Niger Junta Takes Over French Uranium Mine Controlled by French Firm Orano| Firstpost Africa

The spat between junta-led Niger and its former colonial power France is escalating. In the latest, the Niger junta has taken control of a uranium mine which was operated by a French nuclear firm called Orano. The firm says it has lost the operational control of the Somair mine in Niger. The French firm holds a 63% stake in the mine while Niger government owns around 37 % stake. Now, the French firm says decisions made at Somair’s board meetings are no longer being enforced, despite its higher stake. The company is also facing a lot of financial burdens, which is why it suspended production at the mine in October of this year. Following this, Niger's government invited Russian firms to invest in uranium and other natural resource production. Watch for more.
