It is unsurprising that in Charles Dickens' time there were those who felt that poverty, and the accompanying human maladies, did not concern them. In every age, that is not an uncommon attitude.
For Dickens, who grew up impoverished, himself, such thinking was anathema to his ideals of Christian compassion. One of his goals with the publishing of A Christmas Carol was to return Britain, and all his readers, to virtuous generosity.
