Just more than a week after the rebels began their lightning offensive, tens of thousands of civilians are evacuating Syria's third-largest city, Homs, as reports indicate that the rebels are drawing closer.

President Bashar al Assad suffered a serious setback when the rebels took control of northern Hama on Thursday, following his loss of Aleppo the previous week.

Residents of Homs were informed that "your time has come" by Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, the commander of the Islamist militant organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Last week, rebel groups launched the largest onslaught against Syria's government in decades.
