SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 "Shadow Destroys Sonic" Trailer (NEW 2024)
"Project Shadow is far beyond anything we've ever encountered." Keanu as a bad guy! Paramount Pictures has revealed an official trailer for the next Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sequel, which will be landing in theaters in December later this year. Once again directed by Jeff Fowler, this hybrid CGI-animated live-action sequel follows Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) previously. They're knocking these out every 2 years, which is crazy to see it still going remembering the whole weird teeth fiasco with the first movie. New adventure. New rival. All your old friends. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance to defeat him. The full cast includes James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Krysten Ritter, with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Just like the other two movies, it looks like a blast! Have fun.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3[b] is an upcoming action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series published by Sega. The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), it is directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on a story by Casey and Miller. Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Idris Elba reprise their roles, with Krysten Ritter and Keanu Reeves joining the cast. In the film, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles ally with Dr. Robotnik to defeat a new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog.
Plans for a third Sonic the Hedgehog film were announced in February 2022 during ViacomCBS's investor event before the release of the second film. Due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming for animated characters began in July 2023 in Surrey, England, while filming with physical actors began in November of that year in London, with production concluding by March 2024. The film draws inspiration from the video games Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005). Reeves was cast due to the parallels between his performance in the John Wick films and Fowler's vision for Shadow, while many elements of Shadow's character in the games adapted for the screen in a "fan faithful" rendition.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on December 20, 2024.
Premise
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles face a powerful and mysterious new adversary, Shadow the Hedgehog. The trio forms an unlikely alliance with Dr. Robotnik in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.[5]
Cast

Voice cast
Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog: An anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds.[6]
Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Miles "Tails" Prower: An anthropomorphic yellow-orange fox who can fly with his twin-tails.[6]
Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna: A hot-headed and serious anthropomorphic red echidna warrior with super strength.[6]
Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog: An anthropomorphic red-striped black hedgehog created from a secret government program called Project Shadow.[7] He can teleport and has extreme strength.[8] He has lived through tragedy and seeks revenge.[9] Fowler said once they first met, he realized Reeves "very clearly had gone and done his homework", and that he desired to create a "fan-faithful" rendition of the character.[10] Furthermore, Fowler acknowledged the elements of firearms and Shadow's motorcycle in his eponymous 2005 video game, and said that they were "very respectful about what fans expect to see and what they love about the character", and that he and his team were "very aware of the times and the right way to handle that kind of imagery in a family film", feeling they ended in a great place concerning the subject.[11]
Live-action cast
Jim Carrey as:
Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a mad scientist and Sonic's arch-nemesis whom he often refers to as "Eggman".[6]
Gerald Robotnik, Ivo's grandfather who created Shadow the Hedgehog.[11][12]
James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, the adoptive father of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and the sheriff of Green Hills, Montana.[6]
Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Tom's wife, the adoptive mother of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and the local veterinarian of Green Hills.[6]
Krysten Ritter as Director Rockwell[13]
Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Maddie's sister.[14]
Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Ivo Robotnik's assistant.[6]
Tom Butler as Commander Walters, the former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who is the leader of the military organization Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.).[6]
Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, a dim-witted deputy sheriff of Green Hills[15]
Shemar Moore as Randall Handel, Rachel's husband who is an agent for G.U.N.[14]
Alyla Browne as Maria,[16] a girl who Shadow befriends during his time in a lab.[17]
Additionally, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, James Wolk, and Jorma Taccone were cast in undisclosed roles.[6]
Production
Development
In March 2020, James Marsden confirmed that he had signed on for multiple sequels to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020).[18] In February 2022, Sega Sammy Group and Paramount Pictures had been developing a third film after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). It was formally announced during ViacomCBS's investor event.[19] Jeff Fowler returned as director, and Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno returned as producers.[20] Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Fowler, Tommy Gormley, and Tim Miller served as executive producers.[21] Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington returned to write the screenplay, with the former two also being credited for the story.[21] Paul Greenberg and Oren Uziel received off-screen additional literary material credit.[22] In addition, a spin-off television series for Paramount+, Knuckles, was developed simultaneously with the film.[19]
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 draws inspiration from the video games Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005).[23][24] Among the elements from Sonic Adventure 2 incorporated were the fairy-like creatures the Chao. In this film they are part of a Chao Gardens-themed restaurant in Tokyo, where Team Sonic and Shadow face off for the first time. Fowler felt utilizing the characters in a popular attraction was "very believable", and could be used as a plot device, such as when Team Sonic needed to have a moment to regroup and have a conversation about what was going on.[11]
In April 2022, Jim Carrey—who portrays Dr. Robotnik in the films—announced that he was considering retiring from acting.[25] With his possible retirement, Moritz and Ascher confirmed that his role as Robotnik would not be recast in any sequels if he followed through with his retirement plans. However, they remained hopeful that they could develop scripts good enough for him to continue the role.[26] Carrey conceded, requiring that "the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see" if he were to continue.[27]
Filming and casting
Prior to his casting as the voice of Shadow, Keanu Reeves was a popular fancast for the role after the character's cameo in the preceding film.[28][29]
Second-unit filming began in late July 2023 for animated characters only without physical actors (due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike) in Farnham, Surrey, England.[30] Principal photography was originally scheduled to begin on August 31, 2023, in London, England,[31][32] but was delayed to September.[33] Production with physical actors started on November 29, 2023, and was announced with a teaser image of Shadow the Hedgehog's stand-in statue used in filming.[34] Brandon Trost returns as cinematographer.[13] Luke Freeborn was production designer.[13]
In February 2024, Carrey was confirmed to be reprising his role,[20] along with Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Lee Majdoub, and Tom Butler.[6] Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone were cast in undisclosed roles;[6] Taccone was previously hired as an episode director for the Knuckles series.[35] Fowler said that asking Carrey to play the dual role of Ivo's grandfather Gerald was "such a big ask", and meant Carrey had to spend three hours in a makeup chair being physically prepared to play Gerald each time.[11] To write the role for Carrey, Fowler said they initially focused on parallels between his two characters, "not just with bald heads and giant mustaches, but also in their behavior and their attitude"; they then decided they needed to "create the right sort of conflict" for the film.[11] On February 16, Browne's role was revealed as Maria.[16] Schwartz began recording for the film by the week after.[36]
Marsden said that filming had been completed by March 14, 2024,[37] while Fowler officially revealed that the film had wrapped production on March 29.[38] On April 15, 2024, it was reported that Keanu Reeves had joined the cast as the voice of Shadow.[7] Fowler said there was an "obvious corollary" between Reeves's performance in the John Wick series and the "vibe we're trying to channel" for Shadow, and thus these films served as a "perfect, albeit unconventional, 'audition'" for the character.[39] Fowler said that Reeves "would just give us so many different versions of line readings and just want to keep going" during voice recording and said he put more into his performance than "just sort of showing up and reading the script into a microphone", both understanding their vision for the film and realizing his interpretation of Shadow;[10] Reeves was prepared with questions to give himself insight about what the team was trying to achieve.[11] Fowler felt that the world did not become "edgy" with Shadow's character, but the tone the character brought was "a little bit more exciting, a little bit more dangerous".[11] Having worked as a cutscene animator on Shadow's eponymous 2005 game, Fowler felt honored to adapt the character for the screen.[40]
Post-production
As a cost-cutting measure, the producers had an in-house animation team at Paramount work on both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the Knuckles series.[41] Al LeVine serves as film editor.[13] According to Ascher, the team "made an investment in the Sonic assets and [...] built them in-house," then distributed them to the several different vendors, which he noted was comparatively different from previous installments where "usually the vendor controls the assets that they rig." Owning the assets also allowed for their in-house team to work exclusively on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles, and helped the production "keep costs down and move faster."[41] Fowler emphasized the need for visual continuity between the projects and cited good communication as being key to achieving this.[41]
Music
Tom Holkenborg, who composed the score for the first two Sonic films, returned to score Sonic the Hedgehog 3[42] and had finished work by July 2024.[43] In December 2023, Crush 40 vocalist Johnny Gioeli said there had been talks of including "Live & Learn", the theme song from Sonic Adventure 2.[44] In February 2024, Gioeli confirmed "Live & Learn" would be included in the film.[45] Jelly Roll released a single for the film, titled "Run It", on November 21, 2024.[46]
Release
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States by Paramount Pictures on December 20, 2024, taking over the original release date of The Smurfs Movie (2025).[47] Paramount will hold a fan event on December 19 for early screenings at theaters in premium formats.[48] It will release in the United Kingdom a day later on December 21.[49] Tickets went on sale on November 25, 2024.[50][48]
Marketing
In April 2024 at CinemaCon, Paramount showcased first-look footage of the film, which featured a heavier Robotnik bemoaning his current state before his assistant Agent Stone informs that "they found him", and Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fighting a silent Shadow.[51] In July, a popcorn bucket and action figures produced by Jakks Pacific were leaked online.[52] On August 25, the first official tease of Keanu Reeves's involvement as Shadow was posted to the film's TikTok account, which referenced the actor's mention in the first film, captioned "foreSHADOWing".[53] Beginning at that time, images of the film's characters were projected on buildings in locations globally in promotion of the film's first trailer,[54] which released on August 27 alongside a teaser poster.[55] Reeves's role was considered the most prominent feature in the trailer.[8][56][57] IGN observed that "Keanu Reeves is very much in Keanu Reeves mode here",[5] and Vulture likened the actor's moody and vengeful portrayal of Shadow to a John Wick performance.[58] Both Ash Parrish of The Verge and Paul Tassi of Forbes agreed that Reeves's voice was satisfactory, and Parrish also noted Maria's reveal, anticipating how the film would adapt her fate.[17][8]
On the opening weekend of Paramount's Transformers One, posters of Shadow were raffled to the first 300 attendees at select theaters, with Reeves signing a limited quantity of them.[59] In commemoration of Halloween, a 10-second clip from the film of Shadow saying "boo" was posted on social media.[60] On November 4, a promotional still image of Shadow was released by Fandango.[61] On November 18, a new poster was released, featuring the main team, the Robotniks, and Shadow, who looms above the cast at the top and also rides his Dark Rider motorcycle at the bottom.[62] Several press outlets were also sent a Sega Genesis cartridge containing promotional posters and voice lines from the characters, as well as a minigame through which the date for the film's second trailer could be unlocked by inputting a cheat code from the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994); ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑.[63] The trailer was released on November 25. Commentary focused on Shadow's use of a gun in one scene, considering the prominence of firearms in Shadow's self-titled game and Sega's subsequent disownment,[64][65][66] as well as Tails being mistaken for the Pokémon character Pikachu.[64][67] The phrases "HE HAS A GUN" and "HE PISSED ON THE MOON" began trending on social media following the trailer's release, with the latter being a reference to the popular web series SnapCube's Real-Time Fandub.[66]
By October, the Jakks Pacific toy merchandise was released.[68] The shoe company Reebok produced a tie-in line of sneakers in promotion for the film,[69] and McDonald's will sell Happy Meal toys of the film's characters.[70] AMC Theaters produced a novelty popcorn bucket of Sonic's head and a collectible combo of a cup, drink topper, and a mask.[71] In preparation for the movie, Sonic Team developed the video game Shadow Generations as a soft tie-in, with Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka stating that he wanted to "spotlight Shadow as a character" alongside the movie.[72] The title was released in October 2024, and additional downloadable content based on the film is planned for release on December 12. The "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack" DLC will include an additional level set in Tokyo, as it appears in the film, along with a cosmetic skin for Shadow based on his movie appearance. Reeves reprises his voice role for the downloadable content.[73][74]
Future
In September 2024, producer Toby Ascher stated intent for additional installments in the franchise following the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.[75]

First introduced in the video game Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001, Shadow is a creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Possessing extraordinary speed, as well as Chaos Control, a power that allows him to manipulate space and time, he’s initially depicted as an antagonist to Sonic, though in the video games from Sega on which the film franchise is based, he eventually becomes an ally.

Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Keanu Reeves' moody, broken, and wildly violent Shadow has made his debut in the new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
On Tuesday, the hybrid live-action/animated blockbuster unveiled several secrets in its new preview, which teased Reeves' debut as the nefarious Shadow as well as returning series actor Jim Carrey in a dual role as both Eggman and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
In the new clip (below), gaming icons Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) band together to target a "high-level security breach" after Shadow (Reeves) breaks free from confinement to wreak havoc on the world.
Sonic is told that "Shadow's story began a lot like" the blue-haired hedgehog. But where Sonic "found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss," leading to his violent streak.
The trio ultimately turns to Carrey's solitary Eggman — now out of shape and with wildly long facial hair, more so than usual — for help in shutting down Shadow's reign of terror, and they team up (after an Eggman makeover, of course) to take the new threat down .
"If I can't rule the world, I might as well save it," Eggman says in the preview, before meeting his grandfather toward the end of the new footage.

Tomb Raider's Lara Croft named most iconic video game character of all time over Mario, Sonic, Pikachu
The third film in the Sonic film series follows the global box office success of the first two films, which collectively made roughly $725 million worldwide. Drawing inspiration from the Sega video game series of the same name, the movies follow the titular character as he battles Eggman, an evil scientist, with help from Tails, a fox, and Knuckles, an echidna.
Upon making his debut as Sonic in the first 2020 film, Schwartz told Entertainment Weekly he was thrilled to take on the legendary part.

“It is an insane honor, an incredible honor,” the Parks and Recreation alum said at the time. "I was playing these games as a kid, so the idea that maybe my voice will be the one that brings in a new generation to the Sonic franchise…it’s incredible. I feel very, very lucky."
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — also starring James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, and Krysten Ritter — hits theaters on Dec. 20 via Paramount. Watch Reeves' Shadow wreak havoc in the new trailer above.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on the way, and there are already exciting updates about the blue speedster's latest adventure. The Sonic franchise has been one of the most famous in gaming history, with the eponymous blue hedgehog rivaling characters like Mario in terms of popularity. Despite a few early hiccups such as the "Ugly Sonic" debacle, Paramount has created a successful cinematic universe, becoming both critically well-received and commercially successful.
Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 2020 to positive reviews before becoming the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America. The success led to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was released in 2022. The sequel finds Sonic teaming up with Tails, to stop Dr. Robotnik and his new sidekick, Knuckles. The sequel found slightly improved critical and fan reception, and speculation began about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 right away. With so much more world to explore, the latest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie updates promise more fun is on the way.

A Second Trailer Is Dropped & A New Character Teased
Sonic runs through a giant golden ring on the poster for 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog
With mere weeks to go until the threequel arrives in theaters, the latest news comes in the form of a second trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Opening with Sonic, Tail, and Knuckles spending some time in Japan, the trailer quickly shifts into high gear as the gang is attacked by two generations of Robotniks as well as their new ally, Shadow. The good guys quickly call in some reinforcements, and the battle will span across the globe. Several action sequences are teased, including one in which the moon is sliced by a gigantic laser.
In addition to the trailer, Regal cinemas has released images of the special merch created for Sonic 3. This includes several items that would be easy to predict, like a Sonic popcorn bucket and cup, and popcorn bucket toppers of the main characters - but also includes a line of Funko Pops, which features a character who has yet to make an appearance in the films: Cream the Rabbit (alongside her Chao friend Cheese). While it's possible that this character (who first appeared in 2022's Sonic Advance 2) is only a part of the Funko line, her appearance in the Regal merch suggests that she will be making an appearance in the movie. However, whether she has a cameo or a major role has yet to be revealed.

Jim Carrey & Keanu Reeves Lead A Star-Studded Cast
The cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has taken shape, and a lot of the franchise's established players are returning. As with the first two installments, Ben Schwartz will return to voice the titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog. Alongside him, rounding out the iconic trio will be Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Miles "Tails" Prower and Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna. Jim Carrey is officially returning as Dr. Robotnik despite his high-profile "retirement" from acting.
Alongside Carrey's return, Sonic 3 added a slew of new cast members to its ensemble, including Krysten Ritter as Director Rothwell and Cristo Fernández in an undisclosed role. James Wolk, Jorma Taccone, and Sofia Pernas will also appear in unspecified parts. With the news that Cream the Rabbit (and her Chao friend Cheese) may be showing up in the movie, at least one of these actors may well be voicing Cream (likely Sofia Pernas). After years of speculation, Shadow has finally been cast with John Wick star Keanu Reeves stepping into the classic Sonic role, while Alyla Browne plays Marie, Robotnik's cousin

Shadow Returns In The Threequel
A composite image of Shadow with his arms crossed in front of a determined Sonic from Sonic the HedgehogCustom Image By SR Image Editor
The end of Sonic 2 introduced the game's concept of Super Sonic, which is Sonic powered by the Chaos Emeralds, something that could be further explored in the third film. Also, the film ended with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles being together as a trio, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promising to feature an adventure with all three characters together from the start.
The mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced one of the more famous game characters: Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow will be the main antagonist in the threequel, and his powers will prove to be too much for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to take on alone. Instead, the trio will need to turn to an unlikely ally as they recruit Dr. Robotnik to their cause of bringing down Shadow. In addition, it's possible that Cream the Rabbit will play a part in this installment of the franchise, although whether that is as a major role or a minor cameo has yet to be determined.

Shadow looking suspiciously over his shoulder in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
With a few months to go before the film premieres, Paramount revealed a full-length trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The trailer opens with a recap of Sonic and his newfound family in Tails and Knuckles. This is then juxtaposed with the hard life that Shadow has lived, and he is seen breaking free from his bonds to wreak havoc on the world. After failing to bring him down in a head-to-head fight, Sonic and friends must turn to Dr. Robotnik in order to stop Shadow's wrath.
Following the earlier trailer, a new full-length look at Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was dropped in November 2024. The trailer begins with Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails enjoying Japan, with the latter being compared to Detective Pikachu. Suddenly, they are attacked by two Robotniks and their dark ally, Shadow. A series of explosive action sequences ensue, and it's clear that Sonic and pals will need all the help they can get to save the day.
