Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) is married to Wallace Webb, the Secretary of State for Defence. Unbeknownst to Wallace she is a Black Dove, a spy who has been giving information to an organization of mercenaries. At a Christmas party her handler, Reed, informs her that her lover, Jason Davies, has been murdered along with two others. Jason was a civil servant and Helen believes his death is unconnected to her though Reed is not so sure.
Reed calls in Sam (Ben Whishaw), who has been absent for seven years, to protect Helen and investigate Jason's murder. Sam discovers that shortly before his death Jason was calling Kai-Ming, the daughter of the late Chinese ambassador to the UK, whose death may have been more complicated than originally thought.
2 "A Little Black Dove" Alex Gabassi Joe Barton December 5, 2024
In 2014, Helen, going by the name Daisy, is recruited by the Black Doves. On her first job she has a one night stand with Wallace but returns when she realizes she left her deceased mother's lighter in her room.
In the present Helen learns that Jason was killed by a man named Elmore Fitch. He attacks her in her home seeking information about Kai-Ming and a mysterious video.
Meanwhile Sam is approached by his former boss, Lenny Lines, who threatens to kill his ex and his daughter unless he finishes a job he abandoned 7 years ago.
3 "The Coming Night" Alex Gabassi Joe Barton December 5, 2024
In 2014 Sam begins working as a trigger man. In 2017 he is assigned to assassinate the Newman brothers but fails to complete the job when he discovers one of them, Hector, is a child. Hector sends assassins after Sam, destroying his life and forcing him to flee. In the present Sam teams up with unlikely allies to kill Newman and rescue Kai-Ming.
Helen discovers that her friend Yarrick might be involved with Jason's murder. She has Sam steal his phone but the result ends in Yarrick being killed and his captors threatening to come after Helen.
Wallace learns through private Chinese backchannels that the ambassador to China may have been killed by the U.S. with support from Britain.
4 "Go Bang Time" Lisa Gunning Joe Barton December 5, 2024
Sam is able to save Kai-Ming who he leaves in the care of Williams and Elinor. They realize they are being watched.
Helen learns Jason may have had another partner. Reed convinces her to infiltrate the American embassy to make CIA agent Cole Atwood money to betray his country. Cole reveals he did not kill Kai-Ming's father but was instead using her to access her drug connection, Trent Clark, who is part of an international crime family. When he asks for his family to be released Helen realizes that she was set up.
Wallace learns that Yarrick is dead and struggles with what that means.
5 "The Cost of It All" Lisa Gunning Joe Barton December 5, 2024
The Clarks kidnap Eleanor and Kai-Ming. With the wounded Williams, Sam, Helen and Cole flee to Michael's apartment. Reed tells Sam to kill Alex Clark.
Dani tells Wallace that Helen is having an affair, which leads him to tell Helen he's always loved her. Dani later reveals to Helen that she is another Black Dove who is training to be Helen's replacement with Wallace.
A suspicious Helen realizes that the video recording everyone is looking for might be at the jewellery shop where Jason bought her Christmas present. She locates the recording and discovers that Trent murdered the Chinese ambassador and the Prime Minister was involved in covering up the crime.
6 "In the Bleak Midwinter" Lisa Gunning Joe Barton December 5, 2024
Helen takes the recording of the murder to Alex Clark in exchange for freeing Sam, Eleanor and Kai-Ming. Helen tries to kill Alex but discovers that she didn't order the hit on Jason and that it was Trent, trying to cover his tracks. To save Helen, Sam kills Alex and Trent though he is warned by an anonymous voice that this has been seen.
Helen gives the recording of the murder to the CIA who use it to clear themselves to China. It is implied that Wallace, who truly knows nothing of the Prime Minister's involvement, will be his replacement.
Reed welcomes Helen back to the fold and informs her that Jason was actually a spy for MI 5, sent to investigate Helen. Though she confessed to him she was a Black Dove his final report cleared her of any wrong doing.
Sam tries to reunite with Michael but is offered a job working with Newman which he accepts. Helen invites him around for Christmas and he finally meets her family though he warns her that people like them don't get happy endings.

As we know from decades of fictional representations, spying requires a deep level of duplicity. As a result, those who engage in the profession find it challenging to sustain relationships with others. Yet, human beings with any level of emotional intelligence require companionship, even if it’s to their determinant. In Netflix‘s “Black Doves,” a British spy thriller created by Joe Barton, the audience meets Helen Webb (an outstanding Keira Knightley), the wife of the U.K.’s Defense Secretary and a mother to two young children whose life seems picturesque. However, there is much more to Helen than what meets the eye. For the past decade, she has worked for the Black Doves, a secret spy organization that sells the British government’s secrets to the highest bidder. Helen has worked tirelessly to maintain her operation, but an extramarital affair thrusts her into a tense and intricate web of conspiracies and cover-ups involving multiple governments and organizations. A twisted thriller of a series, “Black Doves” is a fun, poignant and dizzying journey centering on friendship and connection.

“Black Doves” begins in London in the days leading up to Christmas. Helen is at home wrangling her twins for her husband Wallace’s (Andrew Buchan) annual office holiday party. Everything initially feels joyful and merry at the celebration until a gray-haired woman approaches the couple. The audience learns this woman is Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire, of “Happy Valley” among many other credits), the Black Doves’ formidable spymaster. In the hall outside of the festive affair, Mrs. Reed informs Helen that her lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), has been killed. Though the anguish is present on Helen’s face, she quickly masks it, assuring Mrs. Reed that Jason knew nothing about her line of work. Of course, this information isn’t just swept under the rug. Helen becomes a woman obsessed, determined to find out who killed Jason and why. With her top spy on the verge of going rouge, Mrs. Reed beckons Sam (Ben Whishaw), an assassin and old friend of Helen’s, back to London after a long hiatus and orders him to keep Helen and the organization safe.
Popular on Variety
Tonally, “Black Doves” separates itself from most spy thrillers. With a snowy London, Christmas lights and holiday music as a backdrop, the show has swirls of comedy woven throughout the high-voltage action. In addition to these moments of levity, the series remains compelling because it offers the audience a window into the past. Episode 2, “A Little Black Dove,” opens in 2014. It unpacks a bit about Helen’s true identity, how she was taken under Mrs. Reed’s wing and how Wallace became her mark. Viewers also learn why Sam parted ways with the Black Doves to become an assassin, and how his friendship with Helen was solidified.
In Episode 3, “The Coming Night,” there’s a flashback to 2017. In a stunningly moving scene, Sam leads his shaken and shattered partner, Michael (Omari Douglas), to safety amid an unexpected and bloody shootout at their apartment. Forced to reveal his actual profession to Michael as bullets swirl around the screen, Sam’s tenderness and love for his beau are vividly clear as a trembling Michael clings to Sam’s back for protection. This sequence addresses the psychological toll of these high-risk professions while illustrating why the work is so intoxicating to people like Helen and Sam.
While the performances and pacing of the series are top-tier, the complex web at the center of “Black Doves” gets convoluted by the season finale, “In the Bleak of Midwinter.” A visual diagram would have helped keep the massive tangle of clues, significant figures and organizations straight. Things become so jumbled that audiences will undoubtedly spend a lot of time backtracking and piecing things together before the connections click into place.
Still, amid the mishaps in the mystery, the close-knit bond between Helen and Sam keeps the narrative on track. The pair have vastly different specialties, but trust, and a years-long bond allows them to act as anchors for one another. Sam and Helen rarely showcase vulnerability, but they can always connect with each other through just a glance or a suggestion.
Despite its overly intricate narrative turns, “Black Dove” is engaging and exciting. There are guns, explosions and kidnappings, but at the story’s core is Helen’s desire to be seen for who she is instead of the mask she has so carefully cultivated. While several revelations in the series are obvious, others will stun viewers to their core. These plot points will undoubtedly crack open the narrative for an equally intense second season (Netflix has already renewed the show for Season 2) with increasingly higher stakes. After all, not all loose ends can be tied into a neat bow.
“Black Doves” premieres on Netflix Dec. 5.

Keira Knightley's character, Helen Webb, is seeking revenge in Netflix's Black Doves.
Created by Joe Barton, the thriller series, set at Christmastime, follows Helen (Knightley), who works for the Black Doves — a shadowy corporate organization of international spies led by Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire), who gather information and sell it to the highest bidder.
Helen is married to a prominent British politician, Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), on the path to becoming the country's next prime minister. Unbeknownst to Wallace, their decade-long marriage is purely for Helen's secret-mining gain.
At the beginning of Black Doves, which premiered on Dec. 5, viewers watch as Helen's life begins to unravel when her lover — a low-ranking civil servant working in the Department of Justice named Jason Davies (Andrew Koji) — is killed. Mrs. Reed enlists assassin Sam (Ben Whishaw) and one of Helen's oldest friends to help solve the murder and tie up any loose ends.
Helen is hellbent on finding Jason's killer and taking her revenge however she sees fit, but Knightley says the "heart of the whole series" is Helen's dynamic with Sam.
"There was a deliciousness in showing that kind of friendship in the midst of murder and mayhem," she told Extra in November 2024.
Here's everything to know about how Black Doves ends, including the identity of Jason's killer.
How did Black Doves season 1 end?

At the end of Black Doves season 1, Helen learns that Trent Clark (Angus Cooper), son of London crime boss Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman), was responsible for the hit on Jason (who was secretly an M15 agent investigating Helen).
Trent ordered the hit to cover up accidentally killing his girlfriend's father, Chinese Ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung). This all comes to light in one of the final scenes where Sam, Helen and the infamous Clark family come face-to-face in an abandoned building.
Helen is irate and prepared to kill Trent on the spot, but in a turn of events, Sam kills Alex, his wife and Trent — all in a matter of seconds.
“He does it because he loves [Helen] and because he owes her and because he’s trying to protect her from the burden of killing that kid,” Barton told Tudum of the show's dramatic ending.
Who killed Jason in Black Doves?

Trent hired assassin Elmore Fitch (Paapa Essiedu) to kill Jason.
This was after he learned that Jason, along with jewelry shop worker Maggie (Hannah Khalique-Brown) and tabloid journalist Phillip (Thomas Coombes), had video footage of him killing Chinese Ambassador Chen.
Desperate not to get caught, Trent had Fitch eliminate all three people.
While speaking to Tudum, Barton shared that Trent wasn't always who they had in mind as Chen's killer. “There was a different reveal about who killed the Chinese ambassador that we filmed and didn't end up using," he shared.
In alternative versions of the script, Agent Perryman (Adam Best), the Irish MI5 agent, was responsible.
What happens to Sam in Black Doves?

Sam has much to consider at the end of Black Doves season 1. After killing three members of the Clark family, Sam understands that he has a target on his back. He can run or join forces with Hector Newman (Luther Ford), a member of another crime family and someone Sam spared when he was just a little boy.
It's unclear what Sam's decision is, but he comes to terms with the fact that it's too dangerous to be with the love of his life, Michael (Omari Douglas).
"The consequence [of his and Helen's job] is that it takes a little bit of their happiness or freedom away," Barton told Tudum.
Will there be a Black Doves season 2?
Sarah Lancashire as Reed in Netflix's series 'Black Doves' (2024).

Yes, Black Doves has been renewed for a second season. The announcement was made at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2024, per Tudum.
Barton would like to watch Helen "get pulled deeper into the world of spies having been so close to leaving," he told the outlet. He also imagines the dangers for Helen and her family will ratchet up with Wallace as prime minister.
“Just seeing the tension of that, seeing Sam back in London ... I would like to see more Eleanor and Williams, Kai-Ming, all those people," Barton added. "I’d like to start to throw them up against one another again, and maybe make things more dangerous and challenging for them."
As for whether season 2 will be set during Christmastime again, viewers will have to wait and see.
"It’s all about when it would be released. It doesn’t need to be constrained by the Christmas holiday," the creator told Variety.
Barton continued, "There’s a part of me that’d be like, 'Yeah, let’s always do it at Christmas!' But also it slightly sent everyone crazy to be stuck in a permanent Christmas state for six or seven months. Then in the edit, I mean, we were listening to “Good King Wenceslas” in July. And I don’t know if you want to put people through that again."
Netflix’s Christmas thriller Black Doves will debut worldwide on the streamer in a little over a month and in preparation, the series’ official trailer has been unveiled alongside an all-new poster. Starring Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice), Ben Whishaw (Paddington), and Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley), Black Doves has already been renewed for a second season even before its arrival. It was created by Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project), who also executive produced and wrote the script.
It’s without a doubt that fans will witness action like never before in Black Doves, as teased in the trailer, which sees Knightley as a brutal spy on a vengeful path. Similarly, Whishaw and Lancashire are at the top of their game, promising viewers remarkable performances that will be forever etched in their minds. The Black Doves' trailer also features new music from award-winning British singer Raye, who has recorded a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)." This song will be featured throughout the first season.
In addition to the lead trio stars, the stellar cast list of Black Doves includes Andrew Buchan (Carnival Row), Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once), Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Luther Ford (The Crown), Andrew Koji (Warrior), Kathryn Hunter (Andor), Sam Troughton (Chernobyl), Ella Lily Hyland (Silent Roar), Adam Silver (The Diplomat) Ken Nwosu (Look the Other Way and Run), Gabrielle Creevy (Three Women), Omari Douglas (Rye Lane) and Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London).
What Is ‘Black Doves’ About?
Black Doves, set against the backdrop of London at Christmas, is described as “a sharp, action-filled, and heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice.” The upcoming series is teased as such:
“Black Doves follows Helen Webb (Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves. When her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Whishaw) to keep her safe. Together, Helen and Sam set off on a mission to investigate who killed Jason and why, leading them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis.”
Executive producers attached to the Netflix series are Knightley, Jane Featherstone (Chernobyl), and Chris Fry (Kaos) for Sister and Joe Barton for Noisy Bear. Directors are Alex Gabassi (The Crown) and Lisa Gunning (The Power), while it is produced by Harry Munday.
Black Doves will be released globally on Netflix on December 5. Stay tuned to Collider for future information, and check out the trailer above.
