“Everyone wants to know how the world ended. This is the story of how it began,” says the narrator in the trailer for “Homestead,” an inspirational survivalist thriller out Dec. 20 from Angel Studios.

As the story starts, newscasters announce “America’s just been attacked!” After a nuclear bomb is detonated in Los Angeles, the nation devolves into unprecedented chaos, according to the logline.

Ex-Green Beret Jeff Eriksson, played by “Longmire” actor Bailey Chase, and his family escape to The Homestead, an eccentric prepper’s fortress nestled in the mountains, the logline continues. As violent threats and apocalyptic conditions creep toward their borders, the residents of The Homestead are left to wonder: How long can a group of people resist both the dangers of human nature and the bloodshed at their doorstep?

He had a major role playing Sean Cahill in Suits for several seasons (2014–2019) and played Malcolm Beck on Yellowstone (2019). More recently he has appeared in the second season of Tulsa King (2024).

Early life and education
McDonough was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on February 13, 1966, the son of Catherine (née Bushe) and Frank McDonough, motel owners who emigrated from Ireland, with his mother coming from County Tipperary and his father from County Galway.[1][2] McDonough grew up in Barnstable, Massachusetts and was raised Catholic.[3] His childhood nickname was "Headster", which McDonough says originated in his brothers' teasing him about the size of his head.[4] He graduated from Barnstable High School, and attended Syracuse University, where he was initiated and became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1988. He had obtained several college scholarships to play baseball, but decided to go to Syracuse, as he thought it had the best theater department.[5] McDonough furthered his classical theatre training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Career

McDonough in 2009
In 1991, McDonough won the Best Actor Dramalogue for "Away Alone". McDonough has made many television and film appearances since then, including Band of Brothers, Boomtown, Star Trek: First Contact, Minority Report and The Hitcher. McDonough played Dave Williams on the fifth season of Desperate Housewives.[6] He also starred in the lead role on 2004 medical drama Medical Investigation for its one full season.

In 1996, McDonough voiced Bruce Banner in the animated television series The Incredible Hulk which ran for two seasons. He later reprised the role in the 2005 video game The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

McDonough was set to star in the ABC dramedy Scoundrels,[7] but was fired for refusing to act in sex scenes, citing his family and Catholic faith as basis for his decision.[8]

McDonough portrays Jesus in "The Truth & Life Dramatized Audio New Testament Bible," a dramatized audio New Testament which uses the Catholic edition of the revised standard version of the Bible.

In 2011, McDonough appeared as Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger. McDonough also voiced the character in the 2011 video game Captain America: Super Soldier. He reprised his role four times since then: in the 2013 short film, Agent Carter; in the first episode of the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2014); in an episode of the Agent Carter television series (2015); and as an alternate version in an episode of the What If...? television series (2021).

In 2012, McDonough had a recurring role in the third season of FX's Justified as Robert Quarles, a sadistic carpetbagging mobster from Detroit.[9] He was later cast as Police Chief Parker in Frank Darabont's TNT pilot Mob City.[10]

During the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on NBC, McDonough was featured in a high-profile and frequently aired Poolside commercial for the Cadillac ELR hybrid electric car.[11]

In 2015, McDonough was cast as DC Comics villain Damien Darhk on the fourth season of Arrow.[12]

In 2021, he was cast as President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the tenth season of American Horror Story, titled Double Feature. He is a main cast member for the second part of the season. The same year, he also portrayed the character Dr. William Birkin, the lead villain of the popular video game Resident Evil 2, in a live-action film adaptation of the first two Resident Evil games, entitled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.[13] He also played a small role as a side villain Anders in The 100.

In 2022, McDonough was a guest artist and narrator for the 2022 annual Tabernacle Choir Christmas Program.[14]

Throughout his career McDonough, has enjoyed recognition for his various character roles in both film and television, as well as for his voice work in animation and video games. As a result of these accolades, he is especially considered one of the best "bad guy character actors" in the industry today.[15]

Personal life
McDonough is a devout Catholic.[16] In 2003, McDonough married Ruvé Robertson, a South African model whom he met in the United Kingdom while filming Band of Brothers.[17] They have five children.[18][19][20][21]

He has stated that he refuses to perform sex scenes and kiss female co-stars because of his faith and respect for his wife. He said he was fired from the TV series Scoundrels for his refusal to perform sex scenes.[16]

McDonough is a Republican, and revealed his political beliefs during his eulogy at Buck Compton's funeral.[citation needed]

“We are eternally grateful to our theatrical partners who helped champion our studio and enabled us to bring films that amplify light into movie theaters,” said SVP and distribution head Brandon Purdie. “There is no better place than CinemaCon to celebrate and give credit to our exhibition partners.”

Sudan documentary implores world to remember how a hopeful revolution became a forgotten war

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — In the early days of Sudan's 2019 revolution, Shajane Suliman brought sandwiches, coffee and mint tea to demonstrations in closed-off sections of Khartoum. But as hope made way for despair, she decided more than food was needed to nourish the movement.

Public outcry had sprung up against Sudan's longtime military dictator and his mismanagement of the country's economy. Throughout months of demonstrations, hundreds were killed or injured by security forces suppressing protests.

So Suliman donned a gas mask and headed to the streets carrying posters adorned with lines like, “Souls cannot be killed, let alone ideas.”

A continent away, filmmaker Hind Meddeb was finishing “Paris Stalingrad,” a documentary about the plight of refugees living in encampments near the edge of the French capital. Sudanese refugees encouraged her to go to Khartoum and film their nascent revolution.

Such is the origin story of “Sudan, Remember Us," Meddeb's 75-minute documentary being shown in competition at the Marrakech Film Festival this week after screening at festivals in Venice and Toronto.

Sudan, a predominantly Arab country on the edge of sub-Saharan Africa, descended into civil war in 2023, as fighting erupted between the military and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces that grew out of Darfur’s notorious Janjaweed militia.

Though estimates are difficult to come by, at least 24,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in a conflict that has largely been eclipsed in the world’s attention by wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.

To Suliman, who ended up as one of its protagonists, the documentary’s purpose is similar to what she wrote on a poster five years ago: an effort to motivate a despairing public years after revolution failed to cement civilian rule.

The revolution, she said, felt like “a piece of heaven” despite the violence, full of music, poetry and optimism about Sudan's future.

“Everyone forgot or lost hope,” Suliman said in an interview with The Associated Press. “It’s different for us now than when the revolution started. We were together so it was easy. Now we need to change how we want to continue."

“Sudan, Remember Us” begins with a series of voice messages to Meddeb from April 2023, the month that civil war broke out. Activists describe their feelings of shock and disbelief about how what U.N. officials have called a “forgotten war" has ruined life and made their country unrecognizable.

Mostly, it brings viewers to 2019, the year that Sudan's military ousted President Omar al-Bashir, paving the way for power-sharing and a short-lived transitional government led by generals and civilians.

Largely shot on a handheld camera in a country that has at times blocked the internet, banned foreign news channels and arrested its own journalists, the movie is both a story of collective hope and a feat of reportage.

Meddeb’s observational approach and decision to linger on poems at length differs from gripping streaming-friendly protest documentaries such as Jehane Noujaim’s “The Square” (2013), Evgeny Afineevsky’s “Winter on Fire” (2015) or Kiwi Chow’s “Revolution of Our Times” (2021). She captures a revolution documentary’s requisite images — the chaos and terror as well as solidarity and joy of demonstrators facing off against security forces.

But the movie aims for a different kind of storytelling.

A former France 24 journalist, Meddeb gravitated toward documentary for the breathing room it offered to let stories unfold in an unpredictable way, she said in an interview.

“It’s a very spontaneous film. I was diving into what was happening and and filming what was inspiring me," she said at the Marrakech Film Festival.

What she found and was inspired by was a country described as a “land of literature” and a revolution in which women played a central role.

The protests rendered in the documentary pulsate with drums beating at marches and through the rhythm of poems recited at sit-ins. Meddeb takes the audience from phone camera-filmed street fighting to underground cafes to the Nile River as young people discuss their hopes for Sudan.

“The revolution was a time of beautiful feelings and projects,” one woman says after security forces killed more than 100 people in a June 2019 massacre. “It made you want to take part. A painting, a poem, anything to bring people together.”

Amy Adams' latest film is "Nightbitch."Searchlight Pictures
Amy Adams is best known for films like "Enchanted" (2007) and "Arrival" (2016).

According to critics, her highest-rated movies are "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) and "Her" (2013).

But critics didn't love "Serving Sara" (2002) or "The Wedding Date" (2005).

Amy Adams is a six-time Oscar nominee who has wowed critics with her comedic talent and dramatic range.

Business Insider took a look back at the actor's successful career. Here's how all of Adams' movies rank from worst to best based on critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Adams' lowest-rated film is "Serving Sara" (2002).

serving sara amy adams
Amy Adams in "Serving Sara."Paramount Pictures
Rotten Tomatoes score: 4%

Summary: In "Serving Sara," attorney Joe Tyler (Matthew Perry) works with Sara (Elizabeth Hurley) to get back at her husband (Bruce Campbell) and his new girlfriend Kate (Adams) during their unexpected divorce proceedings.

Although "Serving Sara" is a comedy, reviewers thought the laughs were few and far between.

"Romantic comedy ought to have some romance and laughs, but this extraordinarily flat effort has neither," Hank Sartin wrote for the Chicago Reader.

In "The Wedding Date" (2005), she played Amy.

the wedding date amy adams

Rotten Tomatoes score: 11%

Summary: After Kat's (Debra Messing) sister Amy (Adams) sets a date for her wedding and she realizes that her ex-boyfriend will be the groom's best man, she decides to hire a male escort (Dermot Mulroney) as a wedding date to make her ex jealous.

Most critics wrote "The Wedding Date" off as a forgettable and boring affair.

"This is a charmless, lifeless affair that had me leaving the theater in a mood more appropriate to a funeral than a wedding," James Berardinelli wrote for ReelViews.

The actress voiced Polly in "Underdog" (2007).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 14%

Summary: After a lab accident, a beagle (voiced by Jason Lee) becomes a crime-fighting superhero overnight. With his newfound powers, Underdog defends his home of Capitol City and falls for Polly Purebred (voiced by Adams).

The majority of film critics thought that "Underdog" was cute but too formulaic.

"At just over 80 minutes it feels not so much like a proper film as a piece of extended filler for slow afternoons on Disney's TV channels," James Rocarols wrote for BBC.

She was Kathryn in "Cruel Intentions 2" (2000).

amy adams cruel intentions ii 2

Rotten Tomatoes score: 18%

Summary: In the prequel to "Cruel Intentions" (1999), Kathryn Merteuil (Adams), the daughter of a wealthy socialite, attends an upscale prep school and plays mind games with her new stepbrother Sebastian Valmont (Robin Dunne).

The direct-to-video prequel was originally meant to be a TV series. When the show was canceled, the footage was reconfigured into a film, and critics agreed that the movie suffered because of the format change.

"If he intended to produce a straightforward two-hour original prequel, the writer-director would have made certain that the script was less meandering," Ted Murphy wrote for Baseline Hollywood.

Adams played Abby March in "The Ex" (2007).

the ex
Zach Braff and Amanda Peet starred in "The Ex."The Weinstein Co.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 18%

Summary: In "The Ex," Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) starts a new job to support his family but soon realizes that his boss (Jason Bateman) was his wife's (Amanda Peet) high-school sweetheart.

Adams had a brief appearance as Abby March.

Although some critics admired the leading cast's acting ability, "The Ex" was largely panned for its over-the-top plot.

"Braff has a natural likability, but the screenplay gives him so many stupid, far-fetched and annoying things to do that 'The Ex' loses credibility quickly," Hap Erstein wrote for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In the romantic comedy "Leap Year" (2010), she starred as Anna.
The Homestead teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming post-apocalyptic survival drama, which will be released exclusively in theaters by Angel Studios on December 20, 2024. It stars Bailey Chase (24: Legacy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Neal McDonough (American Horror Story: Double Feature, Band of Brothers), Dawn Olivieri (House of Lies, 1883), and Kearran Giovanni (Designated Survivor).

“Homestead is an intense post-apocalyptic family survival drama. Ex-Green Beret Jeff Eriksson takes a job as head of security at an elaborate prepper compound, ‘The Homestead,’ as the world crumbles,” says the official synopsis for the upcoming movie. “Inside, they face resource wars and ideological conflicts, while outside, chaos reigns. Amid the mayhem, unity and forgotten truths emerge as love grows in unexpected places and the community strives to cultivate the land and fend off impending destruction.”

Check out the Homestead teaser trailer below (watch more trailers):

Who is involved in the Homestead movie and TV show?
Directed by Ben Smallbone (Christmas with The Chosen), the film is based on the Black Autumn book series. It’s a hybrid concept that will see Homestead debut as a film and then transition into a television series. The series is helmed by showrunners Jason Ross and Ben Kasica, while Kasica and Andrea Royer will produce.

“I’m always a fan first when it comes to Angel films,” said Angel Studios co-founder Jeffrey Harmon. “I’m excited to see a hope-filled, family apocalypse story hit the screens — because isn’t God always doing something incredible, even during tough times? Homestead goes on a wild ride through the crash of civilization, only to reveal that family, community, and love are the ultimate survival advantage. I can’t wait to watch the movie and the TV show.”

Angel Studios (Sound of Freedom) is rounding out cast for TV series Homestead, a continuation of the upcoming film of the same name starring Neal McDonough, Bailey Chase and Dawn Olivieri. Based on Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross’ bestselling book series Black Autumn, Homestead the series revolves around a family’s attempts to survive after a world-ending tragedy.

Angel Studios Sets Memorial Day 2025 Release For Bull Riding Drama 'The Last Rodeo' From 'Fried Green Tomatoes' Helmer Jon Avnet & Neal McDonough
Described as The Last of Us meets SEAL Team, Homestead is set against the backdrop of a collapsing civilization and tells the gripping story of two families—the ultra-prepared wealthy family and the military veteran family they’ve hired for security—who clash in a world teetering on the brink of chaos. As tensions rise and the dangers outside grow, evidence mounts that divine intervention may play a role in their survival.

Esten will play Cain Ross, a tall, commanding figure with a rugged presence. Cain is Ian’s brother and is responding to a plea for help from Homestead, but his lone wolf persona clashes with the group’s living life by committee rule.

Wagner will portray Jacq Reynolds, a pregnant therapist in her third trimester who must navigate her new role within the inner circle of Homestead while helping others cope with their trauma. Unprepared for the deep religious feeling that has swept over many of the survivors, Jacq uses her communications skills to get the most deeply stoic / deeply wounded to open up and talk about the horrors they have seen.

Page will play Tom Reynolds, Jacq’s husband and a resilient engineer invited by his college roommate Ian Ross to Homestead. Tom quickly jumps to the middle ranks of Homestead society. Having come from a Texas set ablaze by the conflict, Tom is grateful for the respite, for however brief it may be.

Homestead the series is produced by Angel Studios, 10ton, Skies Fall Entertainment, 2521, and Radiate Pictures. Black Autumn co-author Ross serves as showrunner along with Skies Fall Entertainment founder Ben Kasica.

The series will launch exclusively on the Angel Studios platform.
