The Central government plans to start eight significant projects to improve Lakshadweep's tourism connectivity and establish it as a serious competitor to places like the Maldives, about a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the archipelago rekindled interest in it.

The proposed projects include allowing larger vessels to dock at the islands of Kavaratti, Agatti, and Minicoy, according a Union government document CNN-NEWS18 examined.

Other proposals call for building passenger facilitation centers with contemporary amenities at the Androth, Kadmath, and Kalpeni Islands as well as creating open jetties at the latter two locations to handle cruise ships.
