“You have few friends, Cromwell. They don’t know how to deal with you,” Damian Lewis’ King Henry VIII tells Mark Rylance’s Thomas Crowell as the trailer for PBS Masterpiece and BBC drama series Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light Begins.

Acting as the final chapter in the TV period drama adaptations of Hilary Mantel’s novels, The Mirror and the Light stars Lewis, Rylance, Kate Phillips, Lilit Lesser and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in returning roles and welcomes Harriet Walter, Timothy Spall and Harry Melling to the king’s court.

A launch date of Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 9/8c has been confirmed for PBS, with the launching in less than two weeks on Sunday, November 10 in a 9pm slot in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. New episodes will launch weekly.

As the trailer continues, we hear the ever-conspiratorial Crowell saying, “When negotiation and compromise fail, and your only course is to destroy your enemy, then before they wake in the morning have the axe in your hand,” as Henry cuts through his words with warnings about his own daughter and complaints about his confidante. Rylance is seen encountering Henry’s new wife, Jane Seymour (Phillips), his daughter Lady Mary (Lesser), Rafe Sadler (Brodie-Sangster), Gregory Cromwell (Charlie Rowe), Thomas Wriostheley (Melling), Dorothea (Hannah Khalique-Brown) and Sir Geoffrey Pole (Pip Carter), with flashbacks of Cardinal Wolsey (Jonathan Pryce).

Production
In March 2022, Mark Rylance confirmed that a second series was in development with scripts being worked on for six episodes and Peter Kosminsky set to return as director.[3] Hilary Mantel was acting as consultant on the script adaptation at the time of her death in September 2022. Kominsky, who worked closely with Mantel on the first series and had received installments of the original text as Mantel was writing the third installment of her historical trilogy, released in 2020, said that the series would continue as a "memorial" to the author.[4] Peter Straughan had again adapted the book for the series, as he had in season one, with Playground and Company Pictures producing once more.[5] In November 2023, it was reported that broadcaster Masterpiece PBS and the BBC were set to begin production on the series.[6] It is produced by Lisa Osborne and executive produced by Colin Callender and Noëlette Buckley for Playground, Kosminsky, Lucy Richer for the BBC, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.[7] On 3 April 2024, the BBC reported that filming had completed and released new pictures and additional casting information.[8] Dr Owen Emmerson was one of the consultants on the show.[9]

Casting
As well as Mark Rylance returning as Thomas Cromwell, Damian Lewis also returns as King Henry VIII and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey. Kate Phillips also reprises her role as Henry VIII's third wife, Jane Seymour, with Lilit Lesser as Princess Mary.[10] The following month it was reported that Timothy Spall, Harriet Walter and Harry Melling had been added to the cast,[11] as well as Will Tudor, Will Keen and Viola Prettejohn.[12] The casting of the courtiers was more diverse for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.[13]

The casting of Egyptian-British Amir El-Masry as Thomas Wyatt was criticized by Wyatt's descendant, journalist Petronella Wyatt.[14][15]

Filming
Filming got underway in late 2023.[16] Filming was reported at Berkeley Castle in February 2024.[17] The following month, filming took place at Wells Cathedral using it as the Palace of Whitehall, where Henry VIII married his third wife, Jane Seymour. Montacute House in South Somerset was used as Greenwich Palace, the site of Anne Boleyn's arrest. They also filmed at Forde Abbey, and Great Chalfield Manor, near Melksham, Wiltshire, was used for Austin Friars, the home of Thomas Cromwell. Gloucester Cathedral and Horton Court near Chipping Sodbury were also used.[18][19]

Broadcast
The series premiered in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 10 November 2024[20] and was shown on BBC iPlayer as part of the original Wolf Hall television series. The series will air weekly on PBS Masterpiece starting March 23, 2025.[21]

The BBC has released the first trailer for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light and announced that the series will launch on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Sunday 10 November at 9pm.

Reuniting the creative team from the BAFTA and Golden Globe winning first series, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is directed by seven-time BAFTA award winner Peter Kosminsky, adapted for television by Academy award nominee Peter Straughan and produced by Colin Callender’s Playground and Company Pictures.

The trailer shows Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) as he navigates the court of King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis), encountering Henry’s new wife, Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips), his daughter Lady Mary (Lilit Lesser), Rafe Sadler (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Gregory Cromwell (Charlie Rowe), Thomas Wriostheley (Harry Melling), Dorothea (Hannah Khalique-Brown) and Sir Geoffrey Pole (Pip Carter), with flashbacks of Cardinal Wolsey (Jonathan Pryce).

The series also features Timothy Spall as the Duke of Norfolk, Harriet Walter as Lady Margaret Pole, Alex Jennings as Stephen Gardiner, Tom Mothersdale as Richard Riche, Karim Kadjar as Eustache Chapuys, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Bess Oughtred, Ellie de Lange as Jenneke and Lydia Leonard as Jane Rochford.

May, 1536. Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second wife, and five of her coterie are dead. As the axe drops, Thomas Cromwell emerges from the bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, and no private army. Navigating the moral complexities that accompany the exercise of power in this brutal and bloody time, Cromwell is caught between his desire to do what is right and his instinct to survive. But in the wake of Henry VIII having executed his queen, no one is safe. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze?

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light (6×60’) is a Playground and Company Pictures co-production for the BBC and MASTERPIECE. The series will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights. The series is making its long-awaited return after concluding of the previous installment in May 2015. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is set to premiere in the US on Sunday, March 23, 2025, on the PBS Prime Video Channel.

The official trailer for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light dropped on October 30, 2024, on the MASTERPIECE PBS YouTube Channel. The series is based on the best-selling trilogy by the late Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will be an adaptation of the final novel in Mantel’s trilogy, The Mirror and Light. The story explores significant moments from the reign of King Henry VIII, played by Damian Lewis, but is told from the perspective of his advisor, Thomas Cromwell, played by Mark Rylance. The upcoming installment is directed by Peter Kosminsky and has been adapted for television by Peter Straughan.

The cast of Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light includes Rylance and Lewis, reprising their roles as leads. The series also comprises Jonathan Pryce in flashbacks of Cardinal Wolsey, Kate Phillips as Henry VIII’s third wife, Jane Seymour, and Lilit Lesser as Princess Mary, the daughter of Henry and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. The series also features Harry Melling, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Timothy Spall, Alex Jennings, and Charlie Rowe.

The Second Installment Will See Thomas Cromwell Navigate Complex Waters

BBC and MASTERPIECE PBS released first-look images for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light back in April 2024. The series, which has been years in the making, will explore the final years of Thomas Cromwell’s life as he navigates how to deal with the Tudor court after the execution of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn.

The upcoming installment will focus on how Thomas Cromwell has to rely on his wits to navigate between the complexities of being caught between his principles of doing what is right as opposed to his desire to survive. The official logline ends on a chilling not and sets the tone for the whole series:

“But in the wake of Henry VIII having executed his queen, no one is safe.”

The series will be released in the UK on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 9 p.m. New episodes will be dropped weekly. The series will have a delayed release in the US, premiering on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 9/8c on Masterpiece on PBS.

Masterpiece has revealed the trailer for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, the second season of the PBS drama, in addition to announcing the official release date.

Wolf Hall Season 2 stars Mary Rylance, Damian Lewis, Kate Phillips, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Jonathan Pryce, Timothy Spall, Harriet Walter, and more. The second season of the PBS limited series is billed as Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, and it’s been nine years since Wolf Hall first debuted (the series premiered on April 5, 2015). Now, fans will finally get to see what happens next, and with much of the original cast.

Here’s everything there is to know about the second season.

When does Wolf Hall Season 2 premiere?
Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will come out on Sunday, March 23, 2025. It will air at 9/8c on PBS.

Is there a trailer for Wolf Hall Season 2?
Yes, and Rylance and Lewis are seen reprising their roles as Thomas Cromwell and King Henry VIII in the trailer, above.

“You have few friends, Cromwell,” Lewis’ Henry says in the beginning of the video. “They don’t know how to deal with you.” He’s facing familial turmoil as well. “My own daughter defies me,” Henry says of his daughter, Mary (played by Lilit Lesser).

“When negotiation and compromise fail, and your only course is to destroy your enemy,” Rylance’s Cromwell states. Later, he ominously threatens, “Before they wake in the morning, have the axe in your hand.”

Who is in the Wolf Hall Season 2 cast?
The photos from Season 2, seen in the gallery below, show Rylance as Thomas Cromwell, Lewis as King Henry VIII, Phillips as Jane Seymour, Lesser as Princess Mary, Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey, Walter as Lady Margaret Pole, Harry Melling as Thomas Wriothesley, Brodie-Sangster as Rafe Sadler, Spall as the Duke of Norfolk, Alex Jennings as Stephen Gardiner, and Charlie Rowe as Gregory Cromwell.

What is Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light about?
Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is based on the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s multi-award-winning trilogy. The season traces the final four years of Cromwell’s life, completing his journey from a self-made man to the most feared, influential figure of his time. Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and a fixer, a diplomat and a father, a man who both defied and defined his age.

The logline for Season 2 gives a captivating look at the intrigue to come: “May, 1536. Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second wife, is dead. As the axe drops, Thomas Cromwell emerges from the bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. But in the wake of Henry VIII having executed his queen, no one is safe.”

“Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future,” the description continues. “All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze?”
