Syrian rebels claim to have seized the southern city of Daraa, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. This marks the fourth city lost by Assad's regime in a week. Reports suggest the Syrian army requested safe passage to withdraw from the city. Social media videos show rebel fighters celebrating in Daraa's streets and toppling the statue of President Bashar al-Assad's father, former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. The rebels are led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, whose leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has vowed to overthrow Assad in recent interviews with Western media. Rebels also claim advances near Homs, a key city linking Damascus and the Syrian coast. State media reports joint Syrian-Russian airstrikes targeting rebel strongholds. In response to the situation, the Indian government has asked its citizens to evacuate. About 90 Indian nationals are in Syria, including 14 working with various UN organisations.
