, this is Hans the Dutch guy with Much Dutch, and this time we will tackle the hardest letter in the Dutch language, which is the G.

Yes, it is important to get this letter right, we use it so often, it seems like it is in every other word.

So, in this lesson, we will do a couple of exercises, try a couple of basic words and make it a little bit more difficult as we go along.

Pause it when you want, go back or come back later, but keep practicing, you will get it.

Now, if you can only do the G in a softer manner, like gggg, the sounds we use to mimic an angry cat, gggggg, then that is fine too.

Alright, let us begin with just clearing our throat and trying to ‘feel’ that G. Go ahead, clear your throat like there is something stuck in it.

Now, do that and put an A right after it.

here you go, you made your first Dutch word with a harsh G, it means Go.

Now, shorten that clearing-your-throat sound:

Make it even shorter

Now like we Dutchies say the word: Ga

Did you get it? The trick is now to not overpronounce the g, but have it at the same time audible and there. Ga. Ik ga naar huis. I am going home. Ik ga naar huis.

Let’s try the color YELLOW in Dutch, which is:

Geel. Geel.

If you need to do the clearing your throat technique, go ahead.

Geel. Geel. Try to make that G sound short.

Now, let’s try a word where the letter G is not in the beginning, like the number EIGHT, which is: Acht

Acht. Yes, the CH in this word is also pronounced as a G.

Acht. Acht. Acht.

Remember, don’t overpronounce the G.

Acht.

Let’s stick with numbers and go from eight to eighty, since that will have TWO harsh G’s in it.
Eighty is TACHTIG in Dutch.

So, both G’s are again short. But I will draw them out do you can listen to them:

TACH-TIG TACHTIG.

Try it.

Tachtig.

Let’s try one with a g at the beginning and one at the end, one of our most famous words:

Gezellig.

Ge-zel-lig.

Gezellig.

Are you getting the hang of it? If you need to ‘feel’ the g again, just clear your throat again.

Aight, from here on we will go through 25 words, names and places with the g in it. I will leave enough pause in between for you to try, or you can pause the video of course.
