I spent five days living with the nomadic reindeer herders of Russia’s Arctic, 110 kilometres away from any civilization. 🦌The Komi, Khanty, and Nenets people of the Siberian arctic are the guardians of reindeer herding that is the last of its kind, and they live in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous district. In fact, there are more deer here than people! During my time there, I got to learn about the lifestyle, traditions, and culture of these resilient people. I got to see how they survive in the harsh, cold conditions of Russia’s Far North in the Arctic tundra, and the vital role that the reindeer plays in their lives. The deer provide them with everything — food, shelter, and clothing. Fewer places on earth are home to a more challenging environment, an environment where temperatures can plummet to -50 C. Such a difficult environment unites the people physically through a diligent work ethic, but they are also unified by their vibrant culture. In a place that can be so cold, there are people with the warmest hearts. Here is their story ❤️
