In a dramatic escalation of Syria’s long-running civil war, armed opposition forces announced on Thursday they have captured the capital, Damascus, and toppled President Bashar al-Assad. Opposition leaders claimed that al-Assad fled the city during their rapid offensive, although his current location remains unknown.Abu Mohammed al-Julani, the commander of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), one of the leading opposition factions, stated that state institutions would temporarily remain under the supervision of al-Assad’s outgoing prime minister. Al-Julani added that a formal transfer of power would occur in the coming days. The fall of Damascus represents the culmination of a coordinated blitz by opposition forces, who seized several major cities in the span of a few days.
