USS Missouri a Pearl Harbor

Although most remember Missouri as the symbolic end of World War II, she was a highly decorated battleship that earned eight battle stars during her service to the nation three during World War II and five during the Korean War.
Located on Ford Island and in line with the Arizona Memorial along battleship row, the Battleship Missouri (USS Missouri (BB-63)) towers over its dock some 216 feet high. It is accessible only by shuttle from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center or on our tour vehicles. The island is a military installation, so the public is unable to drive onto it without special passes.
When you arrive at the massive naval vessel the entrance walkway is lined with American flags and a stoic statue of Admiral Chester Nimitz greets visitors. The sheer size of the ship becomes apparent as you climb the gangway. The Arizona Memorial can be seen to the left off the front bow, giving visitors an idea of the size of the USS Arizona resting beneath the surface. Once on board the massive array of gun barrels that tower over the deck is just the beginning of a glimpse into what it was like to be at war in the 1940s
The nine 16-inch guns are the Mighty Mo's trademark feature. Each gun barrel is 68 feet long, weighs an incredible 134 tons, and can fire 2,700-pound projectile 23 nautical miles in 90 seconds with pinpoint accuracy. All four Iowa class battleships were reactivated in the 1980s, with Missouri recommissioning in May 1986. Her next six years were busy ones, including, among other activities, a cruise around the World and a combat role in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. She decommissioned for the last time in March 1992. The USS Missouri was finally retired in 1992 and turned from a warship into a museum just like the one in the movie. Today, it stays docked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
